Australia's prime minister said Sunday he was ready to "engage" with billionaire X owner Elon Musk over his criticism of the government's ban on under-16s joining social media. Anthony Albanese hailed the parliament's Thursday passage of landmark legislation requiring social media firms to take "reasonable steps" to prevent young teens from having accounts. The law, which will come into effect after 12 months, gives few details of how it will be enforced, including how sites like Facebook, Instagram and X will verify users' ages. Musk -- who has been named Donald Trump's government efficiency chief in the incoming US administration -- posted on X last month that the law "seems like a backdoor way to control access to the Internet by all Australians". "We will talk to anyone," Albanese said when asked if he would discuss the legislation with Musk. "With regard to Elon Musk, he has an agenda. He's entitled to push that as the owner of X, formerly known as Twitter," Albanese told Australian public broadcaster ABC. When the interviewer mentioned that Musk was also Trump's "right-hand man", the prime minister replied: "We will engage, we will engage." Social media firms that fail to comply with the new law face fines of up to Aus$50 million (US$32.5 million) for "systemic breaches". Musk's platform in October lost a legal bid to avoid a US$417,000 fine levelled by Australia's online watchdog, which has accused X of failing to stamp out harmful posts. The government will decide over the next 12 months how to implement the ban, Albanese said, insisting, however, that it would not require people to provide identification. "The obligation will be on social media companies to do everything they can to make sure that those people under 16 don't have access to social media," the prime minister said. "We know that social media companies have more information about you and I than some of our friends do," he added. "We know that they are able to do that, and the obligation will be on them." Albanese said he was "determined" to implement the legislation. "I've met parents who have had to bury their children as a result of the impact that social media has had as a result of bullying, and we need to do something about it," he said. Several social media giants have promised to work with the government on implementing the law. But they have also criticised the legislation, saying it was "rushed", full of unanswered questions, and did not take into account the views of experts who opposed it. The UN children's charity UNICEF Australia warned this week that the law was no "silver bullet" against online harm and could push kids into "covert and unregulated" spaces online. djw/mp/cwlFeds suspend ACA marketplace access to companies accused of falsely promising ‘cash cards’oxford casino phone number

Residents and relatives say at least nine people were killed during an attack in the Arsi Zone of the Oromia region of Ethiopia on Thursday. Adebebu Workineh is a resident of the Shirka Woreda — or district — in the Arsi Zone, about 250 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa. He told VOA his younger brother, Haile Workineh, was among the nine victims. "The perpetrators called him from his house and later killed him at a nearby river alongside others," Workineh said in Amharic. Among the dead were women and elders, he added. "During the raid I heard [about] the abduction by phone, but I thought they would ask for ransom as usual. They were carrying rifles, and we were afraid to confront them at the time," he said in Amharic. A second resident of Shirka, who would not give his name because of fear for his safety, said most of the victims were Christians. The whereabouts of four other people who were abducted are not known, he told VOA. Social media sites published purported video of nine bodies wrapped in white clothes being buried together. VOA was not able to independently verify the video. The Arsi Zone, a region known for agriculture, is now marred by violence and killing. Residents blamed the Oromo Liberation Army, an outlawed rebel group fighting against the Ethiopian government army, for the killings. Jiregna Gudeta, an adviser to the OLA commander, told VOA he has no detailed information about the incident and denied OLA was involved. Residents say local authorities do little to protect civilians. The ENAT Party, one of the opposition political parties in Ethiopia, has condemned the attack. "Our concern is not the dead ones, we [are] reaching out to the state officers for the people who are about to be the victim of such killing, we immediately call for the state to act," said Getnet Worku, secretary-general of the party. Oromia regional authorities declined to comment on the attack. Peace rallies were held in six zones in the Oromia region in mid-November. Participants of the demonstrations said the aim was to condemn OLA and demand peace in the region. Oromia region spokesperson Hailu Adugna said at the time that the rallies were organized by the local communities and that government officials had no role. But some witnesses told VOA that government officials were urging people to participate in the demonstrations. Jiregna, reacting to the demonstrations in mid-November, said their group is ready to resolve conflicts peacefully. He said it is doubtful whether the people or the government organized the rally for peace. A previous round of peace talks last year between Ethiopia's federal government and the OLA in Tanzania's semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar — has failed to end the violence. The two sides blamed each other for the failure of the talks. The government cited "unrealistic demands" by the armed group while OLA accused the government of failing to address "fundamental problems" facing the country, according to Reuters. This story originated in VOA's Horn of Africa Service.CLEVELAND (AP) — Germain Ifedi became the fourth left tackle to start this season for the Cleveland Browns, lining up Thursday night against the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers. Ifedi moved up the depth chart and into the lineup after starter Dawand Jones broke his left leg last week at New Orleans and had surgery. He'll be responsible for blocking quarterback Jameis Winston's blindside. Jedrick Wills Jr., who had lost his starting job to Jones, figured to start against the Steelers (8-2), but was ruled out Wednesday with a knee injury that has bothered him for weeks. A first-round pick in 2020, Wills recently caused a stir by saying he made a “business decision” to sit out a game on Oct. 27 against Baltimore because of his knee. Coach Kevin Stefanski said Wills used a “poor choice of words.” James Hudson started Cleveland's first two games at left tackle while the Browns (2-8) waited for Wills to recover from knee surgery in December. The first-place Steelers were without outside linebacker/edge rusher Alex Highsmith, who missed his second straight game with an ankle injury. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

It has been more than 30 years since a team held as big a lead as Liverpool after 12 rounds of the Premier League. Not that Arne Slot is getting too excited about an eight-point advantage before even hitting December. “It’s nice to have this position,” the Liverpool manager said Sunday after Mohamed Salah's second-half double inspired a 3-2 come-from-behind win at Southampton, “but we are definitely not getting carried away.” Only Manchester United's class of 1993-94 — under Alex Ferguson — has had a larger lead than Slot's Liverpool at this stage of a Premier League campaign. The title stayed at Old Trafford that season. It's those kind of glory days that Ruben Amorim is trying to recreate after taking charge of United and the Portuguese coach's tenure could hardly have gotten off to a better start. Only 81 seconds had elapsed before United marked Amorim's first game at the helm with a goal from Marcus Rashford at Ipswich. United couldn't hold out and a 1-1 draw against a team destined to be battling against relegation underlined the scale of Amorim's task to turn around the fortunes of a fallen giant in English soccer. “It was really hard for them," Amorim said of United's players. "They were thinking what to do — it was not fluid, which is normal after just two training sessions, but they tried hard. “They have so much space to improve. But after a draw, you never feel the good things.” SALAH TO THE RESCUE Salah moved onto 10 goals for the league campaign, second behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (12), and Liverpool now has 10 victories in 12 league games. It's a start to the season Slot can only have dreamed about after joining from Feyenoord for the tough job of replacing Jurgen Klopp. Helping Liverpool is the alarming form of defending champion Man City, whose stunning third straight league loss — 4-0 at home to Tottenham on Saturday — was a fifth defeat in a row in all competitions. Second-place City heads to Liverpool next weekend and could be 11 points behind the Reds after that match at Anfield. Liverpool was trailing 2-1 at Southampton when Salah equalized in the 65th after running onto a long pass forward from Ryan Gravenberch. The Egypt forward then converted a penalty in the 83rd after a handball by Yukinari Sugawara and nearly had a hat trick at St. Mary’s stadium — only to hit the post in the final minutes. Liverpool’s win owed as much to the defensive inadequacies of last-place Southampton as any excellence from Slot’s visitors. The Reds were gifted the opening goal, though Dominik Szoboszlai’s finish was excellent after he collected a weak clearance from Flynn Downes and curled a shot in off the post. It started after Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy rolled the ball out to a player who was swarmed by Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez at the edge of the area. Southampton fought back, with Adam Armstrong converting a penalty in the 42nd minute after Andy Robertson tripped Tyler Dibling just inside the area and then setting up Mateus Fernandes to stroke home in the 56th. Salah came to Liverpool’s rescue, though, and again there will be question marks about McCarthy, who raced out of his goal to take Gravenberch’s pass only to be beaten to the ball by Salah. Salah was able to run with the ball into an empty net and was celebrating again after converting the match-clinching penalty past McCarthy. “It is a great feeling but it is the beginning of the season,” Szoboszlai said of Liverpool’s big lead. “We just need to continue and not think where the other teams are.” AMORIM'S TWEAKS For his first match with United, Amorim started with a 3-4-3 formation — picking Rashford as the sole striker and Amad Diallo, a winger, as one of the wing backs. Those big calls were quickly vindicated. Off United's first attack, Diallo was sent clear down the right and crossed for Rashford to poke home from close range. Omari Hutchinson equalized in the 43rd minute for Ipswich, which is likely to be battling relegation this season but was more than a match for United. It highlighted the challenge facing Amorim to bring United a first title since 2013. That surely won't happen this season — United is in 12th place, already 15 points behind Liverpool.NEW YORK , Nov. 25, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The global secondary tickets market size is estimated to grow by USD 132.1 billion from 2024-2028, according to Technavio. This approach allows ticket prices to fluctuate based on factors such as holidays, injuries, team records, day of the week, and weather forecasts. By implementing dynamic pricing, these entities can recover revenue that would otherwise go to scalpers or third-party vendors, reducing ticket touting. Dynamic pricing also helps undercut secondary prices, forcing scalpers to lower their own prices and bringing exchange prices closer to face value. Although this strategy decreases buying volume and profit margins in secondary markets, it effectively combats fraudulent activities and overpricing. Notable secondary ticket vendors employing dynamic pricing include Live Nation Entertainment and TiqIQ. The secondary ticket market continues to be a significant trend in the events industry. With the increasing popularity of concerts, sports, and other live events, the demand for secondary tickets has grown. Companies offer various platforms for fans to buy and sell tickets, providing convenience and flexibility. The use of digital platforms and secure payment methods has made the process more efficient and trustworthy. However, concerns around ticket prices and authenticity remain.
