In the aftermath of South Korea's deadliest aviation disaster in decades, officials grapple with the challenge of identifying causal factors in the tragic plane crash that claimed 179 lives. The incident has cast a shadow over the nation already mired in political instability. The crash occurred as a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 descended at Muan International Airport, where it careened off the runway, igniting a fierce inferno. Video evidence suggests potential mechanical failures, but while investigators scour data from flight recorders, a complete understanding may take months. This tragedy exacerbates an existing leadership crisis, following the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo. As the public mourns, concerns escalate about the government's ability to address both the immediate disaster and longstanding safety concerns. Amid backlash, 'ailing' Bushra Bibi to skip Nov 24 'do-or-die' protestFarmers have announced a 'Punjab Bandh' on Monday leading to the expected closure of all shops across the state and disruptions in road and rail services. However, emergency services will continue to operate. There will also be no supply of milk, fruits, and vegetables until the protest ends on Monday evening as several trade organisations lent their support to the bandh. "Farmer union leaders will enforce a chakka jam on roads and rail lines from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Government and private institutions are requested to stay closed. Only emergency vehicles, such as ambulances, marriage vehicles, or anyone in a dire emergency, will be allowed to pass," reports quoted a senior farm leader as saying. The decision to give a call for a 'Punjab bandh' was taken last week by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM). Sarwan Singh Pandher -- who happens to be the coordinator of both forums -- said traders, transporters, employees unions, toll plaza workers, labour, ex-servicemen, Sarpanches and teachers' unions, social and other bodies, and some other sections have lent their support to the bandh. Farmers under the banner of SKM (Non-Political) and KMM have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces. With Jagjit Singh Dallewal's indefinite hunger strike entering its 34th day on Sunday, farmer leaders at Khanauri said they have been following the Gandhian way to continue their protest and it is up to the government to decide whether it wants to use force to evict their senior leader. He further said the farmers wanted to make it clear that whatever situation arises the responsibility will lie with the Centre and the constitutional bodies. Rail movement and road traffic will remain closed on Monday. In support of the farmers' Bandh call, bus services in Punjab will remain suspended on Monday. While the PRTC bus services will be shut for four hours, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the private bus operators have announced their full support, thus declaring the suspension of services across the state from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday. Besides a legal guarantee on the MSP for crops, the farmers are demanding a debt waiver, pension for farmers and farm labourers, no hike in the electricity tariff, withdrawal of police cases and "justice" for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence. Reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013 and compensation to the families of the farmers who died during a previous agitation in 2020-21 are also part of their demands. This bandh, the farmer leader said, will force the Centre to accept the demands of farmers. He slammed the Union government for failing to accept the demands of farmers. Farmers under the banner of SKM (Non-Political) and KMM have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after security forces stopped their march to Delhi. A "jatha" (group) of 101 farmers made three attempts to enter Delhi on foot on December 6, December 8, and again on December 14. Security personnel in Haryana prevented them from proceeding. There will be a complete bandh on December 30, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said. However, emergency services will remain operational. Punjab farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said the call for a 'Punjab bandh' on December 30 is getting good support from various sections. The decision to give a call for a 'Punjab bandh' was taken last week by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. To ensure the success of the bandh, SKM (Non-political) and KMM convened a meeting of transporters, employees, traders and others at the Khanauri protest site last Thursday. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Eric Bieniemy's return to UCLA lasted only one season. The Bruins let go of Bieniemy on Thursday after fielding one of the nation's worst offenses this season. It didn't take head coach DeShaun Foster long to find a replacement. Indiana quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri will become the new Bruins offensive coordinator, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Bruins had not yet announced the decision. Sunseri spent one season at Indiana after following Hoosiers coach Curt Cignetti from James Madison. Cignetti and Sunseri worked together for four seasons, the first three with the Dukes, who made the most successful transition from FCS to FBS in history. Bieniemy was hired as associate head coach and offensive coordinator shortly after Foster was hired as head coach in February. Bieniemy was also on the Bruins staff from 2003-05 as running backs coach. Jason Fletcher, Bieniemy's agent, said in a statement that Bieniemy planned to stay only one season in Westwood and termed it a “mutual parting of the ways.” However, Bieniemy signed a two-year contract at UCLA and did have a retention bonus if he was on staff for the 2025 season. "After interviewing for head coaching jobs last year, he wanted to stay active and busy," Fletcher said. “So, he decided to go help out Deshaun Foster, who is like his little brother, at UCLA as opposed to sitting out a year.” Out of 134 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, UCLA was 117th in total offense (328.8 yards per game), 126th in scoring (18.4 points per game) and had the nation's fifth-worst rushing attack (86.6 yards per game). The Bruins — 5-7 in their first season in the Big Ten after qualifying for a bowl the last three years — were the sixth Power Five team since 2000 that didn't score at least 20 points in their first six games. Players also said early in the season that Bieniemy's scheme was difficult to grasp and that play calls could be too wordy. Bieniemy was a two-time Super Bowl champion offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs but his last two stops have not gone well. He was Washington's offensive coordinator in 2023 but was not retained after Ron Rivera was fired. Bieniemy said in an email to ESPN earlier this year that he was not fired by Washington and that he received NFL offers to coach running backs or be a passing game coordinator. However, when asked during UCLA's spring practice to explain those remarks or what his other job prospects were, he refused to do so. “What I’m going say is this: I’m here coaching at UCLA. All that other stuff, you could go talk to the Commanders. I’ll leave it just like that,” he said. Bieniemy wasn’t retained by new Commanders coach Dan Quinn, who replaced Rivera. Despite his success in Kansas City, Bieniemy hasn’t landed a heading coach job, even though he’s interviewed with more than half of the NFL’s 32 teams. Fletcher said: "The plan was always to return to the NFL in 2025, and he’s looking forward to the opportunities ahead.” Sunseri's immediate priority will be to stem any further losses to the transfer portal. Quarterback Justyn Martin — who was on track to compete for the starting job following the graduation of Ethan Garbers — and running back T.J. Harden have already entered the portal. At Indiana, Sunseri worked closely with Kurtis Rourke, a transfer from Mid-American Conference school Ohio. Rourke went on to have one of the best seasons in Hoosiers history as No. 9 Indiana (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten, No. 9 CFP) broke single-season school records for victories and conference wins and appears set to make its CFP debut in two weeks. Sunseri, like Cignetti, also coached previously at Alabama. Sunseri served as a graduate assistant for the Crimson Tide in 2019 and 2020 after previous stints at Florida State and Tennessee. The 35-year-old Sunseri also spent three seasons with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, winning a Grey Cup title as a rookie in 2013 following his college career at Pittsburgh. AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll and https://apnews.com/hub/college-footballLONDON, Dec. 30, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- StealthCore, a company recognized for developing tools for game modifications, has officially ceased creating scripts for League of Legends. The decision stems from mounting difficulties in circumventing modern anti-cheat systems, particularly Riot Games' Vanguard. The StealthCore team outlined the increasing complexities introduced by current anti-cheat technologies. "Vanguard has fundamentally changed the landscape," a spokesperson stated. "Bypassing these measures now requires intricate modifications, such as adjusting BIOS configurations. Many users lack the technical expertise to handle these steps, and others face hardware limitations, especially on laptops. These challenges have created barriers that significantly impact both developers and users." Vanguard employs sophisticated techniques to prevent unauthorized modifications in gaming environments. Among these are hardware bans enforced through TPM chips, which make circumventing detection increasingly difficult. Even tools designed to evade such restrictions, like spoofers, have a short lifespan and are often rendered ineffective within days of deployment. Additionally, Vanguard's hardware bans, which typically last 120 days, serve as a strong deterrent to repeated infractions. The growing effectiveness of anti-cheat systems underscores the heightened focus on ensuring fair play in online gaming. Developers of modification tools are finding it increasingly difficult to keep pace with the advancements in detection and prevention technologies. As Vanguard continues to secure Windows platforms, some developers have turned their attention to macOS systems, where similar anti-cheat measures are not currently enforced. While this shift provides a potential alternative, its viability is limited. "The number of gamers using macOS for competitive play is minimal," the spokesperson explained. "Few players are likely to invest in a Mac solely for this purpose, making it an impractical solution for most users." Private cheat tools have also seen increased interest. These are typically distributed to a restricted group of users, often capped at 25 participants, to reduce the likelihood of detection. However, their exclusivity and high cost make them inaccessible to the broader gaming community. StealthCore highlighted deceptive practices within this space where public tools are falsely marketed as "private" at elevated prices. "Such claims mislead users," the representative added. "These tools are no safer than public options and often result in quick bans." The cumulative challenges associated with anti-cheat advancements have led to a significant decline in StealthCore's user base, which has reportedly dropped by 95%. In light of these developments, the company has opted to terminate its support for League of Legends scripts entirely. StealthCore's decision mirrors broader trends within the game modification community. As security technologies evolve, the feasibility of creating undetected tools has diminished, signaling a shift toward more secure gaming ecosystems. For players, this change reflects the growing emphasis on integrity and fairness in competitive gaming. The increasing sophistication of anti-cheat systems leaves little room for unauthorized modifications, reinforcing the importance of adhering to established rules. About StealthCore StealthCore has been a longstanding developer of tools for game modifications, recognized for its contributions to enhancing gameplay experiences. The company's decision to discontinue League of Legends scripts underscores its acknowledgment of the challenges posed by evolving security technologies and its alignment with the broader movement toward fair play in gaming. Tune in to ISRO’s live stream to witness this historic event as India attempts its first-ever space docking experiment. New Delhi: India is on the verge of creating a history in space research as ISRO is all set to launch the PSLV-C60 mission to include the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX). This challenging mission is planned for December 30, 2024, with the use of two satellites that will be weighing 220 kg each; Chaser (SDX01) and Target (SDX02). These satellites will try to rendezvous at an orbit of 470 kilometres above the Earth, which will demonstrate India’s capability in performing advanced space manoeuvres. The launch will be done by the successful Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which reveals the technology and versatility of the satellite. This mission is a historic moment for India since the nation has now become the fourth country in the world to achieve space docking after Russia, the United States and China. Apart from the technical aspect, SpaDeX is a strategic plan to further the Indian space mission, the human space flight mission Gaganyaan, future lunar missions and the concept of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), the proposed Indian space station. The mission is expected to enhance the global position of India in the space industry along with the innovation and technical knowledge. Watch Live as PSLV-C60 Embarks on Revolutionary SpaDeX Mission Here SpaDeX: A Jump Towards Future Space Ventures SpaDeX is not just a technological advancement; it is a very important milestone towards several other projects in the offing. The docking system that has been used in the mission conforms to international docking standards, showing how ISRO is willing to embrace compatibility and innovation. These capabilities are required for future missions such as the Chandrayaan-4, which is planned to collect samples from the moon, and for the development of the BAS, which is proposed to be a long-term facility for scientific exploration and habitation. Besides docking, PSLV’s fourth stage, POEM-4, will carry 24 scientific experiments and add to the scientific importance of the mission. These experiments are meant to observe different occurrences in space, making the mission cheap and all-round. It also provides a way forward to other future applications like servicing satellites, formation flying, and construction of large space structures and repositions India as a front runner in space technology. Consistent with Strategy to Optimize Business Portfolio and Enhance Free Cash Flow PITTSBURGH , Dec. 5, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Koppers Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Koppers Holdings Inc. KOP , today announced that the company will discontinue phthalic anhydride production at its facility in Stickney, Illinois , in 2025. The decision, affecting approximately 25 employees, was driven by significant near-term capital spending requirements that could not be economically justified by end-market projections. An ancillary benefit is an improvement in the site's environmental footprint as annual emissions of certain regulated air contaminants are expected to be reduced by 50 to 70 percent. Koppers has targeted mid-2025 for the shutdown and expects to ramp down production of phthalic anhydride over the next six months as the company builds inventory to supply existing contracts through 2025, as necessary. The closure of the phthalic anhydride plant will not impact Stickney's coal tar distillation operations, which manufacture products including creosote, carbon pitch and pavement sealer base. The phthalic anhydride plant at Stickney was constructed to consume naphthalene, a byproduct of the coal tar distillation process, as a feedstock to produce the chemical intermediate used to manufacture plasticizers, polyester resins, and alkyd paints. As availability of coal tar has declined, phthalic anhydride has become less profitable as lower naphthalene production resulted in a need to supplement production with a greater proportion of higher-cost third-party feedstock. This action is expected to result in pre-tax charges to earnings of $51 million to $55 million through the end of 2026. Approximately $28 million constitutes non-cash charges anticipated to be recorded in 2024 and 2025 with approximately $23 million to $27 million over the next two years going toward cash expenditures, primarily for plant cleaning, waste disposal, and demolition costs. Ongoing operational and capital expenditure savings have been incorporated into the company's current 2025 goals of $300 million of adjusted EBITDA and $65 million to $75 million of capital expenditures. Koppers CEO Leroy Ball said , "The decision to close the phthalic anhydride plant demonstrates our ongoing willingness to critically assess our portfolio and pivot from underperforming businesses when it is clear that improvement is not on the horizon. By focusing on our core strengths, we can continue to enhance our competitive position in healthier markets to drive better long-term returns. Ceasing operations at any plant is never easy, however, this will improve the performance, efficiency, and emissions profile at Stickney . I want to thank our dedicated employees who have worked hard over the years to serve our customers with quality products. I am mindful of the impact this decision has on them and am committed to ensuring that they are supported through this transition." BAKU, Azerbaijan – Countries agreed on Sunday, November 24, to an annual finance target of $300 billion to help poorer countries deal with the impacts of climate change, with rich countries leading the payments, according to a hard fought deal clinched at the COP29 conference in Baku. The new goal is intended to replace developed countries’ previous commitment to provide $100 billion per year in climate finance for poorer nations by 2020. That goal was met two years late, in 2022, and expires in 2025. The broader, more domestically focussed smallcaps and midcaps were little changed. “Persistent concerns such as sustained foreign institutional investor outflows, diminishing expectations of U.S. rate cuts in 2025 and a lack of major domestic triggers amid the year-end are weighing on market sentiment,” said Mandar Bhojane, research analyst at Choice Broking. India’s benchmark indexes rose about 1% last week after dropping about 5% in the prior week, their worst fall in 30 months, as the Federal Reserve’s projection of fewer rate cuts in 2025 lowered the appeal of emerging market assets. Asian shares edged lower on Monday as high Treasury yields challenged lofty Wall Street equity valuations while underpinning the U.S. dollar near multi-month peaks. Information technology companies, which earn a significant share of their revenue from the U.S., shed 0.7% on the day, amid sustained foreign outflows due to elevated Treasury yields. Auto shares lost 0.5% ahead of the monthly sales data due later in the week. Among individual stocks, JSW Energy climbed 6.6% after the power producer announced a definitive agreement to acquire renewable power company O2 Power Midco Holdings. Vodafone Idea rose 2.6% after telecom department dispensed with the requirement of submitting bank guarantees for spectrum acquired through auctions. Electric two-wheeler maker Ola Electric Mobility lost 3% following the resignations of two senior executives. Choice Broking’s Bhojane expects the market to remain subdued in the near term as investors await triggers such as monthly auto sales data and the December quarter earnings. NoneIn 2023, East Central University announced the launch of a campaign that would see the construction of a new STEM Center on the ECU campus that would also house the ECU Nursing Program. The groundbreaking for this new state-of-the-art facility was over the summer with representatives from the State of Oklahoma, City of Ada, Valley View Foundation and Chickasaw Nation in attendance. ECU is pleased to announce that this newest addition to the university’s campus will be named in honor of Chickasaw citizen Dan Hays. “We are pleased East Central University is honoring Chickasaw citizen Dan Hays, whose generosity and vision of the future has had a powerful impact on education throughout the Ada area, the Chickasaw Nation and beyond,” said Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby. “It is fitting that ECU’s new STEM center should bear the Hays name as a tribute and testament to his commitment to lifelong learning and education.” Hays, who possessed an allotment of 320 acres of land across what is now Ada, recognized the significance of establishing what was then named East Central State Normal School in the region. Following approval for the normal school by Gov. Charles N. Haskell in 1909, Hays quickly stepped forward to donate 16 acres of his land, his only stipulation being that he be allowed to remain in his home, which was also located on the 16-acre allotment. The chosen acreage, allotted by Hays, allowed for ECU’s first building, Science Hall, to be constructed at the end of Ada’s Main Street. An article featured in the May 6, 1909, edition of the Ada Evening News reported by Col. E.H. Lucas stated, “The acceptance of the proposed site will mean that the normal school would be located in that magnificent location, avenue style, at the end of East Main Street. From this point, the view could not be more excellent. To stand in the center of the business section of Main Street and look at the point proposed for the location on the east side must bring from anyone an involuntary expression of approval, for it is the prettiest site I ever saw.” Construction quickly began and the students of East Central Normal School were blessed to begin their second year of classes in their very own building by the fall semester of 1910, thanks to the generous donation of Dan Hays. In honor of Hays significant contribution and the longstanding relationship that it helped forge between ECU and the Chickasaw Nation, ECU President Wendell Godwin has announced that the university’s newest addition will be named in honor of Hays himself. “We are proud to embrace the Native American legacy on our campus, and this is an excellent way to memorialize the original gift from the Hays family,” said Godwin. “The Chickasaw Nation has been a driving force in the region’s educational successes for decades. East Central University is excited to highlight the native theme and décor that will be illustrated throughout the Dan Hays STEM Center to further demonstrate our appreciation. Our community is excited to watch the construction over the next 18 months.” Among the highlights of this two-floor facility is a simulation center, more than 25 hands-on learning labs and STEM classrooms equipped with the latest technology to benefit both STEM and Nursing students. The construction of this new building and the expansion of the nursing program are expected to generate a 200% increase in nursing graduates from ECU. Historically, 84% of nursing graduates stay in Oklahoma five years after graduation and 75% of students are accepted into medical school. Nursing, Math and Computer Science are some of the university’s largest and fastest-growing degree programs. The average pass rate for the ECU School of Nursing on the registered nurses NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is 97% while the national average is 82%. This expansion will allow ECU to recruit a number of new staff and faculty as well as more than 200 new nursing students to the university and community. The new facility will serve to reaffirm ECU’s commitment to educating students and transforming students’ lives for generations to come.

By Shyamu Maurya December 30, 2024 0 7 Share Facebook Twitter Pinterest WhatsApp Telegram iPhone banned: Now these three iPhone models will not be sold, Apple has banned their sale, what is the reason? Apple has banned the sale of many iPhone models including iPhone 14 in some European countries. They cannot be purchased from anywhere online or offline. iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone SE (3rd generation) have been removed from online stores. This decision of Apple is also being seen in relation to the use of Lightning connector by the European Union. iPhone banned: Apple has decided to ban the sale of iPhone in some countries. The company is going to stop the sale of three iPhone models including iPhone 14 in many countries of Europe. According to the report, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone SE (3rd generation) have been removed from the online stores of many European countries. That is, now they cannot be purchased online. Apple has imposed this ban especially on iPhone and other devices equipped with Lightning port. Offline sales also banned It has also been told that the iPhone models whose sale has been banned by Apple cannot be purchased online as well as offline. This decision of Apple is also being seen in relation to the use of Lightning connector by the European Union. Apple was asked by the EU long ago to install Type C port in its device. Since then Apple worked on it and now all its iPhones are coming with Type C port. The same charging port has been given in Apple’s most advanced iPhone 16. How did Apple accept the EU’s Let us tell you, in 2022, the EU had said that smartphones and some electronic devices sold in 27 member countries should be equipped with USB Type-C ports for charging. The EU’s aim behind doing this was to reduce electronic waste. Initially, Apple refused to do so and also challenged it. However, after a long dispute, Apple finally had to agree to the EU. After this, the company started providing USB Type-C port facility in all devices. It is worth noting that iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone SE (third generation) do not have USB-C ports. Therefore, Apple has decided to ban their sale. Ban on sales in these countries Apple is in the process of clearing its inventory in many countries. The company has stopped selling these iPhones in Austria, Finland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden and other countries. Interestingly, Switzerland is not a member of the EU. But still Apple has banned the sale of three iPhone models in the country. Apart from this, these devices will not be able to be purchased in Northern Ireland as well. iPhone 17 Air in discussion These days there is a lot of discussion about iPhone 17 Air. It is being said that this time the company can replace its Plus model with the Air model. According to the report, this model of Apple will be the thinnest iPhone ever. The state’s top road safety bureaucrat has rejected suggestions that new high-tech cameras that can catch wrongdoers on West Australian roads en masse are revenue-raisers. Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner joined Road Safety Minister David Michael on Monday to announce the rollout of the six mobile cameras from Australia Day. Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner and Road Safety Minister David Michael. The smart cameras, leased for five years at a cost of $22 million, can easily spot motorists using their phones or driving without a seatbelt and will be deployed to deter the behaviours that make up a large reason for so many of the fatalities on WA roads. A camera pointed at just one lane on the Kwinana Freeway near Salter Point last month spotted more than 6300 people using their mobiles while driving, and 5100 not wearing their seatbelts. Had that camera been used to issue fines, it could have netted the Road Trauma Trust account anywhere from $5 million to $10 million, depending on the severity of the offences. The rollout of the new cameras will coincide with a three-month grace period where motorists breaking the law will be issues with a caution instead of a fine. Warner said this demonstrated the cameras were not about revenue-raising, but changing behaviours. “It’s anything but revenue raising, that’s why we’re doing caution notices,” he said. “This is about drivers changing their behaviour. We have a culture problem. We need to address it, and these cameras are the first step in doing that.” Warner said 99 per cent of people wore seatbelts, but 20 per cent of people who died in crashes weren’t wearing seatbelts. “That should tell you something,” he said. The announcement comes as WA records its worst road toll in almost 10 years, with 182 deaths. Michael said in this context now was the time for the technology to become a vital and permanent tool to be used across the state. “The message is clear and simple: these cameras are coming, slow down, buckle up and put your phone away,” he said. Batteries not only power electric cars, but can supply energy to buildings and stabilize power grids, through bidirectional charging. Electric cars boast increasingly powerful batteries that are charged from the energy grid or rooftop solar systems. But when the car isn't in use, its battery can serve as storage for homes and the energy grid via a bidirectional charging process that can reduce power costs. How does it work, and are there drawbacks? What is bidirectional charging? Until recently, power flowed in one direction to electric vehicle (EV) batteries from the charging station. A charged battery could not only power the electric motor, electronics, lights and heating but external devices such as a fridge when camping, a drill on a building site or even another EV. These additional functions are called V2D (vehicle-to-device), and V2L (vehicle-to-load). But using the latest bidirectional chargers, EV batteries can also supply entire buildings with electricity using vehicle-to-home (V2H), or feed electricity into the public grid via vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. They can also simply charge car batteries. However, bidirectional devices are currently only available in select charging station locations. How much electricity can a car battery store? The batteries in EVs are becoming cheaper and more powerful. The battery in the Tesla Model Y, for example, has at least 62 kilowatt hours (kWh), the VW ID.4 has 77 kWh and the Renault small car (R5) has at least 40 kWh. By comparison, the electricity consumption of a two-person household in Germany is around 54 kWh per week. A mid-range electric car could therefore completely cover this electricity requirement with a full battery charge. In addition, the new ID.4 and R5 models are already designed to power buildings and feed electricity into the grid. With a bidirectional charging station, solar power can flow from the roof of a house into the car battery during the day, and back into the building from the car in the evening. This means residents can use cheap solar power both day and night. By linking to the electric car, homeowners can save on installing additional battery storage units for the solar system. In single-family homes, solar battery systems usually have a capacity of 5 to 10 kWh, and cost up to €10,000 ($10,440). Meanwhile, bidirectional charging is "not harmful to the car battery per se," said Robert Kohrs, an expert in smart energy grids at German research body, the Fraunhofer Institute. "If you do it right, controlled charging and discharging can increase battery life by 5 to 10%." How can electric cars stabilize the power grid? Cars are driven on average less than an hour a day in Germany. During the time that e-cars are parked, grid operators could use the batteries to temporarily store electricity and thus compensate for fluctuations in the power grid. This will help use the growing amount of solar and wind power flowing into national grids. In recent years, that has amounted to 70% of power generated in Denmark and just under 50% in Germany — though it's often available when it's not needed. EV batteries can temporarily store the surplus electricity from these renewable energy sources. When demand increases, the electricity can be fed back into the grid. This also relieves the pressure on gas or coal-fired power plants during periods of high consumption, while less battery storage is required to stabilize the electricity grids. Meet you at the charging hub! To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The savings potential for the shared use of car batteries in the EU could reach €22 billion annually, according to a recent study commissioned by the European environmental organization, Transport & Environment. The report said EVs could cover up to 9% of the EU's electricity requirements, and temporarily up to 20%, making them an important pillar of the electricity system. While the affordable and climate-neutral energy supply of the future will be based primarily on solar and wind power, according to a study published in Science magazine, this will require battery storage systems with a capacity of 74 billion kWh worldwide by 2050. By 2050, there could be 1.5 billion EVs worldwide, said the researchers. With batteries averaging 60 kWh per vehicle, this global fleet could store a total of up to 90 billion kWh of electricity. What are the benefits of car batteries for car, home and grid? According to the Fraunhofer study on EV power integration, e-car owners could save between €31 and €780 per year by sharing the battery power with their own home or the power grid. In France, private owners of the new electric Renault R5 were offered 10,000 kilometers (around 6,200 miles) of free driving electricity in return for connecting their car to a bidirectional charging station for an average of 15 hours a day. The offer has been "well received in France, we are getting a lot of interest," said Thomas Raffeiner from Mobility House, a German-Swiss company that markets bidirectional charging — and the low cost of energy for consumers who utilize the flexibility of car batteries . Raffeiner told DW that more such offers are in the works. According to a survey commissioned by energy supplier Eon, 77% of respondents would use bidirectional charging technology to supply their own buildings, while 65% would support electricity grids. Experts recommend that the new generation of private and public charging stations should function bidirectionally wherever possible. The Fraunhofer study estimated that this would increase the initial costs by roughly €100 for small charging stations (up to 22 KW), and by around €250 for a fast charging station. However, these additional costs would be offset by the savings made within a few months of use. With the adoption of Agenda 2030 by the UN and nations worldwide, a new era in global sustainable development has begun. In this context, the role of aviation as a key driver of global connectivity is more crucial than ever, aligning with the Chicago Convention’s objectives to view international flight as a fundamental enabler of global peace and prosperity. In 1996, the United Nations General Assembly declared 7 December to be International Civil Aviation Day. The day has been celebrated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) since 7 December 1994, marking the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. Every five years, coinciding with ICAO anniversaries, the ICAO Council establishes a special theme for the celebration of International Civil Aviation Day. In the years between these anniversaries, the Council selects a single theme to cover the entire four-year period. The Council has decided that the theme for the period leading up to 2023 will be: ‘Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development.’ Aviation is a mode of transportation that enables people to travel quickly between locations. As technology continues to evolve, advancements in aviation must be implemented for the benefit of people worldwide. As a developing country, Myanmar allocates its budget to upgrading airports and aviation facilities, with the private sector also working to enhance aviation services for the public. The government’s aviation services include air traffic control, navigation, and airport services for international flights. As a result, government organizations are striving to provide better services and facilities for both domestic and international flights. In today’s technological era, everyone must enjoy fundamental human rights. No one has the authority to infringe upon the rights of others. People around the world must unite in solidarity, offering support to one another in overcoming challenges, particularly in the transportation sector. Myanmar, for its part, has always refrained from any destructive actions in aviation services and remains ready to assist other countries by providing aviation support for disaster relief. To date, Myanmar and its neighbouring countries continue to cooperate in maintaining aviation services for their people, contributing to the global development of aviation.

Courtney Frazer | (TNS) Bankrate.com Exchanging currency is vital to international travel, whether you’re visiting for leisure or business. Understanding the nuances of currency exchange can help you avoid costly mistakes and make the most of your travel budget. Before you exchange money, you should know how to choose the right place to exchange your money, time your transactions for the best rates and estimate the money exchange fee. Currency exchange involves converting one country’s money into another’s. Because currencies have different values from country to country, exchange rates fluctuate based on factors like political stability, economic performance and global market conditions. Without proper knowledge of currency exchange, travelers risk losing money on unfavorable exchange rates, excessive fees and even fraudulent practices. It’s important to know how currency exchange works and where to do money exchanges so you can get the best deal. Exchanging money abroad often comes with various fees, so it’s important to understand what you might encounter. Flat fees Some exchange providers charge a flat fee per transaction. These can make smaller exchanges expensive relative to the amount you’re converting. Always ask about any flat fees in advance, and consider exchanging larger sums to minimize the impact of this fee. Percentage fees Many currency exchange providers charge a percentage-based fee on the total amount exchanged. This fee structure can become costly if you’re exchanging large amounts of money, so compare percentage-based fees before making any decisions. ATM withdrawal fees If you’re withdrawing money from an ATM abroad, your home bank and the foreign bank may charge withdrawal fees. Some banks refund these fees, while others may partner with international banks to provide fee-free withdrawals. Before traveling, check with your bank to understand what ATM fees you might face and whether they offer any reimbursement options. Foreign transaction fees Foreign transaction fees are often charged when using credit or debit cards abroad. Depending on the card issuer and payment network, these fees can range from 1% to 3% of the transaction amount. Many travel-focused credit cards offer no foreign transaction fees, which can help you save money when making purchases abroad. Check your card’s terms and conditions before you travel to avoid surprises. If your card charges foreign transaction fees, consider limiting its use and opting for other methods, like cash or prepaid travel cards. Not all currency exchange options are equal, especially for travelers. Some places offer better rates and lower money exchange fees, while others provide more convenience. Here’s a breakdown of the most common currency exchange options. Banks and credit unions Banks and credit unions are generally the best money exchange options, offering competitive exchange rates and transparent fees. Many banks provide foreign currency services for their account holders, and some even offer currency at a better rate when you order it in advance. If you have a major bank account, the bank may offer international ATM withdrawals with little to no fees. Banks tend to have the most secure exchange process, so you can avoid the high fees and markups that are common at airport exchange booths. Currency exchange kiosks Currency exchange kiosks, often found at airports and tourist destinations, are convenient but have significant drawbacks. They frequently offer lower exchange rates and higher fees, taking advantage of travelers who need quick cash. If you need to use a currency exchange bureau, only exchange a small amount to cover immediate needs and seek out better rates at a local bank or through an ATM once you reach your destination. Always check the exchange rate and fees before completing any transaction at these kiosks to avoid unnecessary charges. ATMs abroad Using ATMs to withdraw local currency in your destination country is one of the most convenient ways to get cash while traveling. Many banks are part of global ATM networks, allowing you to withdraw money with minimal fees if you use ATMs associated with their partner banks. However, it’s important to check with your bank ahead of time to understand what fees may apply to international withdrawals. When using ATMs abroad, stick to machines from reputable banks and avoid independent ATMs found in tourist-heavy areas or small shops. These often have higher fees and less favorable exchange rates. It’s also a good idea to notify your bank of your travel plans to avoid having your card frozen for suspicious activity. Prepaid travel cards Prepaid travel cards offer an excellent solution for travelers who want to manage currency exchange with ease. These cards allow you to load multiple currencies before you travel and lock in exchange rates to avoid rate fluctuations while abroad. Prepaid travel cards can be used like regular debit or credit cards but with the added benefit of lower foreign transaction fees. They also help limit spending, as you can only use the funds preloaded onto the card. However, be aware of hidden fees such as inactivity, ATM withdrawal or reloading fees. When exchanging currency for travel, it’s easy to fall into traps that result in unnecessary expenses. Here are some common mistakes travelers make and how to avoid them. 1. Exchanging money at airports and hotels While airports and hotels may be convenient places to exchange money, they often have the worst exchange rates and highest fees. Airport kiosks, in particular, are notorious for inflating rates, sometimes marking them up by as much as 10% compared to what you’d find at a local bank or ATM. To avoid these high costs, exchange a small amount of money before your trip to cover immediate expenses like transportation. Once you arrive at your destination, use ATMs or banks for more favorable rates. 2. Using dynamic currency conversion Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) allows you to pay in your home currency when using a credit or debit card abroad. While this may seem convenient, it usually comes with a much worse exchange rate and additional hidden fees. Whenever possible, always opt to pay in the local currency of your destination to avoid unfavorable rates. DCC also gives merchants more control over the exchange rate, meaning they could use a rate that benefits them more than you. When paying with a card abroad, always make sure you’re being charged in the local currency to get the most accurate rate. 3. Timing your exchange poorly Exchange rates fluctuate daily based on global market conditions. If you know you’ll need to exchange a large sum of money, it pays to keep an eye on exchange rates before your trip. Use tools to track exchange rates and exchange your money when the rate is in your favor. For travelers planning ahead, some banks and online services allow you to lock in exchange rates before traveling, helping you avoid losses due to unfavorable fluctuations during your trip. When traveling abroad, currency exchange fees can quickly eat into your budget. You can use certain strategies to help you save, avoid common fees and make the most of your money while exploring new destinations. 1. Plan ahead for international trips Before heading overseas, research your destination’s currency and exchange rate options. Many banks allow you to order foreign currency ahead of time, saving you from the poor exchange rates and high fees at airports or in tourist-heavy areas. If your bank offers international ATM withdrawal with low fees, consider using this option to access local currency while traveling. Financial institutions sometimes offer special travel accounts or debit cards with reduced fees for foreign transactions. Check with your bank to see if they offer international-friendly options that can help you save money while abroad. 2. Credit cards with no foreign transaction fees Credit cards that offer no foreign transaction fees can be a great asset when traveling internationally. Death anniversary of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto observed Tags: army wapda national womenIn October 2021, when Primary Wave first acquired a stake in Bing Crosby ’s estate, the members of the new guard sat down together and came up with two objectives. “One is: we want to make Bing the king of Christmas and holidays, every season, every year,” senior marketing manager Jack LeVine recalls to Billboard of the late pop icon, who delivered the definitive 20th century renditions of “White Christmas” and other seasonal staples. “And two is: just exciting, educating and engaging global and young audiences around Bing and his catalog.” Nearly 7,000 miles away, the person who would turn out to be key to both goals was in the midst of an era-defining career explosion as part of South Korean boy band BTS , which brought renewed global attention to K-pop in 2021 with a breathtaking run of sunny dance singles – most prominently the 10-week Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper “Butter” — dazzling audiences with sleek visuals and snappy group choreography and enjoying the support of an ever-expanding, relentlessly passionate fanbase dubbed ARMY. But while the performer known as V was, to the world, one of seven young men at the helm of the year’s most polished, cutting-edge wave of contemporary pop dominance, the artist who grew up Kim Tae-hyung was, in his personal life, a reverent fan of a much different genre: jazz. And his favorite performer? Bing Crosby. You could call it kismet, then, that three years later, V can now consider his hero a duet partner, their voices coming together over generations and lifetimes on a revamped version of “White Christmas” — fashioned out of an extremely rare recording found in Crosby’s extensive personal archives, voice-isolating technology and redone instrumentals — that dropped Friday (Dec. 6). But the project is actually the result of years of Primary Wave brainstorming, coordinating and consulting with Crosby’s daughter Mary and son Harry on how to not just preserve the iconic star’s legacy, but push it forward in a way that changes with the times. There are many, scattered moments in the story of how the new “White Christmas” came together that could be considered the starting point, from V’s numerous posts about loving Bing over the years to Primary Wave’s discovery of the recording, a necessarily intimate 1950s radio performance that had only been released on limited physical products in the past — and could be perfect for recreating the magic of Crosby and David Bowie’s 1977 era-bridging “Little Drummer Boy” duet, with the help of a new modern star. But it’s the moment that those two worlds came together that proved to be the most fateful: when Primary Wave’s Sarah Nekich, digital and audience engagement, was scrolling X in her free time and came across a vlog posted by V in July 2022 in which he sang Crosby’s “It’s Been a Long, Long Time” in his car. At that point, months had gone by since the estate had considered the duet idea, stalled without a clear choice as to who was fit to join the late legend on the track. But now? “It was just too perfect,” Nekich remembers of seeing V’s video. “He just had a beautiful jazz-like voice that sounds very similar to a young Bing Crosby. It was a no-brainer: These two are meant to be on a song together.” The rest of the team – including Harry and Mary Crosby – were similarly impressed, and Primary Wave quickly reached out to V’s camp at HYBE x Geffen, who “were really receptive,” says Levine. The estate went to work on fleshing out a proper sketch of what the duet would actually sound like with V in the mix, tapping experienced jazz and classic pop producer Gregg Field to oversee the music, while Nekich — having already reposted V’s cover of “It’s Been a Long, Long Time” on Bing’s channels, and getting rocked by a tidal wave of ARMY engagement in response – continued interacting with BTS fans on social media to maintain momentum. “The fact that V was such a huge fan was so heartening to us,” recalls Mary Crosby. “Until he came along, there wasn’t the right person. Because of V, Dad is going to be reaching an entirely different audience.” The pieces were coming together, but making them connect would take more time than anticipated — especially as other projects repeatedly pushed the duet lower and lower on the to-do list. “The challenge with Christmas is no one is thinking about it in January or February,” Levine explains, laughing. In late 2022, however, something lit a fire under the enterprise. “The BTS solo members announced that they were enlisting [in the South Korean military],” the executive continues. “There was a new sense of urgency. We were racing against a deadline that we had no visibility into.” If Field had been able to take his time constructing the song before, he definitely couldn’t anymore. The producer – who’s previously worked with John Williams and Herbie Hancock – assembled the track using all-new instrumental arrangements by Rob Mounsey, recording rhythm section backings in Los Angeles and the orchestra and choir parts in Europe. Doing everything fresh was essential to making the finished product palatable to “2024 ears,” Field says, as was the process of separating Crosby’s vocal from the radio recording through iZotope’s Music Rebalance technology, revitalizing it to sound “like it was recorded yesterday” — sort of the musical equivalent to restoring aged paintings or worn-down buildings. “That’s a perfect analogy,” Field tells Billboard of the process. “It’s getting all of the years of crud away from it and exposing what’s there.” The last piece of the puzzle was V’s contribution, which he recorded remotely just before shipping off in December 2023 for 18 months to complete his mandatory service. His raw talent blew Field away. Says the producer, “The musical decisions [V] made – he understood who he was singing with.” When the mix was finally complete early this year, all Primary Wave had to do was keep the collaboration a secret until finally announcing it in November, to the absolute delight of V’s biggest champions. Nekich reports that Crosby’s accounts have been absolutely flooded with heartfelt messages from ARMY ever since, with the late crooner’s following on X doubling “almost overnight” and his engagements skyrocketing by 300,000% within two weeks of the reveal. Many of their comments, Nekich says, express genuine pride and happiness for V, who shared in a statement at the time of the announcement, “I feel incredibly fortunate and honored to have sung along ... with the voice of someone I consider an idol.” For Mary, the project represents everything that was important to her father in his lifetime. “If you look at what Dad did in terms of technology, bringing voice on tape ... he was always ahead of the game and always incredibly interested in musical experiments,” she reflects. “This collaboration with V is kind of a continuation of that. Many people [from Bing’s era] would’ve not been able to wrap their head around this, but I think Dad would have.” As for whether her father, who died in 1977, would’ve chosen to do the duet with V if he were alive today, Mary says, “Dad would’ve jumped at the chance.” “He tried everything and sang with everybody,” the actress adds. “That sparked him. There are so many popular singers that list Bing Crosby as an influence, but Dad was always 100% ready to be musically influenced by someone else.” With the track finally out in the world after three years of build-up, Primary Wave has officially made good on the goals they set at the beginning of their relationship with Crosby’s estate. But, galvanized by the breathtaking support of ARMY and the realization that, through technology, more doors are open to them than previously imagined, the team is ready to think even bigger. Nekich hopes the duet becomes a “new Christmas classic” — one that’ll serve as the jumping-off point, not the end of, Crosby’s relationship with V. And, she’d “love to see it go to the top of the Billboard charts this Christmas — we’re shooting for the stars.” On that note, Levine is also adding an unofficial third objective to the bulletin board. “Respect to the queen,” he tells Billboard , “But I hope we outperform Mariah [Carey] this year.” Listen to Bing Crosby’s brand-new version of “White Christmas” featuring V of BTS above.

WASHINGTON — Working-class voters helped Republicans make steady election gains this year and expanded a coalition that increasingly includes rank-and-file union members, a political shift spotlighting one of President-elect Donald Trump’s latest Cabinet picks: a GOP congresswoman, who has drawn labor support, to be his labor secretary. Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer narrowly lost her bid for a second term this month, despite strong backing from union members, a key part of the Democratic base but gravitating in the Trump era toward a Republican Party traditionally allied with business interests. “Lori’s strong support from both the Business and Labor communities will ensure that the Labor Department can unite Americans of all backgrounds behind our Agenda for unprecedented National Success – Making America Richer, Wealthier, Stronger and more Prosperous than ever before!” Trump said in a statement announcing his choice Friday night. For decades, labor unions have sided with Democrats and been greeted largely with hostility by Republicans. But with Trump’s populist appeal, his working-class base saw a decent share of union rank-and-file voting for Republicans this year, even as major unions, including the AFL-CIO and the United Auto Workers, endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris in the White House race. Trump sat down with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union leadership and members this year, and when he emerged from that meeting, he boasted that a significant chunk of union voters were backing him. Of a possible Teamsters endorsement, he said, “Stranger things have happened.” The Teamsters ultimately declined to endorse either Trump, the former president, or Harris, the vice president, though leader Sean O’Brien had a prominent speaking slot at the Republican National Convention. Kara Deniz, a Teamsters spokesperson, told the Associated Press that O’Brien met with more than a dozen House Republicans this past week to lobby on behalf of Chavez-DeRemer. “Chavez-DeRemer would be an excellent choice for labor secretary and has his backing,” Deniz said. The work of the Labor Department affects workers’ wages, health and safety, ability to unionize, and employers’ rights to fire employers, among other responsibilities. On Election Day, Trump deepened his support among voters without a college degree after running just slightly ahead of Democrat Joe Biden with noncollege voters in 2020. Trump made modest gains, earning a clear majority of this group, while only about 4 in 10 supported Harris, according to AP VoteCast, a sweeping survey of more than 120,000 voters nationwide. Roughly 18% of voters in this year’s election were from union households, with Harris winning a majority of the group. But Trump’s performance among union members kept him competitive and helped him win key states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Chavez-DeRemer was one of few House Republicans to endorse the “Protecting the Right to Organize” or PRO Act, which would allow more workers to conduct organizing campaigns and add penalties for companies that violate workers’ rights. The measure would weaken “right-to-work” laws that allow employees in more than half the states to avoid participating in or paying dues to unions that represent workers at their places of employment. Trump’s first term saw firmly pro-business policies from his appointees across government, including those on the National Labor Relations Board. Trump, a real estate developer and businessman before winning the presidency, generally has backed policies that would make it harder for workers to unionize. During his recent campaign, Trump criticized union bosses, and at one point suggested that UAW members should not pay their dues. His first administration did expand overtime eligibility rules, but not nearly as much as Democrats wanted, and a Trump-appointed judge has since struck down the Biden administration’s more generous overtime rules. He has stacked his incoming administration with officials who worked on the Heritage Foundation’s “Project 2025” blueprint, which includes a sharp swing away from Biden’s pro-union policies. “Chavez-DeRemer’s record suggests she understands the value of policies that strengthen workers’ rights and economic security,” said Rebecca Dixon, president and CEO of National Employment Law Project, which is backed my many of the country’s major labor unions. “But the Trump administration’s agenda is fundamentally at odds with these principles, threatening to roll back workplace protections, undermine collective bargaining, and prioritize corporate profits over the needs of working people. This is where her true commitment to workers will be tested.” Other union leaders also issued praise, but also sounded a note of caution. “Educators and working families across the nation will be watching ... as she moves through the confirmation process,” the president of the National Education Association, Becky Pringle, said in a statement, “and hope to hear a pledge from her to continue to stand up for workers and students as her record suggests, not blind loyalty to the Project 2025 agenda.” AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler welcomed the choice while taking care to note Trump’s history of opposing polices that support unions. “It remains to be seen what she will be permitted to do as secretary of labor in an administration with a dramatically anti-worker agenda,” Shuler said.Cardano's recent price surge caught many by surprise, leaving investors eager for the next big opportunity in the crypto market. Arbitrum (ARB): Enhancing Ethereum's Scalability with Optimistic Rollups Arbitrum (ARB) is one of the Layer-2 solutions that increase the speed and scale of transactions on Ethereum. Built by Offchain Labs, optimistic rollups are used to process transaction off-chain, thereby increasing efficiency and reducing costs for smart contracts. The ARB token, in turn, is a governance token that allows its holders to vote on network decisions and even participate in the development of this ecosystem. With an initial supply of 10 billion tokens and a maximum yearly inflation rate of 2%, ARB is distributed among investors, DAOs, individual wallets, a DAO Treasury, and the team. This technology tackles the limitations of Ethereum and it is likely to grow as more are adopted in the blockchain community. Litecoin (LTC): Faster Transactions and Enhanced Privacy in Cryptocurrency Litecoin (LTC) was created in 2011 by former Google engineer Charlie Lee. Designed as a faster and more scalable alternative to Bitcoin, it uses the Scrypt hashing algorithm to prevent mining centralization. Litecoin supports faster transactions with a block generation time of 2.5 minutes and has a larger coin supply of 84 million. It distinguishes itself through continuous innovation, notably the MimbleWimble (MWEB) upgrade launched in May 2022 for enhanced privacy and scalability. While it faces competition from Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, Litecoin's focus on lower fees and faster transactions offers a user-friendly payment solution. In the current market cycle, its ongoing improvements and unique features make it an attractive option for everyday transactions. Fetch.ai (FET): Decentralized AI and Machine Learning Network with Growth Potential Fetch.ai is an artificial intelligence lab developing an open, permissionless, decentralized machine learning network founded in 2017 and launched via IEO on Binance in March 2019. It aims to democratize access to AI by making it possible for anyone to connect and access secure datasets using autonomous agents that execute tasks across its global data network. The platform is focused on use cases like optimizing decentralized finance trading services, transportation networks, smart energy grids, and travel systems. According to historical price movements and Bitcoin halving cycles, Fetch.ai's price may hit $1.024293 by 2025 and $1.190916 by 2030, indicating a possible rise. The coin seems attractive in the present market cycle because of its technological innovation and forecasted price rise. AVAX: Eco-Friendly Blockchain with Fast Transactions and Custom Subnets Avalanche (AVAX) is a Layer-1 blockchain known for being eco-friendly, having low fees, and offering rapid transactions. It can process between 4,500 transaction in every single second and has seen an achievement of transaction finality at near a time of two seconds only. Avalanche utilizes a Hybrid Mechanism of Consensus comprising a combination of classical consensus principle together with Nakamoto Principle. It consists of three interoperable chains: X-Chain for assets, C-Chain for smart contracts, and P-Chain for staking and validators. AVAX is a native token used in the context of fees on transactions, staking, and even creation of custom tokens and blockchains. Customers can launch customizable subnets in order to create their very own blockchains. For a participant in the current market cycle, AVAX's technology and features may prove particularly attractive. Conclusion Whereas the short-term promise of ARB, LTC, FET, and AVAX is very poor, the most promising meme coin hero toward financial freedom is Catzilla. The project offers an ROE of up to 700% when its presale began at $0.0002, reaching $0.0016 over 14 stages, with governance options, reward schemes for loyalty, and staking options as well, inviting all supporters to participate in the war against crypto villains. Flacco, a New Jersey native who turns 40 on Jan. 16, has passed for 1,167 yards and nine touchdowns in six games this season, including four starts. He also has thrown five interceptions. The 22-year-old Richardson was selected by Indianapolis with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft. (BPT) - Consumers are facing increasing costs on virtually every purchase these days and auto insurance is no exception. While skyrocketing costs of this auto-related expense can be attributed to everything from parts replacement to service — even health costs as a result of accidents — consumers can better manage these increases with thoughtful study and attention to detail. Some of the common causes for higher insurance rates are Inflation, car accidents, extreme weather conditions such as hail, hurricanes and wind, along with increased vehicle theft claims. Mercury Insurance has partnered with financial literacy influencer Sam Jarman to highlight specific ways consumers can address these rising costs. "Your car is the second biggest expense for most people, right behind your home, and car insurance is a big part of that," said Jarman. "Checking rates and coverage with your Mercury Insurance agent makes sense along with choosing a car with low maintenance costs." According to Consumer Price Index data released earlier this year, car insurance rates are up almost 21% year-over-year for the 12 months which ended in February. The last time car insurance rates rose that much on an annual basis was 1976. Here are some auto insurance statistics recently released from Forbes : "Our goal is to help our customers get the best rates possible because we know that every dollar counts." said Justin Yoshizawa, Director, Product Management, State. "We encourage consumers to build a close relationship with their agent and discuss what discounts they may be eligible to receive. The answer might be surprising." Mercury offers the following tips for lowering your insurance costs: Review your deductibles with your insurance agent – It is recommended that you review your coverage and deductible with your Mercury agent at least once a year. Their wisdom and experience can help you make wise decisions regarding your insurance. Explore car insurance discounts – In addition to bundling your home and auto insurance, Mercury offers discounts for multi-car, good drivers, good students and auto pay. Your agent may have additional discounts to offer. Let Your Insurer Track Your Driving – Most insurers offer discounts for customers who install telematics. This technology allows your insurance company to collect information regarding your mileage and driving habits. This can also provide valuable information regarding your driving as well as saving you money. Drive a safe car with low repair costs – According to Bankrate , some of the cheapest cars to insure are the Subaru Outback, Honda CR-V and Honda Pilot. Also, look for cars with lower repair costs such as the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius and Tesla Model 3. Doing some research before you purchase a vehicle can save you money over the length of ownership. Install an anti-theft device on your car – Drivers may receive an additional discount on your auto insurance if you install an anti-theft device on your car. Before you buy a car, compare insurance costs – You can get a fast and easy quote from your Mercury Insurance agent. To receive a quote, you can reach us at 844-514-2893. The longtime friendship was brought to light during Belichick's introductory press conference Thursday , which saw the 72-year-old admire conversations he and Saban had when Belichick decided to transition from coaching in the NFL to embarking on his newfound college football endeavors. Belichick kept his sentiments about Saban brief, but he took a moment to acknowledge how much Saban had meant to his career. "There's nobody I respect more than Coach Saban. He's been a great friend," Belichick said of his ex-Cleveland Browns assistant. That's high praise from arguably the greatest NFL coach of all time to one of the best college coaches ever. Saban recently appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and was asked how Belichick would fare in college after a year away from coaching. "Bill Belichick is an outstanding coach, and I think that he would do a great job in college," Saban said. Saban won seven national championships, six of them as Alabama's coach. Meanwhile, Belichick won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots over a two-decade period. Saban added Belichick could adapt quickly for one simple reason: the modern era of college football, which centers around NIL and the transfer portal. "College football is a lot more like the NFL now as well," Saban said. It's safe to assume that, even though conversations between the two will likely never be made public until years later, both admire one another, that will never change. For now, it remains to be seen how the ex-Patriots coach can turn around North Carolina. The Tar Heels play UConn in their bowl game, attempting to cap off a difficult season with seven wins.

With their ouster, the number of elected mayors that have been sacked since October rose to six. An Interior Ministry statement said the mayor of the mainly Kurdish-populated provincial capital of Tunceli was removed from office due to his past conviction and an ongoing investigation for links to the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. The district mayor for Ovacik, in Tunceli province, was sacked due to his past conviction of membership in the PKK, the statement said. The two mayors belong to the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party, or DEM, which is the third-largest party represented in Parliament. They were elected to office in local elections in March. Among those previously ousted was the mayor of Esenyurt, a district in Istanbul, who is a member of the main opposition Republican People’s Party, CHP. The mayor, Ahmet Ozer, was arrested last month, for alleged connections to the PKK. Opposition parties and human rights groups, however, accuse the government of undermining democracy and say the charges brought against the mayors are often politically motivated. LNG Energy Group Reiterates Value Proposition and Announces Financing and Process to Review Strategic Initiativesforward will have another notch in his belt as he heads toward Canadian Marner and Finnish (currently injured) were selected Wednesday to play in the 4 Nations Face-Off in February. Marner has been the best Leaf this season, while talk of a contract extension bubbles under the surface of what could be a career year for the 27-year-old from Thornhill. Injuries have created more opportunities for William Nylander, but could others be trying to send a message to Berube? Injuries have created more opportunities for William Nylander, but could others be trying to send a message to Berube? Though he took the brunt of criticism for the team’s latest failed playoff attempt, it’s clear Marner is held in high regard around the NHL. “He’s such a dangerous player,” said Nashville star Steven Stamkos, who was left off the Canadian team. “He’s great on the penalty kill. He’s so smart. He’s elusive. His edge work is great. We all talk about it as players, you play against these guys (Leafs) and you have an appreciation for how good they are. And because of the market that they’re in, they get a lot of attention — some negative and a lot probably unwarranted. That’s the way it is in this market. “But I think if you poll the league, they know how good of a player he is, and how important he is to that team.” Sweden and Finland rounded out their rosters for the 4 Nations Face-Off on Wednesday by choosing a handful of recent Stanley Cup champions in ... Sweden and Finland rounded out their rosters for the 4 Nations Face-Off on Wednesday by choosing a handful of recent Stanley Cup champions in ... Marner leads the Leafs with 33 points and has 12 multipoint games this season. He also leads the team in time on ice (a rarity for forwards) averaging 21 minutes and 34 seconds. “He’s got a great engine,” Leafs coach Craig Berube said. “His ice time is up, he plays in all situations. He’s out there a lot on the penalty kill. I don’t see him get too gassed or losing too much energy very often.” Auston Matthews (United States) and William Nylander (Sweden) had been pre-selected, so the Leafs are assured of having one player return with a gold medal from the tournament set for Feb. 12 to 20 in Montreal and Boston. The likes of and Morgan Rielly (both Canadian), Oliver Ekman-Larsson (Sweden) and Matthew Knies (U.S.) could still get there as injury replacements. On that front, Finland might need to replace Hakanpää, who has played only two games after off-season knee surgery and is on injured reserve again. “Just managing the knee, that’s all that is,” Berube said of the latest Hakanpää development. The Finns are somewhat hamstrung for the tournament, which is run by the NHL and requires the four countries to use NHLers only. Only 10 Finns have dressed as defencemen for NHL teams, and only seven have played regularly.

Toronto Sceptres open PWHL season with 3-1 comeback win over Boston FleetThe holiday shopping season has started fast, especially online, and those automated chatbots are working overtime. Artificial intelligence is increasingly finding its way into decisions that once were purely human, like whether or not to buy a sweater. This year, more than ever, smart computer programs are stepping between customers and their shopping. These programs make recommendations based on purchase history, browsing behavior and demographics. They also sharpen the results from online product searches, adjust prices based on competitive factors, and improve product placement or promotions. AI-powered customer service can answer questions and take orders. AI can even enable apparel shoppers to virtually “try on” clothes to see if they’ll fit. This integration of AI with routine tasks of our everyday lives isn’t new, but its ubiquity is growing. Merchants say their embrace of AI creates more efficient and personal shopping experiences. If Santa can tell when you’ve been bad or good, as the Christmas carol goes, imagine what a computer analyzing every keystroke can surmise about you and your holiday shopping list. Some AI applications rival science fiction. A recent survey of 2,000 adults under age 40 showed that 13% of young men and 9% of young women are open to friendships with AI-generated companions, and 1 in 4 young people say they believe AI partners could eventually replace real-life romance. The Institute for Family Studies, a conservative think tank that conducted the poll, concludes, “Robots aren’t just coming for your jobs but for your relationships, too.” In the U.S., this incursion is largely unregulated, which could be risky based on how AI is being used. The European Union has developed a sensible AI regulatory framework that rates the risk from “minimal” to “unacceptable.” Most AI related to holiday shopping falls into the catch-all category of “limited” risk, meaning the systems could be used to deceive people in relatively small ways. For example, the EU requires that chatbot programs conversing in text or voice make it clear that human users are interacting with AI, not other humans. The EU framework is still being sorted out, but at least the Europeans have one. In the U.S., Congress so far has failed to pass legislation, and the only national standards to date stemmed from an executive order that outgoing President Joe Biden imposed in 2023. With ex-President Donald Trump returning to the White House, Biden’s order is probably headed for the trash, and it’s unclear what AI guardrails a Trump administration might want, if any. ... During the run-up to Election Day, both Republicans and Democrats used AI to target messages and generate memes. Fortunately, the worst fears of a lifelike fake message or video disrupting the election never materialized. Advocates in the AI industry have pushed for rules of the road to help the technology gain acceptance and head off problems. The Europeans have provided a reasonable starting point. Now it’s up to the ruling GOP to recognize that imposing regulations on the AI free-for-all stands to promote innovation and ensure that these powerful tools are used in a manner that serves the public. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google on Wednesday unleashed another wave of artificial intelligence designed to tackle more of the work and thinking done by humans as it tries to stay on the technology's cutting edge while also trying to fend off regulatory threats to its empire. The next generation of Google's AI is being packaged under the Gemini umbrella, which was unveiled a year ago . Google is framing its release of Gemini 2.0 as a springboard for AI agents built to interpret images shown through a smartphone, perform a variety of tedious chores, remember the conversations consumers have with people, help video game players plot strategy and even tackle the task of doing online searches. In a blog post , Google CEO Sundar Pichai predicted the technology contained in Gemini 2.0 will “understand more about the world around you, think multiple steps ahead and take action on your behalf, with your supervision.” It's a similar goal being pursued by hard-charging rivals such as OpenAI, with its chatGPT technology, and industry powerhouse such as Microsoft with a variety of similar tools on its Windows software. A lot of Google's latest AI technology will initially be confined to test groups and subscribers who pay $20 per month for Gemini Advanced, but some features will be made available through its search engine and mobile apps. Google is planning wider releases next year that will include the technology popping up in its smorgasbord of free products, including its Chrome browser, digital maps and YouTube. Besides trying to outshine OpenAI and other ambitious startups, Google is also trying to stay a step ahead of Apple as that trendsetting company begins to blend AI into its latest iPhones and other devices. After releasing a software update enabling the first bundle of the iPhone's “Apple Intelligence” features that spruced up the device's Siri assistant, another batch of the AI technology came out with a free software update that was also released Wednesday. Google is pushing forward with its latest AI advances even as the U.S. Justice Department is trying to break up the Mountain View, California, company to prevent further abusive practices by its dominant search engine, which was declared an illegal monopoly by a federal judge earlier this year as part of a landmark antitrust case. Among other things, Gemini 2.0 is supposed to improve the AI overviews that Google began highlighting in its search results over its traditional listing of the most pertinent links to websites earlier this year in response to AI-powered “answer engines” such as Perplexity. After the AI overviews initially produced some goofy suggestions, including putting glue on pizza , Google refined the technology to minimize such missteps. Now, company executives are promising things are going to get even better with Gemini 2.0, which Pichai said will be able to engage in more human-like reasoning while solving more advanced math problems and even churn out some computer code. The improvements to AI Overviews will initially only appear to a test audience before a wider release next year. The technological upgrade is also supposed to infuse a still-experimental universal AI agent dubbed “Project Astra,” with even more smarts and versatility, enabling people to have more meaningful and helpful conversations with the technology. In a show of confidence, Google said it will expand the number of people testing Project Astra without providing any specifics of the group's size. As part of Gemini 2.0, Google is also going to begin testing an extension to Chrome called “Project Mariner,” which can be turned on to do online searches and sift through the results so people don't won't have to bother. If the U.S. Department of Justice gets its way, Google will be forced to sell or spin off Chrome as part of its punishment for deploying its search engine in ways that stifled competition and potential innovation. Google has ridiculed the Justice Department's proposal as “overly broad” and vowed to resist any attempt to break up the company during federal court hearings scheduled to begin in Washington D.C. next spring. Even if those proceedings culminate in a court order mandating a breakup, Google could still appeal in a process that could take years to resolve while it continues its AI expansion. “I can’t wait to see what this next era brings,” Pichai wrote in his blog post, signaling the company doesn't believe it will be deterred by regulators.I sincerely hope that whoever dreamt up the title Game of Throws (Sky Documentaries) for a show about darts was summoned to the Sky executives’ office — and given a slap on the back. It’s up there, for wit, with Desperate Scousewives and Good Will Humping , though granted that last one is in a different genre altogether (clue: Stormy Daniels was in it). The darts isn’t bad, either. If the documentary’s intention is to show a new side to the game once associated with fag smoke, sticky carpets and pasty-faced, fat-bellied men in gold chains (though there were quite a few “generously proportioned” chaps here, to be fair), it succeeds. Darts has transformed Cinderella-like into the cool, buzzy, upbeat “people’s sport” (in the newDoors & Windows Market Size, Analytical Overview, Growth Factors, Demand and Trends Forecast to 2029 | ASSA ABLOY, LIXIL Corporation, Cornerstone Building Brands, Inc. 12-11-2024 09:48 PM CET | Business, Economy, Finances, Banking & Insurance Press release from: ABNewswire Browse 335 market data Tables and 54 Figures spread through 272 Pages and in-depth TOC on "Doors & Windows Market" The Doors & Windows Market is thriving, driven by urbanization, smart home trends, and energy efficiency demands. Mumbai, November 30: Ajmer Sharif Dargah, located in the city of Ajmer in Rajasthan, is one of the most revered Islamic shrines in India. The dargah (tomb) of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, a renowned Sufi saint, draws millions of devotees from across the world. Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, who arrived in India from Persia in the 12th century, is regarded as a symbol of love, peace, and spiritual enlightenment. He is known for his teachings of harmony, compassion, and selflessness. The Ajmer Sharif Dargah complex consists of several buildings, including a mosque, the main tomb of the saint, and other structures that serve as a space for prayers and rituals. The shrine is a centre of pilgrimage for both Muslims and people of various faiths, who come to offer prayers, seek blessings, and fulfil vows. The annual Urs festival, marking the death anniversary of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, is one of the major events at the Ajmer Dargah, attracting thousands of devotees who come to participate in qawwalis, prayers, and other spiritual activities. The Ajmer Sharif Dargah has been embroiled in a legal dispute. As the row unfolds over Ajmer Sharif Dargah, here's everything you need to know about the controversy. Ajmer Dargah Row: Court Issues Notice Over Plea Claiming Shiva Temple in Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan . What is Ajmer Sharif Dargah Controvery? A lawsuit filed in September has sparked a major controversy over the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, with claims that it was originally a Shiva temple before being converted into a Sufi shrine. Vishnu Gupta, the petitioner, has asked for the site to be recognised as a Hindu place of worship and requested a survey by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). He also seeks the cancellation of the dargah's official registration. Court Notice Seeks Response from Dargah Committee, Central Govt, and ASI The Rajasthan court issued a notice on November 27 to the Dargah Committee, the Ministry of Minority Affairs, and the ASI, seeking their responses to the allegations. This legal dispute has stirred political reactions, particularly in light of recent communal tensions in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal. ‘Painful’, ‘What’s the Problem’: Intense Debate Over Court Notice on Ajmer Sharif Dargah Plea . The case has raised concerns regarding the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act of 1991, which prohibits altering the religious character of a place of worship as it stood on August 15, 1947, except for the Babri Masjid. However, a 2023 Supreme Court ruling allowing surveys of religious sites, such as the Gyanvapi Mosque, has led to a series of similar petitions and disputes, escalating the matter. The next hearing in the Ajmer Sharif Dargah case is set for December 20. (The above story first appeared on LatestLY on Nov 30, 2024 08:01 PM IST. The New York Yankees inked Max Fried, but the Dodgers' rotation still outnumbers them in big-name, frontline arms. In a high-priced offseason that has featured several big-market clubs bolstering their rosters — or at least make lucrative bids in an attempt to do so — the Dodgers still reign supreme in baseball's hierarchy of contenders, well positioned coming out of this week's winter meetings to mount a World Series title defense. And yet as they embark on the rest of the offseason, they seem primed to keep trying to add to their collection of premium talent. "We've made some moves that have set a real strong foundation for a successful team," general manager Brandon Gomes said Wednesday as the meetings wound down at the Hilton Anatole. "Now we'll take the next couple weeks leading up to spring training to explore what's out there." The Dodgers already have been busy in free agency. They landed an ace, Blake Snell, on a $182-million contract. They also added outfield depth in Michael Conforto, re-signed Blake Treinen to shore up the bullpen and locked up utility man Tommy Edman to a five-year extension. If the season began tomorrow, they'd almost certainly be favored to win a second consecutive championship. "I like the way the offseason has played out," manager Dave Roberts said this week. "Certainly with what we've done so far, we've gotten better." But they remain hopeful that more improvement will come before they start next season — and receive their World Series rings — in a little more than three months. "We'll continue to try to make moves we feel are needle-movers," Gomes said. "Whether that's impact moves, or depth moves, all those play into our quest to repeat." The most obvious move would be bringing back Teoscar Hernández, among the few impact outfield bats still available. However, any hope of a quick negotiation between the Dodgers and the two-time All-Star went out the window long ago. And Dodgers executives offered rather foreboding quotes when asked this week about the negotiations. "I know that he has talked about wanting to [stay in Los Angeles], I know that we have talked about wanting him to, so again, that's helpful — but it's not everything," president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. "He and his family get to go through the interest and figure out what makes the most sense for them. So, while we're hopeful, at the same time, if he ends up signing somewhere else, we have no choice but to wish him well." The sides continued to talk this week, according to people with knowledge of the situation not authorized to speak publicly, and are believed to be close enough in negotiations that a deal remains possible. If it happens, that would check one big box off the Dodgers' remaining to-do list. But, with or without Hernández, they are eyeing other potential big-name acquisitions in the coming weeks. Roki Sasaki's posting will be perhaps their biggest focus. The 23-year-old Japanese pitcher is expected to begin meeting with teams as soon as next week, according to his agent, Joel Wolfe. Friedman said Tuesday the Dodgers were putting the finishing touches on their presentation to the hard-throwing right-hander, who will field broad interest from teams since he is restricted to signing a minor-league contract with a modest signing bonus. "He has talked about his desire to be the best pitcher in the world, and we believe that he is capable of being the best pitcher in the world," Friedman said. "He's someone that is obviously a major priority for us." He won't be the only one, though. In the bullpen, the Dodgers have targeted top free-agent reliever Tanner Scott as well as top trade candidate Devin Williams of the Milwaukee Brewers, as the Athletic first reported. The Dodgers showed interest in Scott at last year's trade deadline only to watch him go to the San Diego Padres and emerge as a particularly difficult matchup for Shohei Ohtani in the National League Division Series. Williams is coming off three consecutive seasons of sub-2.00 earned-run averages with the Brewers, who reportedly are looking to move him ahead of his final season before free agency. The trade market offers more possibilities, though the Dodgers aren't obvious fits for any of the biggest potential names. Gomes effectively ruled the team out of contention for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado this week, declaring that Max Muncy is "going to play third base for us" in the wake of rumors that Arenado (an Orange County native and former Dodgers trade deadline target) would waive his no-trade clause to join the team. The Dodgers haven't been linked to Houston Astros star outfielder Kyle Tucker, either, with other teams like the Chicago Cubs and Yankees reportedly lining up better for the three-time All-Star, who will be a free agent after next season. If the Dodgers don't re-sign Hernández, they could get more aggressive on the trade market, where the Cubs' Seiya Suzuki is another player reportedly on the block (though he has a no-trade clause and might not end up getting dealt). In the event the Dodgers still need outfield reinforcements, Friedman noted there are also "interesting guys" remaining in free agency, though no one as productive as Hernández was last year, nor with the cache he has built in the Dodgers' clubhouse. "There's different ways we can get at this," Friedman said of the outfield plans, with at least one more addition likely needed. "We can have a team that has a little bit more power. We can have a team that makes a little bit more contact. We can have a team that plays a little bit better defense. There's just a lot of different ways to get at value and production and winning baseball games. So, with that, it opens some things up." At this point, the Dodgers are keeping all sorts of options open. They feel good about their roster. They believe a strong foundation is in place. Now, they can spend the rest of the winter trying to round out the rest of their team, hopeful the offseason will culminate with a few more big splashes. ©2024 Los Angeles Times. Visit latimes.com . Wade Taylor IV racked up 19 points that included eight in the final 3:22 of the game as No. 22 Texas A&M outlasted Texas Tech 72-67 on Sunday afternoon in the USLBM Coast-to-Coast Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. Texas A&M (8-2) led by as many as 11 points in the first half and by three at halftime before the Red Raiders surged to the front early in the second half. Down 52-49, the Aggies produced an 11-0 surge capped by a jumper by Zhuric Phelps to take a 60-52 advantage with 5:02 to play The Aggies' margin was just two points when Taylor went hard to the hole on back-to-back possessions for layups that pushed the lead to 64-58. A 3-pointer by Tech's Chance McMillian cut lead to three but Taylor, Henry Coleman III and Solomon Washington converted free throws over the final 27 seconds to provide the deciding points for A&M. Jace Carter added 16 points and Phelps had 12 for the Aggies, who have won four straight games. McMillian's 23 points were a game high, while Kevin Overton added 17 and Darrion Williams had 11 for Texas Tech (7-2), which had a three-game winning streak snapped. The Aggies ruled the game's first five minutes, blitzing to a 13-2 lead thanks to eight early points from Taylor and a stifling defense that forced Tech into four turnovers. The Red Raiders responded with an 8-2 run capped by a jumper by Federiko Federiko to close the gap to five points at the 10:57 mark. Texas Tech continued to battle back, clawing to within 26-24 with 5:16 left in the first half thanks to a 9-0 run. Texas A&M boosted the margin to as many as six points after Manny Obaseki hit a layup with 2:23 remaining before McMillian canned a pair of free throws with 41 seconds to play to pull to within 34-31 at the break. Overton led all scorers with 14 points before halftime while Carter paced the Aggies with 13. The Red Raiders pulled even on Federiko's jumper 46 seconds into the second half, went in front on a jumper by Elijah Hawkins with 18:22 to play and pushed their advantage to five points on another Hawkins jumper at the 16:30 mark of the half. The Aggies swung back, tying the contest at 49 when Washington sank a 3-pointer with 10:48 left, setting the stage for the furious finish. --Field Level MediaAnna University rape case: Madras HC orders SIT probe, Rs 25L compensationForrest's 30 lead N.C. Abortion has become slightly more common despite bans or deep restrictions in most Republican-controlled states, and the legal and political fights over its future are not over yet. It's now been two and a half years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and opened the door for states to implement bans. The policies and their impact have been in flux ever since the ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. Here's a look at data on where things stand: Overturning Roe and enforcing abortion bans has changed how woman obtain abortions in the U.S. But one thing it hasn't done is put a dent in the number of abortions being obtained. There have been slightly more monthly abortions across the country recently than there were in the months leading up to the June 2022 ruling, even as the number in states with bans dropped to near zero. “Abortion bans don’t actually prevent abortions from happening,” said Ushma Upadhyay, a public health social scientist at the University of California San Francisco. But, she said, they do change care. For women in some states, there are major obstacles to getting abortions — and advocates say that low-income, minority and immigrant women are least likely to be able to get them when they want. For those living in states with bans, the ways to access abortion are through travel or abortion pills. As the bans swept in, abortion pills became a bigger part of the equation. They were involved in about half the abortions before Dobbs. More recently, it’s been closer to two-thirds of them, according to research by the Guttmacher Institute. The uptick of that kind of abortion, usually involving a combination of two drugs, was underway before the ruling. But now, it's become more common for pill prescriptions to be made by telehealth. By the summer of 2024, about 1 in 10 abortions was via pills prescribed via telehealth to patients in states where abortion is banned. As a result, the pills are now at the center of battles over abortion access. This month, Texas sued a New York doctor for prescribing pills to a Texas woman via telemedicine. There's also an effort by Idaho , Kansas and Missouri to roll back their federal approvals and treat them as “controlled dangerous substances,” and a push for the federal government to start enforcing a 19th-century federal law to ban mailing them. Clinics have closed or halted abortions in states with bans. But a network of efforts to get women seeking abortions to places where they're legal has strengthened and travel for abortion is now common. The Guttmacher Institute found that more than twice as many Texas residents obtained abortion in 2023 in New Mexico as New Mexico residents did. And as many Texans received them in Kansas as Kansans. Abortion funds, which benefitted from “rage giving” in 2022, have helped pay the costs for many abortion-seekers. But some funds have had to cap how much they can give. Since the downfall of Roe, the actions of lawmakers and courts have kept shifting where abortion is legal and under what conditions. Here's where it stands now: Florida , the nation’s third most-populous state, began enforcing a ban on abortions after the first six weeks of pregnancy on May 1. That immediately changed the state from one that was a refuge for other Southerners seeking abortion to an exporter of people looking for them. There were about 30% fewer abortions there in May compared with the average for the first three months of the year. And in June, there were 35% fewer. While the ban is not unique, the impact is especially large. The average driving time from Florida to a facility in North Carolina where abortion is available for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is more than nine hours, according to data maintained by Caitlin Myers, a Middlebury College economics professor. The bans have meant clinics closed or stopped offering abortions in some states. But some states where abortion remains legal until viability – generally considered to be sometime past 21 weeks of pregnancy, though there’s no fixed time for it – have seen clinics open and expand. Illinois , Kansas and New Mexico are among the states with new clinics. There were 799 publicly identifiable abortion providers in the U.S. in May 2022, the month before the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade. And by this November, it was 792, according to a tally by Myers, who is collecting data on abortion providers. But Myers says some hospitals that always provided some abortions have begun advertising it. So they’re now in the count of clinics – even though they might provide few of them. How hospitals handle pregnancy complications, especially those that threaten the lives of the women, has emerged as a major issue since Roe was overturned. President Joe Biden's administration says hospitals must offer abortions when they're needed to prevent organ loss, hemorrhage or deadly infections, even in states with bans. Texas is challenging the administration’s policy and the U.S. Supreme Court this year declined to take it up after the Biden administration sued Idaho. More than 100 pregnant women seeking help in emergency rooms and were turned away or left unstable since 2022, The Associated Press found in an analysis of federal hospital investigative records. Among the complaints were a woman who miscarried in the lobby restroom of Texas emergency room after staff refused to see her and a woman who gave birth in a car after a North Carolina hospital couldn't offer an ultrasound. The baby later died. “It is increasingly less safe to be pregnant and seeking emergency care in an emergency department,” Dara Kass, an emergency medicine doctor and former U.S. Health and Human Services official told the AP earlier this year. Since Roe was overturned, there have been 18 reproductive rights-related statewide ballot questions. Abortion rights advocates have prevailed on 14 of them and lost on four. In the 2024 election, they amended the constitutions in five states to add the right to abortion. Such measures failed in three states: In Florida, where it required 60% support; in Nebraska , which had competing abortion ballot measures; and in South Dakota , where most national abortion rights groups did support the measure. AP VoteCast data found that more than three-fifths of voters in 2024 supported abortion being legal in all or most cases – a slight uptick from 2020. The support came even as voters supported Republicans to control the White House and both houses of Congress. ___ Associated Press writers Linley Sanders, Amanda Seitz and Laura Ungar contributed to this article.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump is telling the Supreme Court that he can make a deal that will resolve the national security dispute over TikTok and preserve the video site for 170 million Americans. All the justices need to do, he says, is to stand aside and suspend a pending law that could shut down TikTok on Jan. 19, the day before Trump takes office again. "President Trump alone possesses the consummate deal-making expertise, the electoral mandate, and the political will to negotiate a resolution to save the platform," his attorney said in a friend-of-the court brief filed Friday night. His plan might work, at least to buy more time. The justices had agreed to make a fast-track decision on the potentially momentous issue involving social media and free speech. "I think the court is likely to see great benefit in issuing a stay and little downside," said University of California, Berkeley Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky. "The case poses a novel and very difficult First Amendment issue. Never before has the government tried to ban a medium of communication, but there also is a history of judicial deference to national security claims." Before Trump's intervention, TikTok appeared to face a difficult fight in the court. The House and Senate had passed legislation by large bipartisan majorities requiring the platform to separate itself from its Chinese owner or to shut down in this country. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law in April. And by its terms, it was scheduled to take effect in 270 days. Although the justices are not shy about striking down federal regulations, they are wary of overturning an act of Congress, particularly one that is based on threats to national security. The U.S. appeals court in Washington cited national security when it upheld the law earlier this month. In a 3-0 decision, the judges said the law did not target speech or expression. Rather, lawmakers were convinced the Chinese parent company could gather personal data on millions of Americans, the judges said. If the law took effect on Jan. 19, Apple, Oracle and other U.S. companies could have faced large civil fines if they continued to work with TikTok. Trump's attorney D. John Sauer filed a friend-of-the-court brief that differed in tone and substance from all the others. Rather than weigh in on the First Amendment question the justices had agreed to decide , he explained why Trump was better-suited to decide it. "Through his historic victory on November 5, 2024, President Trump received a powerful electoral mandate from American voters to protect the free-speech rights of all Americans — including the 170 million Americans who use TikTok," he wrote. "Moreover, President Trump is one of the most powerful, prolific, and influential users of social media in history." Noting that Trump has 14.7 million followers on TikTok, Sauer argued that the president-elect is well-positioned "to evaluate TikTok's importance as a unique medium for freedom of expression, including core political speech." He also wrote that as the founder of another social-media platform, Truth Social, Trump has "an in-depth perspective on the extraordinary government power attempted to be exercised in this case — the power of the federal government to effectively shut down a social-media platform favored by tens of millions of Americans." "In light of these interests — including, most importantly, his overarching responsibility for the United States' national security and foreign policy — President Trump opposes banning TikTok in the United States at this juncture, and seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office." In 2020, Trump had voiced alarm over TikTok because of its Chinese ownership. Lawmakers later heard classified briefings that convinced them the foreign ownership posed a danger. But by the time the law won approval, Trump had switched sides. He said he believed TikTok helped him win the support of young voters. "TikTok had an impact, so we're taking a look at it," he told reporters two weeks ago. "I have a little warm spot in my heart." A year ago, his attorney Sauer drew criticism from some legal experts for boldly asserting that Trump as a former president had an absolute immunity from criminal charges for his official acts while in office. But in July, he won a 6-3 ruling from the Supreme Court that gave him and Trump what he had sought. Sauer is now set to represent Trump and his administration before the Supreme Court as U.S. solicitor general. He did not say precisely what the court should do now, only that it "should consider staying the statutory deadline to grant more breathing space" to the incoming administration and that one provision in the law allowed for a 90-day extension before it took effect. The court asked for responses to the competing briefs by next Friday. It scheduled two hours of argument for Jan. 10. It's not certain the justices will readily comply with Trump's request. Two weeks ago, former Trump attorney Noel Francisco filed an appeal on TikTok's behalf urging the justices to put the law on hold for a brief period. But the justices brushed aside that suggestion and said they would decide whether divestiture law violated the First Amendment. "I am skeptical Trump's intervention will make a difference," said Alan Rozenshtein, a University of Minnesota law professor who has written about the pending law. He noted that the Supreme Court denied TikTok's request to stay the law because it did not think TikTok could meet the requirements for a stay: a reasonable chance of winning on the merits. "Trump's argument does not change that," he said. "It may be bad luck for TikTok (and Trump) that the law goes into effect the day before inauguration, but such is life." ©2024 Los Angeles Times. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies have signed closer Jordan Romano to an $8.5 million, one-year contract, making a short-term bet that the right-hander can return to form following a right elbow injury. As part of the deal, which was announced by the Phillies on Monday, Romano earns an additional $500,000 if he pitches at least 60 innings. An All-Star in 2022 and 2023, Romano spent the first six seasons of his major league career with the Toronto Blue Jays. He has 105 career saves and a 2.90 ERA in 231 relief appearances. Of the 17 pitchers in the majors with at least 100 save opportunities since 2019, Romano’s 88.98% save percentage ranks second, trailing only Josh Hader (187 for 210, 89.04%). Among all pitchers in baseball since 2019, Romano’s 105 saves rank ninth. The 31-year-old Romano was limited to just eight saves in 15 games last season. He had arthroscopic surgery on his elbow in July. Romano was cut by Toronto last month, when the team declined to offer him a contract that would have made him eligible for arbitration. Romano’s arrival could lead to the departures of one or both of Carlos Estévez and Jeff Hoffman from Philadelphia. The former All-Star relievers both closed games for the Phillies last season but each suffered epic meltdowns in the postseason. Both pitchers are free agents. ___ AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb11 spin ph casino login

Fresh off their open date, the Baltimore Ravens prepare for their schedule to become busyAP News Summary at 6:19 p.m. EST

The set of GB News descended into chaos this afternoon, on December 28, as two presenters came to blows. Alex Cairns and Nana Akua clashed massively, live on air, over the topic of illegal migration. They had been discussing whether or not Labour were right to scrap the Rwanda plan . The former government's plans aimed to decrease the number of migrant crossings in the English channel, stop human smuggling, and boost Rwandan investment and development. Alex pointed out that "lots of people are using criminal gangs" and "paying them thousands of pounds" to head over to the UK. Hitting out at the Labour government, the GB News guest added: "They wouldn't be coming over on small boats had the Home Office not been a mess for so many years." He continued saying that the criminal gangs are "exploiting poor people". Nana interrupted as she asked: "What about the Albanians? There are lots of people coming over in their droves and there's no persecution going on there." Alex replied: "The majority of people that are coming over on small boats Nana, you know this, are..." His co-star seemed somewhat annoyed as she cut in to say: "No, no, don't tell me what I know. You don't know what I know." "But we've discussed this," Alex argued back. "We've looked at the stats before and actually it's very much about the fact that the middle east - Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran - all these countries that have mutliple geopolitical issues are coming over on small boats. "Why? Because they can't get visa applications through quickly enough." But Nana hit out at Alex saying that what he was saying "doesn't really make sense". She said: "We have deals with people from Afghanistan. And even when we have deals with people they're still using the small boats." The presenter quizzed: "Why would you come via small boat if there is actually a safe and legal route for you to apply for a safe refuge in this country?" Alex hit back saying: "Because it's taking too long and they're living in very difficult routes that we can't relate to." At that point the hosts then began to shout over each other with Nana accusing Alex of having "excuses". Things became rather heated as they both tried to get their points across while raising their voices and interrupting each other. Fans of the news channel hit out at Alex on social media. One user wrote: "He offered no reasonable counter arguments whatsoever." Another added: "What an arrogant and very out of touch man he is. Just after a few minutes of his dreadful attitude I had to switch over." Meanwhile, a third said: "The beta male is hilarious. He defeats himself with his own arguments. Demonstrably ignorant of the facts."George Kresge Jr., who wowed talk show audiences as the The Amazing Kreskin, dies

Hallmark Fave Andrew Walker Goes Inside His Skincare Line and Shares Holiday Plans (VIDEO)

READER POLL: How would you grade the Orioles’ signing of Tyler O’Neill?Thankfully, Walker is one of the authentically good ones. Humble, engaging, totally Canadian, and a dang workhorse. The Montreal-born actor-producer has shot six movies for Hallmark this year, including Countdown to Christmas’s Jingle Bell Run and Three Wiser Men and a Boy ! On top of that, he’s also a husband, father of two sons, and an entrepreneur, having co-founded the SkinMason skincare line ... which is clearly working, since there are zero signs of fatigue on his matinee-idol mug. “Obviously I use skincare on a daily basis, and when I wrap from set, I’m always washing my face off,” he explains of the inspiration behind SkinMason. “I have used very abrasive products that have given me skin [issues], I’ve broken out, I’ve had rashes. I used to have these little alcohol wipes to take the rest of my makeup off.” During a dinner with his friend Dr. Hussein Kanji, a heart and lung surgeon who’s “always working with different types of products for [organ] detoxification and antioxidants,” the two agreed to partner on a product line. SkinMason “He had an idea for a very simple yet effective skincare brand, ideally targeted to men to start with, because the women’s space is so massive...but women and men can use the same skincare,” Walker continues. “And I said I’d love to venture into this, first off, because my wife [Cassandra] always scolded me for using way too much of her expensive skincare products—I don’t know what to use! It’s like, there’s so many products out there.” Two years later, Walker and Kanji had the first two core products of the line, exfoliating wipes and a serum, which were soon followed by their new moisturizer. “We don’t even call it a moisturizer. It’s a bioactive cream.” Noting that Jean Carruthers, the co-innovator of Botox, has endorsed all of their products, Walker explains that their formula boasts retinoid, Vitamins C, and phospholipids that rebuild collagen. The SkinMason site is having a 40 percent off Black Friday sale and you can order each item individually or as a set, with a VIP subscription for regular refill orders at a 10 percent discount. Better yet, he laughs, “My wife has now turned on to using my products!” Andrew Walker / Instagram Speaking of his wife, how do the Walkers plan to spend the holidays? “With family,” he immediately offers. “We moved up to Vancouver for a year and it’s been amazing. It’s been quiet because we live next to a forest. So the holidays this year are just going to be family and trying to take a moment to put away the phones, put away technology, and just focus my time on my kids and my wife and each other.” Now that is a good look for everyone.
