OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Sira Thienou scored 16 points with six rebounds, five assists and four steals and No. 18 Mississippi coasted to an 89-24 win over Alabama State on Saturday. Starr Jacobs and Christeen Iwuala both added 12 points and Kennedy Todd-Williams had 11 for the Rebels (5-2), who had a breather after losing to No. 2 UConn by 13 in the Bahamas. Kaitlyn Bryant had seven points to lead the Hornets (2-5), who shot 19% with 33 turnovers and were outrebounded 43-25. Alabama State was 1 of 8 with 11 turnovers in the first quarter, falling behind 24-4. The Hornets were 2 of 11 with seven giveaways in the second quarter when they were outscored 33-6 to trail 57-10 at the half. The Rebels shot 58% with 28 points off turnovers. They scored the first 16 points of the game and the first 24 points of the second quarter. Ole Miss had the last five points of the third quarter and the first seven of the fourth to get the lead to 82-22. The Hornets went 1 of 10 in the final 10 minutes with 10 turnovers. Tracking health data? Here's what could happenRethinking Telecommunications with Satellite-Cellphone ConnectivityDETROIT — In the end, the amount and way the Red Wings were losing lately was simply too much to ignore. And with that, the Wings fired coach Derek Lalonde and replaced him with former San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan on Thursday. In a release just after noon, the Wings announced that Steve Yzerman, the Wings’ executive vice-president and general manager, named McLellan the team’s 29th head coach in franchise history and signed McLellan to a multi-year contract. The Wings also hired Trent Yawney as an assistant coach, replacing Bob Boughner, another former Sharks head coach who oversaw the defense and penalty-kill. McLellan will be behind the bench Friday, as the Wings return from the three-day NHL holiday break to host Toronto. Yzerman and McLellan will address the media on Friday. McLellan is San Jose’s all-time winningest coach, compiling a 311-155-63 mark over seven full seasons from 2008-15. He won three Pacific Division titles and had a 30-32 record in the postseason, reaching the conference finals in 2010 and 2011. McLellan’s Sharks teams finished with more than 100 points four times, winning the President’s Trophy in the 2008-09 season that also saw McLellan named a finalist for the Jack Adams Trophy as coach of the year. The Wings have struggled to a 13-17-4 record, good for 30 points, just two points above Buffalo for last place in the Eastern Conference. They trail Ottawa by eight points (38-30) for the final of two Eastern Conference wild-card positions. After just missing the playoffs last spring on the final night of the season on a tiebreaker, the Wings struggled from the start this season. They lost three of their first four games and have struggled mightily to get to, or above, the .500 mark ever since. The Wings have lost their last three games, and the way they did likely pushed Yzerman to replace Lalonde. The Wings let a third-period lead slip away at Little Caesars on Dec. 20 to Montreal and lost, 4-3, then lost the next night in Montreal, 5-1, watching the Canadiens score the last five goals consecutively with not a ton of pushback. Monday, the Wings were shut, 4-0, at LCA, looking listless, at times. The Wings were serenaded with a loud chorus of boos after each period, culminating with a lot of pent-up frustration at the end of the game. Lalonde, 52, ended his Wings career with an 89-86-23 record. This was his first NHL head-coaching job, and he was in his third season guiding the Wings. After last season’s exciting finish and near-playoff miss, there was plenty of optimism heading into this Wings season. The team’s overall defense needed to improve, and scoring was expected to be an issue because of the personnel losses the Wings had, but the roster appeared to be competitive. But Lalonde wasn’t able to appreciably fix any of the problem areas. The Wings rank 25th in goals-against (3.26), only slightly better than last season’s final average (3.35). Scoring goals has been a larger-than-expected issue. With the departures of Jake Walman, Shayne Gostisbehere, David Perron, Robby Fabbri and Daniel Sprong, the Wings were hoping for internal improvement, but it hasn’t happened. They currently rank 29th, at 2.56 goals scored per game (the Wings were 13th last season, scoring 3.12 goals per game). Add to that, a dismal penalty kill that ranks 31st (68.8%), and it’s made for a frustrating season. In steps McLellan, 57, who was an assistant coach under Mike Babcock from 2005-08. Yzerman, incidentally, was the captain in his final playing season and first season for McLellan in Detroit under Babcock. McLellan has 16 seasons of NHL head-coaching experience, posting a 598-412-134 regular-season record and a 42-46 postseason mark with the Los Angeles Kings (2019-24), Edmonton Oilers (2015-19) and Sharks (2008-15). His 598 regular-season wins are ranked 24th in NHL history and sixth-most among active coaches behind Paul Maurice (891), Lindy Ruff (876), Peter Laviolette (823), John Tortorella (757) and Peter DeBoer (632). Teams coached by McLellan have reached the 50-win mark three times and the 100-point plateau six times. McLellan’s teams have also advanced to the Stanley Cup playoffs nine times, including six consecutive postseason appearances with the Sharks. Related Articles Known as an upbeat coach with strong communication skills, McLellan is regarded as an effective coach of young players dating back to a successful junior hockey coaching career. McLellan, along with Yzerman, will be under increasing pressure to end a Wings’ streak of not making the playoffs for eight consecutive seasons. Only Buffalo, at 13 seasons, has a longer current streak. The Latest: UnitedHealthcare shooting suspect contests his extradition back to New York

A federal judge temporarily halts the proposed supermarket merger of Kroger and Albertsons A federal judge has temporarily halted a proposed merger between supermarket giants Kroger and Albertsons, an action that could scuttle the deal. U.S. District Court Judge Adrienne Nelson issued the ruling Tuesday after holding a three-week hearing in Portland, Oregon. Kroger and Albertsons in 2022 proposed what would be the largest grocery store merger in U.S. history. But the Federal Trade Commission sued earlier this year, asking Nelson to block the $24.6 billion deal until an in-house administrative judge at the FTC could consider the merger’s implications. Former chairman of state-owned bank China Everbright Group jailed for 12 years for corruption BEIJING (AP) — Chinese official broadcaster CCTV says a former chairman of the state-owned bank China Everbright Group has been jailed 12 years for embezzlement and bribery. Tang Shuangning, who had also held senior posts at the People’s Bank of China and the China Banking Regulatory Commission, was arrested in January, part of a wider wave of prosecutions of senior officials accused of financial crimes. A court in the city of Tangshan, about 100 miles east of Beijing, found him guilty of taking advantage of his position at the state-owned bank in “seeking convenience for others” in jobs and loans, in exchange for illegal payments. The court said he had accepted illegal property with a total value of more than $1.5 million. US defense secretary in Japan to support alliance as Osprey aircraft safety causes concern TOKYO (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has met with officials in Japan to reaffirm the importance of their alliance and Washington's commitment to regional security as threats rise from China and North Korea. Austin’s visit on Tuesday also came amid growing concerns over the safety of Ospreys. The military aircraft have been grounded in the United States following a near crash at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico last month. The incident was caused by weakened metal components. It was similar to a fatal crash off southwestern Japan last year. The U.S. measure prompted the suspension of Ospreys operated by Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force. Trustee over Infowars auction asks court to approve The Onion's winning bid A trustee who oversaw the bankruptcy auction of Alex Jones’ Infowars is asking a judge to approve The Onion’s winning bid for the conspiracy-filled platform. Trustee Christopher Murray took the stand Tuesday in the second day of testimony at a hearing where a judge is scrutinizing the satirical news outlet’s winning offer. He told U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez in Houston that he was there asking a court to approve the sale of Infowars’ parent company to The Onion’s parent company. It is not clear how quickly Lopez will rule. The Onion wants to turn Infowars’ website and social media accounts into parodies. Small businesses plan events, start marketing earlier to deal with shorter holiday shopping season The holiday shopping season is underway, and this year small businesses have less time to capitalize on the busy shopping period. Only 27 days separate Thanksgiving and Christmas — five fewer than last year. But there are still ways to make the most of a shorter season. One key strategy is for owners to promote deals to customers wherever they can, from social media to physical ads. The National Retail Federation predicts that retail sales will rise between 2.5% and 3.5% compared with same period a year ago. Online shopping is expected to grow too. Adobe Digital Insights predicts an 8.4% increase online for the full season. 10 notable books of 2024, from Sarah J. Alaska Airlines will spread its wings by flying to Tokyo and Seoul beginning next year NEW YORK (AP) — Alaska Airlines says it will launch service from Seattle to Tokyo and Seoul next year as part of a plan to boost international flying in the next several years. Fortnite players 'tricked' into unwanted purchases are starting to get refunds. Here's how to apply NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. consumers who were tricked into purchases they didn’t want from Fortnite maker Epic Games are now starting to receive refund checks, the Federal Trade Commission said this week. Back in 2022, Epic agreed to pay a total of $520 million to settle complaints revolving around children’s privacy and payment methods on its popular Fortnite game. The FTC alleged that the video game giant used deceptive online design tactics to trick Fortnite players, including children, into making unintended purchases that could be based on simply pressing one button. The settlement includes $245 million in customer refunds. Now, the first batch of those refunds are being sent out — but eligible consumers can still submit a claim through January 10. Portfolio Change: One Stock To Buy, November 22In pro golf parlance, Saturday is “moving day,” the penultimate day of a tournament when players try to improve their standing to make a run at the title in the final round. For the Steelers, this time of year is similar. Particularly under Mike Tomlin, the stretch between mid-November and mid-December typically has played a major role in defining the vast majority of the past 17 seasons. Since Tomlin was hired in 2007, the Steelers have had a tendency to either salvage a foundering season by triggering a late run or have undergone some degree of a collapse to sully what had the appearance of a successful campaign. On seven occasions under Tomlin, the Steelers have started runs that included a winning streak and/or stretch of at least six wins in eight games at some point between Week 10 and Week 13. But Tomlin also has presided over six seasons that went the other way: Steelers teams with winning records have, between Weeks 10 and 13, started streaks of three straight losses or started skids of 1-3, 1-4 or 1-5. During four of those instances, the Steelers went from playoff position to missing the postseason. This is all relevant to these 2024 Steelers, who, after 11 weeks, sat at 8-2 and held a 1 1/2-game lead in the AFC North. That was until Thursday night’s 24-19 defeat at the Cleveland Browns. A solitary loss, in the big picture, might not define the season, particularly one on a short week to a division rival in a snowstorm. Chalk it up as “stuff happens,” right? Maybe, but the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers of 2009 probably were telling themselves that when, at 6-2, they lost a divisional home game to the Cincinnati Bengals. It was the start of the five-game losing streak, and the Steelers missed the playoffs. Or what about three years later? The Steelers were riding high on a four-game winning streak when, during Week 11, another AFC North foe, the Baltimore Ravens, won at Heinz Field. It was the start of a stretch of five losses in six games, again costing the Steelers a playoff berth. The 2018 Steelers were 7-2-1 and, on Thanksgiving weekend, lost in Denver to begin a three-game slide that kept them home in January. Stumbles late in the 2007, 2019 and 2020 seasons also screeched the brakes on encouraging seasons of varying degrees. Can these Steelers — winners of five straight before Thursday — avoid a similar fate? They insist so. “We have a lot of football left. We have a lot of opportunities to respond in the highest way, highest level,” quarterback Russell Wilson said. “Everything that we want is still in front of us. We have to be able to refresh after this weekend. After these Thursday night games, just played a tough game on Sunday and you come back and have another game Thursday night, it’s a lot of games in a short amount of days. We have to let our bodies recover, reset mentally, and then come back and push for the stretch.” Tomlin gave the Steelers a four-day respite from practice. But he has no way of offering relief from the gauntlet of games that awaits. Three of the remaining six opponents are among the five biggest favorites to win the Super Bowl (per FanDuel betting odds): the Kansas City Chiefs, Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles. Another is against the team that just beat them, the Browns. And the remaining two are against one of the NFL’s best offenses — and best quarterbacks — Joe Burrow and the rival Bengals. When the schedule was released in the spring, it had been anticipated that the Steelers’ late-season run would be a challenge. “That’s the great part of it: We have the guys to do it,” Wilson said. “We have the mentality to do it. We have the edge to do it. We have the response to do it.” These Steelers have proven their worthiness as contenders. They are 5-0 against teams sitting in playoff positions. That means just as much as questionable defeats to the likes of the Indianapolis Colts (5-6), Dallas Cowboys (3-7) or Browns (3-8). Longtime captain Cameron Heyward said Thursday’s loss won’t affect the team’s focus or preparation. “If you’re not learning from your wins and you’re only learning from your losses, shame on you,” Heyward said. “You can be humbled in every game. You try to learn something in every game.” The same can be said for seasons. And as much as the collapses of 2009 or 2018 or, say, 2020 (when the 11-0 Steelers lost five of their final six) can trigger fear among fans that the Browns loss portends another late-season swoon, the Steelers under Tomlin also have more than a half-dozen cases in which they turned things around down the stretch. Then there’s the Steelers of 2011 and 2017, who were cruising by the time they reached Thanksgiving and kept riding that wave through the end of their regular seasons (finishing 12-4 and 13-3, respectively). “Any game, you’ve gotta have short-term memory,” outside linebacker Nick Herbig said. “Regardless of who it is, win or loss.” The Steelers vow that when they return to practice Tuesday that the discomforting loss in Cleveland will be well behind them. “I love this football team,” Wilson said. “(These are) the right guys, the right energy. This is the right response. We are disappointed, but we’re not discouraged. We’re not flinching in the midst of it. We’ll respond the right way.”

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday questioned whether the Tamil Nadu police were not even aware of the basic procedure of non-disclosure of the identity of the complainants in sexual assault cases. “How was the First Information Report (FIR) published online? Why was the identity of another person involved in the case [of sexual assault on the Anna University campus] not revealed? Suspicions of political pressure in this case are increasing. The case should be transferred to the CBI...,” he posted on social media. Leaders raise questions PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss urged the State government to suspend the officials who released the FIR that had the identity of the complainant. “Though two persons were involved in the case, only one of them has been arrested. Are the police attempting to protect the other accused and demoralise the complainant?..,” he asked. CPI (M) State secretary K. Balakrishnan condemned the police for publishing the FIR online. DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant, in a statement, questioned Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s silence in the case. The Chennai Press Club expressed shock over the disclosure of the identity of the complainant by a section of the media. It is morally wrong and legally offensive to disclose identities of women and children who file complaints of sexual assault, it said. However, Minister for Law S. Regupathy, at a press conference, said the State government had not revealed the identity of the complainant in the FIR. “The government is not attempting to silence the complainant. Having trust in this government, she came forward to lodge a complaint and the government took action.” Minister for Higher Education Govi Chezhiaan, speaking in Thanjavur, rebutted reports that claimed that the accused was a DMK member. Quantum Computing: The Global Power Struggle for Technological SupremacyFormer President Jimmy Carter, right, embraces his secretary of state, Edmund Muskie, during the 1985 dedication of the Muskie Archives at Bates College in Lewiston. Bates College photo Despite his Georgia roots, former President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday in his hometown in Georgia, had closer ties to Lewiston and Auburn than most would expect from a former peanut farmer. He visited the twin cities on a handful of occasions, speaking at least twice at Bates College and scrounging for votes in Auburn during his long-shot presidential campaign in 1975. At the Holiday Inn in Auburn that long-ago December, Carter told a small crowd the country was drifting “in the absence of leadership from the president” and called for someone in the White House who could “inspire the American people to reach for greatness.” At Bates that same day, Carter pledged to several hundred students and resident that he would “never tell a lie, never make a misleading statement, never betray your confidence and never avoid a controversial issue.” Rosalynn Carter, the former president’s wife who died last November, spent even more time in the area in the months leading up to the Maine presidential caucus in 1976, including a couple of overnight stays in Auburn with supporters of her husband and a tea at a Chamberlain Avenue home in Lewiston. Carter, largely unknown to most of the country, wound up winning more delegates in Maine than all the other Democratic contenders combined, providing him with a boost that helped him win the New Hampshire primary a few weeks later and then his party’s nomination in 1976. One of the people who met Carter on that trip, former state Rep. James Handy of Lewiston, told the oral history project at the Muskie Archives at Bates College that the former president “probably more influence on me than any other politician.” “His commitment to other people to me was what I wanted to do,” Handy said. “He really illustrated to me that you can be successful, and your success can be measured in what you do for others and putting other people before yourself.” Handy said that Carter’s commitment to human rights, both internationally and in his own country, exemplified his ethics and helped make him “very inspirational.” Carter defeated incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford in November 1976. In the final year of his one-term presidency, he appointed former U.S. Sen. Edmund Muskie of Maine to serve as his secretary of state, cementing a special tie between the president and the Pine Tree State. When Carter sought a second term, he spent a couple of evenings making phone calls to ordinary people across Maine who were working on his campaign. One of them, Cecilia Treworgy, who taught home economics at Lewiston High School at the time, picked up the phone one night in February 1980 to find Carter on the other end of the line. “I was so taken aback I couldn’t think of anything to say,” Treworgy recalled recently. But Carter lost his reelection bid to Republican Ronald Reagan that year. “I felt very sad when he didn’t win,” Treworgy said. She called him “a very decent man.” After his defeat, Carter began a new career as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and promoter of peace in troubled areas worldwide. Just days after Hurricane Gloria slammed New England in September 1985, Carter flew to Lewiston for the dedication of the Muskie Archives at Bates. A college professor, Carl Straub, said at the time: “There is more than the Appalachian Trail which binds Maine to Georgia. There is a common heritage which rises from the simple decency of our people: We share a sense of what is good and just and beautiful. “We share gratitude for the common leadership given us by Jimmy Carter. On this festive occasion when we honor a son of Maine and of Bates, we pause to thank this son of Georgia. “ “His journey has been one of human adventure,” Straub said as the college conferred an honorary doctorate on the former president. “When he reached his highest office, he did not forget the lessons from that journey, for they taught him what is important to the American people.” Carter and Muskie, a former governor from Rumford and a 1936 Bates graduate, were friends. Awarding Muskie the Medal of Freedom in 1981, Carter said he had admired Muskie “ever since I’ve been aware of his public service and been interested myself in going into the political arena.” Carter appreciated the Mainer’s “quiet sense of inner strength and demonstrated courage.” He said that Muskie “has never yielded to temptation to lower his own standards or the standards which make all public servants proud” and despite being “a loyal Democrat,” his service transcended party. In addition to Muskie, the former president also had close ties to another Bates graduate, civil rights leader Benjamin Mays, a leader in the class of 1920 who would later mentor Martin Luther King Jr. During his 1985 speech at Bates, Carter thanked the college “for making it possible for Dr. Benjamin Mays to overcome the handicaps of white supremacy and racism and to take his place among the prominent leaders of our nation and the world.” The address at Bates also touched on some of the recurrent themes of Carter’s public life, including his insistence a country should be measured by its commitment to human rights. “In order to be truly great, we must use our power for the enhancement of peace for ourselves and for others,” he said. “This includes forgoing belligerence and force wherever possible and relying wherever possible on diplomacy.” Comments are not available on this story. This article was originally published in August. Enjoy! The entirety of the trading card community — that is, people who collect, buy, and sell the Pokémon Trading Card game, sports cards, Magic: The Gathering, Disney, or literally any trading card game you can think of — has gradually become aware of what might be an existential threat to the entire concept of opening up a blind pack of trading cards. Over the past month or so, a series of events occurred across different corners of the trading card hobby which have snowballed into a panic, all stemming from one unlikely thing: CT scanners . Yes, computed tomography, like the kind of thing doctors typically use to see your insides, has now effectively been demonstrated on trading card packs and boxes to accurately show what’s inside without needing to open them. Not only that, but in the aftershock of the news, a business named Industrial Inspection + Consulting LLC has already come to market with an attempt to monetise CT scanning trading card boxes and packs, suggesting on its brand new website, “If some people have access to this technology, you should too.” First, A Loose Timeline of Events Back on June 24th, 2024, Instagram user Dtaoooooo uploaded what they alleged was a video of a CT scan displaying a box of officially licensed basketball cards, posted with the following caption: Today, panini’s NBA copyright is about to expire, I hereby disclose a secret that is clear in the blind box industry, so that consumers can see how to ”unbox without damage“ through CT scanner technology, merchants are unscrupulous offline to find logoman‘s speculative way without loss! #logoman @paniniamerica @psacard #logomancard The X-ray displayed what skilled hobbyists would relatively easily be able to identify as a “Logoman'' card floating inside of a sealed box. That’s an extremely rare, serialised type of trading card that features an NBA patch from a real player’s jersey, even the least valuable of these sell for hundreds, while the rarest sell for thousands. This Instagram claim raised plenty of eyebrows after it was circulated, but most of the conjecture uneasily concluded this was either fake, or hoped it was too impractical to be of much consequence. However, a few weeks later on July 16th, 2024, a YouTube channel called “Ahron Wayne's Strange Brain” posted an entirely unrelated vlog on the same topic titled “ Digitally Peeking Inside a Pack of Pokemon Cards ”. In this far more wholesome yet still astonishing video, Ahron Wayne details how his young career in science eventually led him to an eBay listing for a local pickup of two broken-down CT scanning machines, which in total cost him $1,500. After using his own technical expertise to fix the machines and initially using them for more typical endeavours, Wayne spends the video explaining an initial curiosity to test their limits before visually detailing his process of scanning 25-year-old vintage Pokémon packs. The result? The machine produced fuzzy yet unmistakable images of holographic hits from inside the packs — packs which still remain unopened. This video was released in earnest, but the reactions from trading card streamers (if the Youtube videos accompanied by shocked-faced-thumbnails totalling in the dozens are any indication) were cataclysmic . And it’s not hard to imagine why. What This Means For Magic , Pokémon , and More In short, nobody really knows what this means for the hobby for certain, but this is not entirely without precedent. Historically, within the Pokémon card game but also in others, re-sellers have been able to physically weigh vintage packs in order to identify packs with rarer holographic cards inside of them, with relatively repeatable consistency. But X-ray vision is an entirely new ballgame that would permanently alter the massive economy of vintage collectibles. Try to imagine the concept of “scanned” versus “unscanned” packs adding and subtracting value to sales listings, or how literally any sealed box of anything would fall suspect to having been pre-scanned for top hits. Yet just weeks ago, no one could fathom a use case where both industrial machinery and skilled machinist could be paired up for the explicit purpose of finding Charizards. But after someone showed they were able to do it shockingly effectively for a mere $1,500, an amount equal to many run-of-the-mill business expenses, many began to piece together not whether the technology to scan packs was possible or practical, but rather, how long this has already been going on for? The Company Who Wants To Scan Your Cards Finally, on June 26th, 2024, a company called Industrial Inspection + Consulting LLC posted a blog post titled “ NOW YOU CAN PIKACHU CARDS WITHOUT OPENING THE BOX ”. This post came complete with high-resolution video and detailed imagery of their professional scanning machines scanning shrink-wrapped boxes of Pokémon cards, as well as scanning single cards sandwiched between other cards. From that, the company showed off how it was able to produce strikingly detailed scans of individual cards inside of unopened merchandise, as well as those blocked by other cards. In response to the tidal wave of reaction within the card community, the company quickly pivoted to produce an e-commerce page, complete with pricing tiers for scanning services wherein you can physically mail unopened packs or boxes of cards in exchange for digital CT scans of your items. Nintendo Life reached out to Industrial Inspection + Consulting LLC to ask more questions about how their business intends to operate, as well as their opinions on the CT scan phenomenon in general. [ Editor’s Note: Nintendo Life has confirmed the subject’s identity, but has granted their spokesperson anonymity on the basis of continued threats to their workers. While it is not our preference to publish anonymous comments, we ultimately felt it is still valuable to let readers discern the proposed overall viewpoints of the company for themselves.] Nintendo Life [Alan Lopez]: What does your company do, specifically? And what services do you sell? Industrial Inspection & Consulting is an engineering support company offering a variety of niche inspection services, including non-destructive testing for X-ray, CT Scanning, 3D Scanning, Reverse Engineering, Metrology, Dye Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, Ultrasonics, and consulting and oversight. Your website postures Industrial Inspection + Consulting LLC as a response to an unchecked trend of CT scanning trading card packs. Your website reads : First, we made public what’s been happening in secret. Now we are bringing x-ray vision to the masses. If you haven’t heard, we are able to identify holographic cards inside unopened card packs. [...] If some people have access to this technology, you should too. It’s what’s fair and the next logical step. How do we know? Because of the explosion of interest we’ve received. Between calls from reporters, endless requests to scan packs and kits from collectors, investors, card stores, and auction houses, and a 28,000% spike in traffic to our website, the demand is clear. That’s why we’ve worked around the clock to develop a reliable method and affordable cost per pack for CT scanning. Pandora’s box is open – jump in. To your knowledge, what specifically has been happening in the trading card industry, and for how long? And how did you find out? There is ample evidence, with more being released at a fast pace, that this has been occurring in secret for a long time. From video-based evidence of people attempting it for years, to anecdotes in community comment sections about medical systems being used, it’s been happening likely as long as the technology has been available. We stumbled upon this [trend] by accident after producing a standard case study on our website. It went relatively viral due to other parties’ reactions who were working on [CT scanning trading cards] in secret, [and then] also releasing their findings. So do you believe CT scanning is a positive development for the world of collectibles? And why or why not? We believe CT scanning is an inevitable development. The technology is not going away, and people know what it can do. To argue if it is positive or negative does not matter because interested parties will find a way to use it regardless of public opinion. How prevalent do you think CT scanning is in the collectibles economy? We do not have data for this. Roughly how many CT companies/services for collectibles exist today? Or rather, what does the privatisation landscape of this technology look like right now? We are the only company offering CT scanning for collectibles to date. Do you know if there are any safety concerns with CT scanning items, not just for you, but specifically for anyone who might see this and attempt to do this on their own? We are certified non-destructive testing experts with years of experience handling our equipment and complex projects. We cannot speak to the safety of someone trying this on their own. That is dependent on their expertise and the equipment they use. As for safety to the general public, X-Rays are non-destructive to inorganic material and they pass harmlessly through objects like this without altering molecular structure. Once exposure is complete, there is no residual radioactivity or damage. It's clear that by monetising the issue, your solution appears to be regulation and normalization of the technology. However, one of the biggest challenges to an approach between a private third party and a person with unopened packs is trust ; how does a third-party company instil trust in a potential customer that they would both a) receive an accurate assessment and b) actually get back the unopened item that they sent in? Some readers have expressed serious doubts that if their packs had valuable cards in them, that they would actually receive them back. Product safety is left up to the consumer. When the chain of custody is considered, as soon as that product leaves the user, they are no longer aware of their product. The product must be sealed in tamper-proof packaging . If it is not, the client is then using our services at their own risk with our reputation as collateral. There are endless and customisable product security solutions available online. And how accurate do you believe the scans to be? Is there a mathematical percentage? From an accuracy and repeatability standpoint, there is an uncertainty of about 9UM (micrometres) for these scans. From a practical, imaging standpoint, and our ability to witness card characteristics, that is entirely dependent on the type of card and the care the operator uses to evaluate the data. For example, a Pokémon reverse holographic card can be seen in a scan, but the only way to identify the particular card would be to read the moveset, or by other special markings. There is no character silhouette [in this instance]. Does this mean the scan is inaccurate? No, it means we captured the data available for that type of card. We offer no guarantees beyond what has been demonstrated on our website. [However], we have received endless requests for products we are unfamiliar with. We will offer our best effort to produce data for these products. Do you believe that this technology will ultimately become as standard as weighing packs? This technology will not replace weighing because weighing is cheap, fast, and able to be performed by anybody. So then, exploring that barrier to entry, are all CT scan machines similarly effective, or is there variance in the technology? What is the current price point of owning and operating one of these machines? Not all systems are equal; there are low-cost-to-entry systems with results to match (higher noise, diminished resolution, slower processing.) Our systems cost high 6-7 figures each, but with results to match those figures. Finally, as of this interview, there has been no comment from the makers of these cards. But do you believe that there will be actions taken by Wizards of the Coast, Pokémon Int., Topps, etc, in response to you, or this phenomenon? We do not know if manufacturers will respond. This interview has been very lightly edited for clarity. Nintendo Life has also reached out to The Pokémon Company International, Topps, and Wizards of the Coast, but they did not respond for comment prior to publication. We will update this story if they provide any future comment.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — With tears occasionally welling in his eyes, Daniel Jones disagreed on Thursday with the New York Giants' decision to bench him earlier this week and perhaps end his five-plus tenure as the team's quarterback. The 27-year-old Jones said he gave the team everything he had after being taken sixth overall in the 2019 draft and he believes he still has a future in the NFL. He held himself accountable for the Giants making the playoffs once in his tenure as the starter. The Duke product took over early in his rookie season when then-coach Pat Shurmur benched two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, who was near the end of his career. Coach Brian Daboll benched Jones on Monday after the Giants (2-8) returned to practice following a bye week and 20-17 overtime loss to Carolina in Germany. Tommy DeVito will start Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with Daboll hoping he can spark the team. “Definitely not happy about it," said Jones, who read a 90-second statement before taking questions from reporters. “Yeah, not what you want to hear. So, yeah, all those emotions you have. But at the end of the day, this is football. We’re in a business where your expected to get results and we weren’t doing it.” Wearing his no-contact red jersey with a faded No. 8, Jones indicated the Giants offered him the opportunity to walk away from the team with seven games left in the season. He said he is considering it, but he also wanted to stay and help DeVito get ready this week. It is unlikely the Giants are going to let him play again. He has two years left on a four-year, $160 million contract. Next season includes a $23 million guarantee that will kick in if he is hurt and is not ready to start the 2025 season. Since being benched, Jones is barely getting any snaps, with most of them being taken by DeVito and backup Drew Lock. “I got the injury guarantee," Jones said of his lack of work. Asked if he would have waived the guarantee, Jones said general manager Joe Schoen and his agent, Brian Murphy, discussed the issue but that was it. Jones spoke for almost 11 minutes. He got emotional when told receiver Darius Slayton and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence both referred to him as still the best quarterback on the team. All three were drafted in 2019. Jones called the Giants a first-class organization, cherished the relationships he has and thanked his teammates, coaches and staff. “There have been some great times. But of course, we all wish there had been more of those,” Jones said. “I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins. No one wanted to win more games worse than me. I gave everything I had on the field and in my preparation.” Jones called the 2024 season disappointing and took responsibility. “The idea to change something happens, and I understand. I love the game,” Jones said. “I love being part of a team. I’m excited for the next opportunity. I know that there’s a lot of good football in front of me.” AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nflWASHINGTON — Special counsel Jack Smith moved to abandon two criminal cases against Donald Trump on Monday, acknowledging that Trump’s return to the White House will preclude attempts to federally prosecute him for retaining classified documents or trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat. The decision was inevitable, since longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. Yet it was still a momentous finale to an unprecedented chapter in political and law enforcement history, as federal officials attempted to hold a former president accountable while he ran for another term. In court filings, Smith’s team emphasized that the move to abandon their prosecutions was not a reflection of the merit of the cases but a recognition of the legal shield that surrounds any commander in chief. “That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind,” the prosecutors wrote in one of their filings. Smith’s team said it left intact charges against two co-defendants in the classified documents case — Trump valet Walt Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira. The election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing Trump as he tried to reclaim the White House. He was indicted for plotting to overturn his defeat to Joe Biden in 2020, an effort that climaxed with his supporters’ violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The separate case involving classified documents was widely seen as legally clear cut, especially because the conduct in question occurred after Trump left the White House and lost the powers of the presidency. Court upholds red state's ban on trans surgeries, treatments for minorsAppoints Current Dana Director R. Bruce McDonald as Chairman and CEO Announces Plan to Sell Off-Highway Business Initiates $200 Million Cost Reduction Plan Confirms 2024 Full-Year Guidance Ranges for Sales, Adjusted EBITDA and Free Cash Flow MAUMEE, Ohio , Nov. 25, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Dana Incorporated (NYSE: DAN) today announced the appointment of R. Bruce McDonald , a member of the Dana Board of Directors, as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Mr. McDonald's appointment follows the retirement of James Kamsickas as Chief Executive Officer and his departure from the Board. Mr. Kamsickas will remain as an advisor to the Company through March 2025 to support the transition. The Board has retained a leading executive search firm to identify the Company's next permanent CEO. Keith Wandell , Dana's Lead Independent Director, said, "Jim is an exceptional leader with more than 18 years as a CEO in the industry. He led Dana through one of the industry's most challenging periods while successfully building a high-performance culture, enabling a world-class manufacturing company and assembling a portfolio of leading products and technologies. The Board and Jim agreed that now is the right time to transition the leadership of Dana, and we thank Jim for his many contributions over his nine years leading the Company and wish him all the best." Mr. Kamsickas said, "I am proud of the work the Dana team has done over the past decade to grow revenues and successfully enhance the technology to serve all mobility markets no matter what type of propulsion they may use. It has been an honor to lead this talented global team during that time and I am confident the Company is well positioned for the future." Mr. Wandell continued, "We continue to have confidence in the long-term opportunity in the mobility industry, however it is undergoing a significant transformation, including protracted cost pressures and demand uncertainty. To address these challenges and deliver more value to customers and shareholders, Dana is taking action to streamline the business, unlock the value of its Off-Highway business and further reduce costs. Bruce is an experienced public company CEO in our industry with significant M&A expertise, and we are confident that he is the right person to oversee this transformation while the Board conducts a search for a permanent successor." Plan to Sell Off-Highway Business Dana today also announced it has engaged financial advisors Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC and Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC to sell its Off-Highway business, which the Board believes will unlock substantial value for shareholders. The Off-Highway business provides drive and motion systems for heavy-duty vehicles in markets such as agriculture, materials handling, mining, construction and forestry. A sale will position Dana with a streamlined go-to-market approach focused on serving its light and commercial vehicle customers, with traditional and electrified products that are largely shared across the remaining portfolio. Proceeds from a potential sale will enable Dana to strengthen its balance sheet through substantially reduced leverage, and to return capital to shareholders. While the Company and its advisors believe there is strong interest in the Off-Highway business, there can be no assurance that the sale process for Off-Highway will result in a transaction. There is no timeframe for the conclusion of the process, and the Company does not intend to comment further regarding this matter unless and until further disclosure is determined to be appropriate. Cost Reduction Actions While Dana continues to improve its profitability in a challenging operating environment, the Company announced further actions to support sustained long-term profitability and enhanced cash flow generation. This includes substantial reductions in selling, general & administrative costs across all the Company's businesses and engineering expenses to match current industry dynamics, including the ongoing delay in the adoption of electric vehicles. The Company expects to deliver annualized savings of approximately $200 million by 2026. Furthermore, the Company plans to reduce capital spending to reflect the revised market demand for electric vehicles. Bruce McDonald , Chief Executive Officer said, "Dana is committed to a strategy that accelerates value creation and has taken action to flex its cost structure and generate efficiencies by leveraging its core strengths through current market conditions. It is clear that further actions are needed, and I am confident that the new incremental cost reductions, paired with the benefits of a potential Off-Highway sale, will enhance shareholder value. Following the Off-Highway business sale, we believe Dana will have an adjusted EBITDA margin and free cash flow margin in excess of current levels." Mr. McDonald continued, "Dana is differentiated by leading technology innovation and a track record of continuous improvement. My conviction in our businesses, the team and the opportunities to capitalize on the EV transition over the long term remain strong. I look forward to stepping into my new role as CEO at such an important time for Dana and will work diligently alongside the Board and management team to deliver on these actions and drive value for Dana shareholders." Google does. Google released its annual “Year in Search” on Tuesday, rounding up the top trending queries entered into its namesake search engine in 2024. The results show terms that saw the highest spike in traffic compared to last year — ranging from key news events, notably global elections, to the most popular songs, athletes and unforgettable pop-culture moments that people looked up worldwide. Sports — particularly soccer and cricket — dominated Google's overall trending searches in 2024. Copa América topped those search trends globally, followed by the UEFA European Championship and ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, the U.S. election led news-specific searches worldwide. Queries about excessive heat and this year's Olympic Games followed. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump topped searches in Google's people category this year — followed by Catherine, Princess of Wales, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who also led athlete-specific searches. Meanwhile, the late Liam Payne, Toby Keith and O.J. Simpson led search trends among notable individuals who died in 2024. In the world of entertainment, Disney and Pixar's “Inside Out 2” was the top trending movie of the year, while Netflix's “Baby Reindeer” led TV show trends. And Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” dominated song trends. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Queries for the Olympic village's chocolate muffin, made famous by Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen over the summer games, led Google's global recipe trends this year. The New York Times' “Connections” puzzle topped game searches. And in the U.S., country-specific data shows, many people asked Google about online trends like the word “demure” and “ mob wife aesthetic.” You can find more country-specific lists, and trends from years past, through Google’s “Year in Search” data published online. The California company said it collected 2024 search results from Jan. 1 through Nov. 23 of this year. Google isn't the only one to publish an annual recap or top trends as 2024 draws to a close. Spotify Wrapped, for example, as well as Collins Dictionary and Merriam-Webster’s words of the year, have offered additional reflections for 2024.

Michael Cheika's Leicester have snatched a thrilling 34-34 draw with Harlequins at Twickenham in England's Premiership Rugby. Veteran England prop Dan Cole, 37, scored in the 79th minute of Saturday's match when he placed the ball on the line as part of a forward-led assault on the whitewash by Leicester with Springboks star Handre Pollard nailing a tricky conversion. It is the third time in three meetings that the rivals have drawn in Harlequins' annual 'Big Game' fixture at Twickenham, which has now been running for 16 years. Cole had come on as a substitute for Leicester, who also have five wins and three losses and sit fifth, six points above Harlequins but 11 behind leaders Bath. "Dan's Leicester through and through. He's still as passionate as ever," former Wallabies coach Cheika said. "He's ripping into the guys at training. He could easily be saying 'I've done my bit, someone else should be taking over here'. But he's still investing so much into the club and the team. "It takes a while to get to know him but I've started to get to know him better and I'm really appreciating the effort he's making." Leicester played with greater cohesion but a self-destructive streak undermined their evening with first-half mistakes gifting their rivals two tries and providing England five eighth Marcus Smith with two easy shots at goal. Once Pollard's conversion had sailed over via the right upright there were still a few seconds remaining for Leicester to stage one final attack in search of the win, but halfback Ben Youngs opted to kick the ball into touch and take the draw. Cheika backed the decision. "It's usually my go to go for the win but to be honest we hadn't looked like making a break from long range all game," Cheika said. "And we didn't nail our opportunities from short range as well and we created a heap of them. "It felt like we got through that game on fight. "We've got three points and in the long game of the season, that was a well made decision.' - with AAP

UConn announced a two-year contract extension for head football coach Jim Mora on Saturday, just before the team took the field for the Fenway Bowl against North Carolina. Mora’s contract extension will run through 2028 and will pay him $10 million through the remaining four years, with the opportunity to earn more in incentives. The 63-year-old coach is set to make $1.7 million next season, $1.9 million in 2026 and $2.3 and $2.4 million in 2027 and 2028, respectively. UConn then went out and thrashed North Carolina, 27-14, in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. “I am forever grateful. I’m grateful to (athletic director) David (Benedict) and (school president) Radenka (Maric) and the Board of Trustees, but this is about what the (UConn players) did today,” Mora said when asked about the extension in the postgame press conference. In a statement released by UConn ahead of the game, Mora said: “I’d like to thank David Benedict, Radenka Maric and the University of Connecticut leadership for their trust in me and their commitment to our football program. When I first got here, I talked about where we wanted this program to go and we have shown great progress but we still have plenty of work to do. The commitment and dedication from the university and the athletic department has me excited about the future for our football team.” “Three years ago, I tasked Jim Mora with the challenge of leading our football team back to success and through his experience, energy and leadership he has done just that,” UConn athletic director David Benedict said in a statement. “He has taken our program to post season bowl games twice and just guided our team to one of the best seasons in UConn football history, building a momentum to keep this program moving forward. I look forward to his leadership of our football team in the years ahead.” Mora is coming off one of the most successful seasons in UConn football history, having led the team to an 8-4 record and an appearance in the Fenway Bowl. It’s the Huskies’ second bowl appearance in three years. UConn’s eight wins is the most for the program since 2010, and the Huskies had their first winning season since that year, too. A win Saturday would give UConn nine wins for just the third time in program history, with the last two such seasons coming in 2003 and 2007. UConn quarterbacks coach Brad Robbins is heading to Tulsa as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, according to a report from CBS Sports. Robbins was part of a coaching staff that helped the offense produce its most prolific attack since the 2009 season and fifth-most in program history (32.3 points per game). Robbins worked at FCS Tennessee Tech and Division II North Greenville before joining Jim Mora’s staff in spring 2023. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

For the second straight Major League Baseball offseason, a norm-shattering contract has been the talk of the winter , with Juan Soto agreeing with the New York Mets on a $765 million, 15-year deal that's the richest in baseball history. It comes almost exactly one year after the Los Angeles Dodgers forked out a princely sum of $700 million on a 10-year, heavily deferred deal for two-way Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani. They are believed to be the two richest contracts in pro sports history. The way it's going, a contract approaching $1 billion doesn't seem out of the question. But several factors are working against it — at least in the near future. There's reason to believe the megadeals for Ohtani and Soto are unicorns in the baseball world. Both players are uniquely talented, surely, but both also had unusual circumstances propelling their value into the stratosphere. Ohtani is the greatest two-way player in baseball history, capable of improving any team on both sides of the ball. He's also the rare baseball player who has true international appeal . His every move ( like his unexpected marriage announcement ) is followed closely in his native Japan, adding another 125 million potential fans who buy merchandise, watch him play and help fill the Dodgers' coffers. Then there's Soto — a four-time All-Star and on-base machine who won a World Series with the Washington Nationals in 2019. The X-factor for him is he became a free agent at the prime age of 26, which is extremely hard to do under current MLB rules. Players have to be in the big leagues for six years before testing free agency. The precocious Soto debuted at 19 with the Nats, making him part of a rare group of players who reached the highest level of professional baseball as a teenager. That accelerated his free agency timeline. It's rare for players to debut that young, and rarer still for them to develop into stars and test the open market the first chance they get. Two recent examples are Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, who both reached free agency in 2019. Machado signed a free-agent record $300 million contract with San Diego, and Harper overtook him days later with a $330 million contract to join the Phillies. Most players debut in the big leagues from ages 22 to 26, which means free agency comes in their late 20s or early 30s. A typical example is Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, who is one of this generation's great players but didn't hit the market until he was 30. Judge played three seasons of college baseball for Fresno State before getting drafted by the Yankees in 2013 at age 21 — already two years older than Soto was when he made his MLB debut. It took a few years for the budding superstar to reach the majors, and he was 25 when he had his breakout season in 2018, smashing 52 homers to earn AL Rookie of the Year honors. By the time he reached free agency after the 2022 season, he had already passed age 30. It's a major factor that led to him signing a $360 million, nine-year deal with the Yankees, which seems downright reasonable these days after the Ohtani and Soto deals. Two major trends are colliding that will make it harder for guys like Soto to hit free agency in their mid 20s. First, MLB teams have been more likely in recent years to take college players early in the draft, betting on more experienced talents. Just 10 high school players were drafted among the top 30 picks in the 2024 draft . Second, teams are more eager to lock up young, premium talent on long-term deals very early in their careers, well before they hit free agency. Sometimes before they even reach the majors. Since Soto, just two players have debuted in MLB before their 20th birthday — Elvis Luciano and Junior Caminero. Luciano hasn't been back to the majors since his 2019 cup of coffee. Caminero is now 21 and has only played in 50 big league games. Among those that debuted at 20: Fernando Tatis Jr. signed a $340 million, 14-year deal with San Diego in 2021, years before reaching the open market. Milwaukee's Jackson Chourio got an $82 million, eight-year deal before even reaching the big leagues. Young stars Corbin Carroll ($111 million, eight years with Arizona), Bobby Witt Jr. ($288 million, 11 years with Kansas City) and Julio Rodriguez ($209.3 million, 12 years with Seattle) also got massive guarantees early in their 20s to forgo an early free agency. The exception and wild card: Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will be a 26-year-old free agent next offseason. Guerrero hasn't been as consistent in his young career as Soto, but a standout 2025 season could position him to threaten Soto's deal. More likely is that the player to pass Soto isn't in the majors yet — and might not even be in pro baseball. When 25-year-old Alex Rodriguez signed his record $252 million, 10-year deal with Texas in 2001, it took over a decade for another player to match that total, when Albert Pujols got $240 million over 10 years from the Angels in 2012. For many players, passing up life-changing money in their early or mid 20s is too enticing, even if it means that they might not maximize their value on the free agent market later in their careers. Soto was determined to test the market. He famously turned down a $440 million, 15-year offer to stay with the Washington Nationals in 2022, betting that he could make even more as a free agent. Not many players would turn down that kind of cash. Then again, that's what makes Soto so unique. And it's also why his $765 million deal could be the industry standard for some time. The German Foreign Ministry, along with senior diplomats from France and the UK, issued a coordinated statement on X (formerly known as Twitter). They confirmed that all parties agreed to resume the talks in the near future. In their statement, the European troika representatives noted: "The political directors of the UK, France, and Germany met with their Iranian counterpart, Kazem Gharibabadi, in Geneva to discuss Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, bilateral relations, and the regional situation. We agreed to continue diplomatic discussions in the near future." Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, also commented on the outcome of the talks on Friday. He described the meeting as another constructive round of dialogue with European officials. "We engaged in discussions with the political directors of France, Germany, and the UK," Gharibabadi said, adding, "The talks covered the latest bilateral, regional, and international developments, with a particular emphasis on nuclear issues and the potential lifting of sanctions."* He underscored Iran’s commitment to dialogue and its determination to safeguard its national interests. "We are firmly dedicated to pursuing the rights and interests of the Iranian people. Dialogue and engagement remain our preferred path, and it was agreed that these diplomatic efforts will continue in the near future," he stated. Relations between Tehran and Europe faced a significant setback when an anti-Iran resolution, drafted by the E3, was approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors. The resolution criticizes Iran for “insufficient cooperation” with the IAEA under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), while failing to address the West’s full abandonment of the agreement.STATE COLLEGE – Another game, another couple of records for Penn State star tight end Tyler Warren. Ousted Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is leaving the company with millionsA melee broke out at midfield of Ohio Stadium after Michigan upset No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday. After the Wolverines' fourth straight win in the series, players converged at the block "O" to plant its flag. The Ohio State players were in the south end zone singing their alma mater in front of the student section. When the Buckeyes saw the Wolverines' flag, they rushed toward the 50-yard line. Social media posts showed Michigan offensive lineman Raheem Anderson carrying the flag on a long pole to midfield, where the Wolverines were met by dozens of Ohio State players and fights broke out. Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer was seen ripping the flag off the pole and taking the flag as he scuffled with several people trying to recover the flag. A statement from the Ohio State Police Department read: "Following the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in breaking up an on-field altercation. During the scuffle, multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray. OSUPD is the lead agency for games and will continue to investigate." Michigan running back Kalel Mullings on FOX said: "For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game. It's bad for the sport, bad for college football. At the end of the day, some people got to learn how to lose, man. "You can't be fighting and stuff just because you lost the game. We had 60 minutes and four quarters to do all that fighting. Now people want to talk and fight. That's wrong. It's bad for the game. Classless, in my opinion. People got to be better." Once order was restored, officers cordoned the 50-yard line, using bicycles as barriers. Ohio State coach Ryan Day in his postgame press conference said he wasn't sure what happened. "I don't know all the details of it. But I know that these guys are looking to put a flag on our field and our guys weren't going to let that happen," he said. "I'll find out exactly what happened, but this is our field and certainly we're embarrassed at the fact we lost the game, but there's some prideful guys on our team that weren't just going to let that happen." The Big Ten has not yet released a statement on the incident. --Field Level Media

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Kaylene Smikle scored 16 points and made a couple key baskets down the stretch to help No. 10 Maryland hold off George Mason 66-56 in a matchup of unbeatens Saturday at the Navy Classic. The Terrapins (7-0) led by just two when Smikle stole the ball and made a layup while being fouled. The free throw pushed the lead to 58-53. Then a putback by Smikle put Maryland up by seven. The Terps won despite shooting 13 of 26 on free throws. George Mason (6-1) trailed by 10 at halftime before outscoring Maryland 18-7 in the third quarter. The Patriots' final lead was 49-48 in the fourth after a jumper by Kennedy Harris. Harris led George Mason with 26 points. Maryland is off to its best start since winning its first 12 games in 2018-19. George Mason: The Patriots have lost all nine meetings with Maryland, but it's been more competitive of late. The Terps won 86-77 last year, and this game was more competitive than the final score suggested. Maryland: After a down season by their standards, the Terps are off to a nice start, but the free-throw problems in this game nearly cost them. With the score 55-53, George Mason had a chance to tie, but the Patriots never really recovered after Smikle swiped the ball from Harris and went the other way for a three-point play with 3:08 remaining. Although Maryland was awful at the line, at least the Terps got there. George Mason was only 3 of 8 from the stripe, and the Terps held the Patriots to 32% shooting from the field. Lee was diagnosed with a degenerative brain disease in October, before further testing revealed that he had ALS earlier this month. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive and fatal neurological disorder that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, according to the Mayo Clinic . Lee starred in over 40 episodes of “Workaholics,” which aired for seven seasons on Comedy Central from 2011 to 2017. The workplace sitcom follows three friends from California who work together as telemarketers and are labeled the “Workaholics.” Some of the “Workaholics” cast members paid tribute to Lee on social media after his death. “Rest in peace Waymond Lee. I am gutted. He was such a kind man,” wrote Adam DeVine , who co-created the show and played Adam DeMamp. “My deepest condolences go out to his wife Diane and the rest of his family,” DeVine’s Instagram tribute to Lee continued. “He was always down to do whatever insane thing we wrote for him on Workaholics. He was always game. A true professional.” DeVine, 41, added, “Even though I haven’t seen him since the workaholics days this is hitting me like a brick to the face. When I think of our show I think of Waymond. The older I get the more I realize what a special time that was. You will be missed Way Way!” Blake Anderson, who also co-created the series and played Blake Henderson, remembered Lee in his own tribute. ‘This KING! Waymond Lee. Rest in peace my friend,” Anderson, 40, began. “I just don’t even know where to begin. The best explanation that comes to mind is in the Marvel multiverse movies when they explain the idea of “anchor beings” Waymond was the workaholics anchor being. The workaholics universe just simply doesn’t exist without him.” “He was there from even before the beginning. He was always blown away and so appreciative of all the love Workaholics fans showed him,” Anderson went on. “I’m very grateful I randomly ran into him on set in 2022 and gave him a big old hug. Such a peaceful and warm guy. He really made my heart smile.” “Waymond was a great dude. All my love goes out to his family and friends,” Anderson added. Another tribute came from “Workaholics” co-creator and star Anders Holm. “Waymond Lee was a great guy,” Holm, 43, wrote. “Even though he never spoke on the show, he was always chatting people up on set. Super positive. Goofy and fun, but would drop some real elder wisdom on us. Loved seeing him get love from the fans and always enjoyed seeing him pop up in other shows and movies.” “The camera loved that guy. He just had a real watchable look and unique comic timing that was all Waymond,” Holm continued, before bringing attention toward Lee’s “real comedy partner,” his wife, Diane. “They were a dynamic duo on set, like a legit sitcom couple,” Holm said. “Sending love to Diane and the rest of Waymond’s family. Everybody loved Waymond. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻❤️❤️❤️.” In addition to his role in “Workaholics,” Lee made uncredited appearances in “Grey’s Anatomy,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Superstore,” “Dexter, ” “The Cleaning Lady,” “How I Met Your Mother” and “Veep.”

At AEW All Out, the former best friends clashed for the Women’s Championship. Mariah May defeated Toni Storm to claim the AEW Women’s Championship, ending Storm’s impressive 281-day reign. After her shocking loss, Storm stepped away from AEW but made a surprise return at AEW Dynamite: Winter is Coming on 11th December. Fans were excited to see “Timeless” Toni Storm back. However, Storm surprised everyone by adopting her old Rockstar persona. This version of Storm’s character seems unaware of her AEW history and believes she is making her debut in promotion. Storm’s former friend and the current AEW Women’s Champion, Mariah May, reacted to Storm’s transformation, stating she “destroyed her” after taking the title. AEW Women’s Champion Mariah May on Toni Storm’s dramatic new persona AEW Women’s Champion Mariah May recently appeared on the Niko Knows Best podcast and discussed her impact on the women’s division. She emphasized her dominance in AEW, pointing out how she dethroned Toni Storm. She , “Look at what I did to Toni Storm. Toni Storm was the face of our division, she would honestly be the face of the company if it wasn’t for me, and what I did to her, I destroyed her.” May explained that she had always admired Toni Storm but she also made it clear that she used Storm to her advantage. She stated, “I have no relationship with Toni Storm. Mina [Shirakawa], I love, we’re still friends, I love Mina, I gave her a chance, she couldn’t get the job done which I’m not surprised. But Toni is not my friend, she’s never been my friend, and she never will be my friend.” This weekend at AEW Worlds End, Mariah May will defend her Women’s Championship against Thunder Rosa in a Tijuana Street Fight. While May continues to boast about her actions against Storm, it seems only a matter of time before the two former best friends cross paths once again. Ojas is a pro-wrestling writer at ComingSoon. The rally concluded in a human chain. Participants raised slogans against the “growing attacks on girls, students and women”. They said that the Indian Constitution provides political, economic and social rights to all citizens. It also enables citizens to wage struggles to achieve their rights. Though there were several laws for the protection of the rights of women, children and minorities, they were not being properly implemented by the government, they said. This was contributing to an increase in crimes against students and sexual harassment of single women. Youngsters were destroying their future by getting addicted to drugs. They alleged that the governments were promoting social evils like consumption of alcohol with an eye on revenue, ignoring the future of youngsters. They called for a strong civil society to promote human rights and to make the governments accountable. “Our rights are our future,” they said and called upon students, youths, women and all citizens to strive for upholding rights. Published - December 11, 2024 04:40 am IST Copy link Email Facebook Twitter Telegram LinkedIn WhatsApp RedditLOS ANGELES (AP) — Democrats and Republicans agreed on at least one thing before November’s election: California would play a central role in determining control of the U.S. House. Indeed it did. Democrat Adam Gray's come-from-behind victory over Republican Rep. John Duarte in a Central Valley farm-belt district Tuesday — the final House contest decided this year — gave Democrats their third pick-up of a GOP-held seat in the state, a small victory in a tough year for Democrats nationally. While Democratic wins narrowed the gap in the House, Republicans held their ground in two other toss-up contests that helped the GOP defend its fragile majority in Washington. Republicans won 220 House seats this election cycle , with Democrats holding 215 seats. Despite falling short of a majority, Democrats stressed that the party will gain seats next year, leaving the chamber even more closely divided. “Netting three seats was a very big deal,” Rep. Pete Aguilar, the third-ranking Democrat in the chamber, who lives in Redlands, east of Los Angeles, said in Washington. Democratic enthusiasm was tempered, however, by turnout figures that lagged the 2020 presidential election in the heavily Democratic state, even with Kamala Harris leading the Democratic ticket in her home state. Also, Republicans made incremental gains in the state Legislature. Voters overwhelmingly endorsed a ballot proposal that makes shoplifting a felony for repeat offenders again and increases penalties for some drug charges amid frustration over retail crimes, a proposal opposed by some Democrats. The election showed Democrats will need to pay closer attention to issues like crime and the cost of living, even in a state where the party holds every statewide office and dominates the Legislature and congressional delegation, Claremont McKenna College political scientist Jack Pitney said. In the House, Democrats “were hoping that California would push them over the top to gain a majority. But their gains elsewhere were not strong enough,” Pitney added, pointing to GOP wins in North Carolina. Gray won by a margin of less than 200 votes, with election officials reporting Tuesday all ballots had been counted. Duarte captured the seat in 2022 when he defeated Gray by one of the closest margins in the country, 564 votes. He was often listed among the most vulnerable House Republicans given that narrow margin of victory in a district with a Democratic tilt — about 11 points over registered Republicans. Gray said in a statement: “We always knew that this race would be as close as they come, and we’re expecting a photo finish this year, too.” In other Democratic House gains, first-time candidate Derek Tran ousted Republican Rep. Michelle Steel in a Southern California district anchored in Orange County, while Democrat George Whitesides toppled Republican Rep. Mike Garcia is a district north of Los Angeles. In a district east of Los Angeles, Republican Rep. Ken Calvert again held off Democrat Will Rollins in a repeat of their 2022 contest. And Republican Rep. David Valadao kept his grip on a farm-belt seat, despite its heavy Democratic registration edge. The outcome will leave Republicans with nine of the state's 52 U.S. House seats next year. Although California is often seen as a liberal monolith, a string of House districts has proved volatile in recent elections, spotlighting their importance to both parties. Democrats snatched seven seats from Republicans in 2018, then Republicans seized four from Democrats in 2020. In the 2022 elections, Republicans gained one seat, from 11 to 12, while Democrats dropped to 40 seats from 42, after California lost a House seat in reapportionment after the 2020 census. Overall, the state dropped to 52 districts from 53. The state played a pivotal role in securing the gavel for Republicans in 2022 and installing Rep. Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield as speaker .

Stock market today: Wall Street gains ground as it notches a winning week and another Dow recordTickets for a Kings of Leon gig in Cardiff have gone on presale, but a licensing application to allow tens of thousands more to watch it at a popular park still hasn't been approved. Plans were recently announced for Blackweir Fields to be used for music events from next summer. DEPOT Live has partnered with Cuffe and Taylor for the Blackweir Live event which will feature a Kings of Leon gig on June 29, 2025. Blackweir Fields is well used for sports and leisure, particularly cricket. Bute Park is currently covered by a licence that allows for events with a capacity of 25,000 people. However, the intention is for Blackweir Live events to have a capacity of 35,000. A new licence from the local authority would be needed for this. A council spokesperson said: “Live music is central to our vision for Cardiff and the Blackweir Live events will help cement Cardiff’s status as a must-play destination for major artists, delivering significant economic benefits for the city, as well as providing the council with vital income to help us continue promoting the city as a music destination, and to invest in our parks." For more Cardiff stories, sign up to our newsletter here . “Blackweir Fields is an established events space and has successfully hosted large-scale events, including activities as part of the Olympics and the Eisteddfod in the past. The site is already covered by the current Bute Park licence which allows for a wide range of events with a capacity of up to 25,000 people and has previously seen thousands of people enjoy music events, such as the X Music Festival and KissStory, in the park. “Due to the increased capacity proposed for the Blackweir Live events a new licence application is required. Once this application has been made, it will be advertised to the public in line with all legal requirements. Key stakeholders in the park, including businesses, sports clubs and the Friends of Bute Park have already been made fully aware of the proposed events. “Blackweir Live is a privately managed event and decisions around the timing of ticket sales are a matter for the event promoter, however it is common practice across the music industry for ticket sales to begin before licencing arrangements have been finalised." Cuffe and Taylor and Cardiff-based DEPOT Live have presented a number of live music events at Cardiff Castle over the past two years. The partnership's intention is to have Blackweir Live debut in 2025 with four headline gigs. Kings of Leon tickets went on presale on Wednesday, December 4. The majority of Bute Park will still be accessible when there is a Blackweir Live gig on, but public access to Blackweir Fields will be restricted during the event and for a limited period either side of it to allow for everything to be set up and taken down. Cardiff Council said special care was being taken to protect the cricket squares on Blackweir Fields from damage. It added that the technology used at Blackweir would be the same as used when high profile cricket grounds such as Old Trafford hosted events.Chicago mayor’s chief of staff says ‘peace circle’ plan was for other problems a former top staffer facedUnlikely battleground California plays key role -- again -- in setting US House's political balance

Donald Trump added yet another billionaire to his administration on Wednesday with his announcement that Jared Isaacman will become the next NASA administrator. “Jared will drive NASA’s mission of discovery and inspiration, paving the way for groundbreaking achievements in Space science, technology, and exploration,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. Isaacman made headlines in September after becoming the first private citizen to accomplish a spacewalk while in orbit around the Earth in a SpaceX chartered flight. This was Isaacman’s second chartered flight with Elon Musk’s privatized space exploration program; His first was a three-day orbit around the Earth , financed by Isaacman, which included three other private citizens and boasted no professional astronaut in its crew. Not unlike Musk, Isaacman made his money setting up a payment processing company, named Shift4, when he was 16. The company went public in 2020, making Isaacman a billionaire. Aviation began as a hobby for him , and turned into a business after he founded Draken International, which has had hundreds of millions in dollars in defense contracts with the U.S. Air Force, providing pilot training. Draken also boasts one of the largest private fleets of fighter jets. Isaacman sold his majority stake in Draken International to the Blackstone Group in 2019. In 2022, the Air Force announced it would not be renewing its $280 million "red air" adversary training services contract with the private defense firm saying its services were “inadequate” for training “high end.” In 2021, the then 37-year-old Isaacman linked up with Musk and announced he was chartering a SpaceX flight for his first trip into orbit. “We want to work towards a Jetsons-like world,” Isaacman said in an interview at the time. In a statement on Musk’s social media cesspool X, Isaacman wrote “I am passionate about America leading the most incredible adventure in human history,” promising to work toward “usher[ing] in an era where humanity becomes a true spacefaring civilization.” x I am honored to receive President Trump’s @realDonaldTrump nomination to serve as the next Administrator of NASA. Having been fortunate to see our amazing planet from space, I am passionate about America leading the most incredible adventure in human history. On my last mission... — Jared Isaacman (@rookisaacman) December 4, 2024 Like many of Trump’s picks, Isaacman has no specific science or government background. John Grunsfeld, a former NASA associate administrator and an astronaut, told The Washington Post that Isaacson is “an out-of-the-box candidate.” “He doesn’t have government experience, he doesn’t have previous NASA experience, he doesn’t come from the NASA contractor or the science side,” Grunsfeld said. ” Are you sick and tired of Elon Musk? Supporters and members of Melbourne’s large Jewish population have gathered for a vigil at the site of a burnt out synagogue. The ultra-Orthodox temple was firebombed and significantly damaged about 4am on Friday by what police suspect was a trio of young men or possibly teenagers. Two worshippers were in the temple at the time; there were no major injuries but a Jewish man who fled when a window was smashed burnt his hand on a door. Millions of dollars of holy texts, handwritten Torah scrolls, artefacts and furniture were destroyed or badly damaged. Flowers and messages of support have been laid at the site in the days since the attack, and on Sunday morning a vigil was held. About 300 hundred people gathered in a park near the synagogue, with many people draped in Israel flags and many others wearing traditional clothing signifying their Judaism. Attending media report a relatively high spirit among the crowd - given the circumstances -including singing and chanting. Former federal Liberal Party deputy leader Josh Frydenberg was in attendance but did not speak to the crowd. Local federal Labor MP Josh Burns took to the stage and received some jeers, but was defended state Liberal MP David Southwick. After the 45-minute gathering, people continued to place flowers on the temporary fencing surrounding the badly burnt temple. In the wake of the attack on Friday, the Prime Minister said the “shocking” and “un-Australian” incident “should be unequivocally condemned”. “To attack a synagogue is an attack of anti-Semitism. It’s attacking the right that all Australians should have to practice their faith in peace and security,” the Prime Minister said. Despite the condemnation, Anthony Albanese was criticised by current and former political opponents for not calling the attack a terrorist act. On Sunday he labelled the firebombing as an act of terrorism. “If you want my personal view, quite clearly terrorism is something that is aimed at creating fear in the community and the atrocities that occurred at the synagogue in Melbourne clearly were designed to create fear in the community,” Mr Albanese told reporters. “And therefore, from my personal perspective, certainly fulfils that definition of terrorism.” ASIO and Victorian anti-terrorism police are investigating and have not yet ruled the attack as a terrorist incident. Victorian and federal police forces will meet on Monday to officially determine whether the arson attack was an act of terror. The firebombing happened at the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea, in Melbourne’s southeast. Ripponlea and the surrounding suburbs have a high concentration of Jewish Australians. The Adass Israel Synagogue is home to members of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community and is one of the busiest Jewish temples in the country. The male members of this sect are recognisable by their white collared shirts, long black coats, broadbrimmed black hats and circular fur hats - the latter called shtreimel. Melbourne’s Adass Israel community traces its origins to Holocaust survivors from countries such as Hungary and Czechoslovakia. The Adass’ are known to be particularly insular and highly observant of Jewish religious law. Britain, Germany, France, Italy and several other European countries said Monday they would freeze all pending asylum requests from Syrians, a day after the ouster of president Bashar al-Assad. While Berlin and other governments said they were watching the fast-moving developments in the war-ravaged nation, Austria signalled it would soon deport refugees back to Syria. Far-right politicians elsewhere made similar demands, including in Germany -- home to Europe's largest Syrian community -- at a time when immigration has become a hot-button issue across the continent. Alice Weidel, of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany, reacted with disdain to Sunday's mass rallies by jubilant Syrians celebrating Assad's downfall. "Anyone in Germany who celebrates 'free Syria' evidently no longer has any reason to flee," she wrote on X. "They should return to Syria immediately." World leaders and Syrians abroad watched in disbelief at the weekend as Islamist-led rebels swept into Damascus, ending Assad's brutal rule while also sparking new uncertainty. A German foreign ministry spokesman pointed out that "the fact that the Assad regime has been ended is unfortunately no guarantee of peaceful developments" in the future. Germany has taken in almost one million Syrians, with most arriving in 2015-16 under ex-chancellor Angela Merkel. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said many Syrian refugees "now finally have hope of returning to their Syrian homeland" but cautioned that "the situation in Syria is currently very unclear". The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees had imposed a freeze on decisions for ongoing asylum procedures "until the situation is clearer". She added that "concrete possibilities of return cannot yet be predicted and it would be unprofessional to speculate in such a volatile situation". Rights group Amnesty International slammed Germany's freeze on asylum decisions, stressing that for now "the human rights situation in the country is completely unclear". The head of the UN refugee agency also cautioned that "patience and vigilance" were needed on the issue of refugee returns. In Austria, where about 100,000 Syrians live, conservative Chancellor Karl Nehammer instructed the interior ministry "to suspend all ongoing Syrian asylum applications and to review all asylum grants". Interior Minister Gerhard Karner added he had "instructed the ministry to prepare an orderly repatriation and deportation programme to Syria". "The political situation in Syria has changed fundamentally and, above all, rapidly in recent days," the ministry said, adding it is "currently monitoring and analysing the new situation". The French interior ministry said it too would put asylum requests from Syrians on hold, with authorities in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway announcing similar moves. Britain's interior ministry said it was taking the same measure "whilst we assess the current situation". The Italian government said late Monday after a cabinet meeting that it too was suspending asylum request "in line with other European partners." The leader of the far-right Sweden Democrats, a coalition partner in the government, said residence permits for Syrian refugees should now be "reviewed". "Destructive Islamist forces are behind the change of power" in Syria, wrote their leader Jimmie Akesson on X. "I see that groups are happy about this development here in Sweden. You should see it as a good opportunity to go home." In Greece, a government spokesman voiced hope that Assad's fall will eventually allow "the safe return of Syrian refugees" to their country, but without announcing concrete measures. In Germany, the debate gained momentum as the country heads towards February elections. Achim Brotel, president of a grouping of German communes, called for border controls to stop fleeing Assad loyalists reaching Germany. The centre-right opposition CDU suggested that rejected Syrian asylum-seekers should now lose so-called subsidiary protection. "If the reason for protection no longer applies, then refugees will have to return to their home country," CDU legislator Thorsten Frei told Welt TV. CDU MP Jens Spahn suggested that Berlin charter flights to Syria and offer 1,000 euros ($1,057) to "anyone who wants to return". A member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats criticised the debate as "populist and irresponsible". Greens party deputy Anton Hofreiter also said "it is completely unclear what will happen next in Syria" and deportation talk was "completely out of place". Many Syrians in Germany have watched the events in their home country with great joy but prefer to wait and see before deciding whether to return. "We want to go back to Syria," said Mahmoud Zaml, 25, who works in an Arabic pastry shop in Berlin, adding that he hopes to help "rebuild" his country. "But we have to wait a bit now," he told AFP. "We have to see what happens and if it is really 100 percent safe, then we will go back to Syria." burs-fz/rlp/phz/gv/givAutomotive Aftermarket M&A will Continue to Attract High Investor Interest in 2025

Economy comes first for Starmer as he defies critics of Saudi trip

BEIRUT —Tensions in northeast Syria between Kurdish-led authorities and Turkish-backed groups should be resolved politically or risk "dramatic consequences" for all of Syria, the United Nations envoy for the country Geir Pedersen told Reuters on Monday. Hostilities have escalated between Syrian rebels backed by Ankara and the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in the northeast since Bashar al-Assad was toppled on Dec. 8. Syrian armed groups seized the city of Manbij from the SDF on Dec. 9 and could be preparing to attack the key city of Kobani, or Ayn al-Arab, on the northern border with Turkey. "If the situation in the northeast is not handled correctly, it could be a very bad omen for the whole of Syria," Pedersen said by phone, adding that "if we fail here, it would have dramatic consequences when it comes to new displacement." The SDF - which is spearheaded by the Kurdish YPG - has proposed to withdraw its forces from the area in exchange for a complete truce. But Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, speaking alongside Syria's de facto new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on Sunday in Damascus, said the YPG should disband totally. Turkey regards the YPG as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants who have fought an insurgency against the Turkish state and are deemed terrorists by Ankara, Washington and the European Union. Pedersen said a political solution "would require serious, serious compromises" and should be part of the "transitional phase" led by Syria's new authorities in Damascus. Fidan said he had discussed the YPG presence with the new Syrian administration and believed Damascus would take steps to ensure Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday the country will remain in close dialogue with Sharaa. Kurdish groups have had autonomy across much of the northeast since Syria's war began in 2011, but now fear it could be wiped out by the country's new Islamist rule. Thousands of women rallied on Monday in a northeast city to condemn Turkey and demand their rights be respected. Pedersen said Sharaa had told him in meetings in Damascus last week that they were committed to "transitional arrangements that will be inclusive of all". But he said resolving tensions in the northeast would be a test for a new Syria after more than a half-century of Assad family rule. "The whole question of creating a new, free Syria would be off to a very, extremely ... to put it diplomatically, difficult start," he said. —ReutersFirst 12-team CFP set: Oregon seeded No. 1, SMU edges Alabama for final spot

Packers make final call on Jaire Alexander's status for pivotal MNF matchup against the SaintsEuropean stocks bounced around Monday while US equities shook off early weakness to push higher as investors waited to see if a so-called Santa Claus rally sweeps over the market. Global stock markets had a tumultuous time last week, spiraling lower after the US Federal Reserve signaled fewer interest rate cuts than had been expected for 2025. But it ended on a positive note as traders welcomed below-forecast US inflation data that raised hopes about the health of the world's biggest economy. That helped Asian markets move higher on Monday, but the positive trend faltered in Europe and stumbled initially in the United States. "Another up leg in US yields not only put pressure on stock indices but also drove the greenback higher," said IG analyst Axel Rudolph. But after a sluggish start, US stocks rose progressively in a quiet session with analysts pointing to low pre-holiday trading volumes. "Stocks didn't really have any direction in the morning, then we got this tech rally that just sort of drifted higher all day," said Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers. Analysts view elevated Treasury bond yields as a threat to year-end gains in an historically strong period of the calendar. Known as a Santa Claus rally, there are various explanations for the phenomenon including seasonal optimism and end-of-year tax considerations. But there remains some trepidation among investors as Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House, pledging to cut taxes, slash regulations and impose tariffs on imports, which some economists warn could reignite inflation. "The initial response to the US election was positive as investors focused on the obvious tailwinds to profitability: lower corporate tax rates and less regulation," said Ronald Temple, chief market strategist at Lazard. "However, I expect much more dispersion within the equity market when the reality of a much-less-friendly trade environment sets in." In Europe, the FTSE 100 moved higher as the pound slid following data that showed that the UK economy stagnated in the third quarter, revised down from initial estimates of 0.1 percent growth. Official data out of Spain on Monday showed that the Spanish economy grew 0.8 percent in the third quarter as domestic consumption and exports increased, comfortably outstripping the European Union average. In company news, shares in crisis-hit German auto giant Volkswagen lost more than three percent on the back of news Friday that it plans to axe 35,000 jobs by 2030 in a drastic cost-cutting plan. Shares in Japanese auto giant Honda rose over three percent after it announced Monday an agreement to launch merger talks with struggling compatriot Nissan that could create the world's third largest automaker. In a video posted on social media, protesters could be seen tearing down a statue of Assad's father in the suburbs of Damascus, while shouting "Down with Bashar al-Assad, Syria lives on." Meanwhile, Syrian rebels battled government forces for control of the key city of Homs. Since the rebels' sweep into Aleppo a week ago, government defenses have crumbled at a dizzying speed... ...putting the Assad dynasty's five-decade reign over Syria in danger, and the continued influence there of its main regional backer Iran. “...certainly there is an existential threat against the regime.” Qutaiba Idlbi is the resident senior fellow on Syria at the Atlantic Council “The regime finds itself isolated, especially because on one hand, Russia is bogged down in Ukraine. // But I think also more importantly, on the other hand, Iran is incapable of really responding effectively to protect and defend the regime.” The U.S. and other Western officials said the lightning rebel advance suggests Assad's government could fall within the week. The pace of events has stunned Arab capitals and raised fears of a new wave of regional instability. According to the state news agency, Assad remains in Damascus and the military said it was reinforcing around the capital and south. The foreign ministers of Russia, Iran and the main rebels' backer Turkey said they met in Doha on Saturday and agreed on the importance of Syria's territorial integrity and on restarting a political process. They said in a joint statement along with five Arab countries, that a political solution was needed to stop military operations and protect civilians in Syria. But there was no indication they agreed on any concrete steps, with the situation inside Syria changing by the hour.

LONDON (AP) — West Ham players showed their support for seriously injured teammate Michail Antonio before and during their Premier League home win against Wolverhampton on Monday, two days after his car crash. The players warmed up in “Antonio 9” jerseys and walked on to the field in tops adorning his name. The club will put the walk-out tops up for auction along with every match jersey worn against Wolves, with the proceeds going to medical charities and matched by the club’s board. West Ham fans stood in London Stadium and applauded for Antonio in the ninth, and when captain Jarrod Bowen scored the 2-1 winner in the second half, he approached supporters behind the goal carrying an Antonio jersey. “To share that moment, he's not here with us but I'm sure (Antonio) was watching and the fans, you heard them,” Bowen told broadcaster Sky Sports. “An emotional couple of days.” Before the game, Bowen said, “Everyone loves Mic, he is a big character. “He is not just a teammate, he is a friend and has been for many years. A dad as well to beautiful children. It is one of those things where life is bigger than football. The main thing is Mic is safe and well and here to tell the story. Saturday was a really difficult time. He is a warrior and a fighter, he always has been, and I know he will be back stronger for this." Antonio, a 34-year-old Jamaica international, was recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery on what West Ham described as a “lower limb fracture.” He was involved in a one-car incident outside London on Saturday, after which he was hospitalized and kept under close supervision. He wished the team well by video before the match. Antonio has made more than 300 appearances for West Ham since joining the club from Nottingham Forest in 2015, and played in all 14 games this season before the incident. JAMES CITY — Grove Christian Outreach Center on Wednesday opened the first free grocery market in the Williamsburg area for families facing food insecurity. Christened The Gathering Place, the new marketplace inside the center at 8880 Pocahontas Trail provides a free shopping experience to families who need a little extra help. Replacing the center’s original food pantry program, the market provides families with fresh produce options while also helping prevent food waste by having them pick according to their own preferences. During a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Terry Banez, CEO of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce, congratulated Grove Christian Outreach Center Executive Director Katie Patrick and her team for their efforts in creating the market. “What an amazing and beautiful place, and we wish you much success,” Banez said. “It’s really phenomenal what you’ve all done.” The Gathering Place saw much support in its fruition. Along with donations from community and business partners, the center was selected for Food Lion Feeds’ annual event, The Great Pantry Makeover. This saw Food Lion associates volunteer in completing the center’s buildout while also stocking shelves with over 3,000 pounds of shelf-stable food. Likewise, the Williamsburg Health Foundation provided funding for the market’s installation of new refrigeration systems for fresh produce storage. The approximately 2,000-square-foot space that makes up the market was previously the service room for the original Grove Community Church. “The pastor and his wife were founders of Grove Christian Outreach Center. The church was still meeting here and just over the years, the last several years, we recognized the need for the space,” Patrick said. The Gathering Place joins the nonprofit center’s 20-plus years of feeding families in the Williamsburg area, as well as providing clothing, school supplies, financial assistance, holiday programs, transportation and more. Last year, the center served nearly 32,000 people through various programs. It provided over 1,000 food pantry visits to area families last month alone. Patrick expressed the importance of providing a meaningful shopping experience for those who are struggling to put food on the table. Families qualify to receive services based on need. “If I have to stand in line for food, I really want to get food that my kids are going to eat, that’s meaningful to me and the culture that my family celebrates ... and that I am not going to throw away,” Patrick said. “I love making sure people are well fed. If you guys have never heard me say it, food is love. It’s how we show up in the world, and it means a lot.” Stephanie Kalantarians, chair of the center’s board of directors, said there is a real need to help those with food insecurity that goes beyond the Grove community. Someone is generally considered to have food insecurity when they lack access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. “We’re serving the Grove community, but I think it’s so important for people to have an awareness that this need exists in your community,” Kalantarians said. “And the need is increasing, doubling, in years time.” For more information, call 757-887-1100 or visit groveoutreach.com . (Bloomberg Opinion) -- Brazil isn’t the only big emerging market struggling with the dollar’s relentless strength. Indonesia, so often depicted as a rising star and gifted with an abundance of natural resources that the global economy desires, is busy propping up its currency. Officials have described their interventions as particularly bold. They need to be: Few things are as totemic in the vast archipelago as the standing of the rupiah. It has lost about 6% against the greenback this quarter and recently weakened beyond the psychologically important 16,000 level. Aside from being a big, round number, the slide resonates for a couple of reasons. The collapse of the currency during the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s ushered in more than a deep recession — it was midwife to sectarian strife and a re-ordering of the state. The new president, Prabowo Subianto, a former top army commander, has just taken office with plans to turbocharge the economy. Indonesia’s contemporary performance has generally been praised by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The nation is often depicted as a comer — thanks to a huge population and vast mineral wealth — a nation that will share the limelight in coming years with India, China and the US. But Prabowo has expressed dissatisfaction and, during his campaign, targeted an annual rate of growth in the vicinity of 8%. He wants the government to play a bigger role in driving the economy and has made skeptical comments about laws that curtail deficits. More spending would tend to weaken the rupiah, hardly desirable right now. The rules are there for good reason. History explains the high degree of sensitivity to fluctuations. A former finance minister once likened watching a drop in the rupiah to a national trauma. Prabowo is now challenged in a manner a military career didn’t prepare him for. The ultimate check on power is what the market will bear. When EMs shine, Indonesia does well. When they are on the nose, as they are today, assessments are less hagiographic. As rough a patch as this is, Jakarta can take some comfort from being part of the pack. The dollar's advance has many central banks on the defensive. Brazil's travails have grabbed most of the headlines, but the retreat has been broad. The real is down 12% over the past three months and more than 20% this year. The yen is taking a beating and the Malaysian ringgit's bumper third quarter has given way to a slide. The South Korean won has taken a drubbing since the president briefly declared martial law, a grave mistake that backfired and led to his impeachment. Bank Indonesia's intervention has prevented a steeper decline. Also significant is what hasn’t happened. The central bank passed on an interest-rate cut this month that would have been justified by contained inflation — were that the only consideration. With the rupiah under pressure, there was little choice other than to demur. The bank will also buy government bonds in the secondary market. Indonesia is in a much sounder economic position than its South American counterpart. Inflation is under control, while Brazil is braced for price advances next year that exceed the central bank's target. Thanks to rules enacted by Jakarta after the 1990s collapse, fiscal deficits are limited to 3% of gross domestic product. Brazil's shortfall is approaching 10% of GDP. Prabowo has occasionally chafed at budget constraints and desires an economy that would grow faster than any other, up from the respectable average of around 5% recorded under his predecessor. If a quarter-point rate cut is on pause, tossing out these strictures should be off the agenda. (A probe of the central bank by the anti-corruption agency may also be weighing on sentiment. Bank Indonesia’s governor has vowed to cooperate.) They do share a common problem, though: The muscular greenback. Donald Trump's election in November, has most currencies on the defensive. The difficulty is acute for emerging markets, which enjoyed much demand in the late 20th century and the early years of the current one. The coming era was said to belong to them; it was easy to dismiss the West as yesterday's hero. EMs are, however, no longer so in vogue. A big part of the diminished allure has been China's disappointing economic run after the rapid expansion of the 1980s that lifted living standards dramatically. To a large extent, the appeal of developing countries in their heyday was a bet on China's march to commercial and financial supremacy. That assumption is now questionable, to say the least. A closely watched JPMorgan Chase & Co. currency index is heading for a seventh successive year of losses. In the weeks leading up to his inauguration in October, Prabowo looked like he was going to be the beneficiary of a favorable environment. Inflation was coming down around the world and rate cuts by major central banks would make it easier for local authorities to juice growth. Bank Indonesia began what was considered likely to be a series of reductions in September — hours before the Federal Reserve undertook its first trim since the early days of the pandemic. Luck may still shine upon the new president. Prabowo already made a shrewd call in retaining the highly respected finance minister, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, who has served since 2016. Prabowo has big plans. He’s finding out early, though, that power can come in many shapes and forms. Not least of which is that flickering screen on the trading floor.
