Pep Guardiola’s side avoided the indignity of a sixth successive defeat in all competitions and looked on course for a welcome victory thanks to a double from Erling Haaland – the first from the penalty spot – and a deflected effort from Ilkay Gundogan. Yet Guardiola was left with his head in hands as Feyenoord roared back in the last 15 minutes with goals from Anis Hadj Moussa, Sergio Gimenez and David Hancko, two of them after Josko Gvardiol errors. Arsenal delivered the statement Champions League win Mikel Arteta had demanded as they swept aside Sporting Lisbon 5-1. Arteta wanted his team to prove their European credentials, and goals from Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard got their continental campaign back on track in style following the 1-0 defeat at Inter Milan last time out. A memorable victory also ended Sporting’s unbeaten start to the season, a streak of 17 wins and one draw, the vast majority of which prompted Manchester United to prise away head coach Ruben Amorim. Paris St Germain were left in serious of danger of failing to progress in the Champions League as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Kim Min-jae’s header late in the first half was enough to send PSG to a third defeat in the competition this season, leaving them six points off the automatic qualification places for the last 16 with three games to play. Luis Enrique’s side, who had Ousmane Dembele sent off, were deservedly beaten by Bayern who dominated chances and possession. Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid were 6-0 winners away to Sparta Prague, Julian Alvarez and Angel Correa each scoring twice whilst there were also goals from Marcos Llorente and Antoine Griezmann. Barcelona ended tournament debutants Brest’s unbeaten start with a 3-0 victory courtesy of two goals from Robert Lewandowski – one a penalty – and Dani Olmo. Lewandowski’s first was his 100th Champions League goal, only the third man to reach the mark after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. A Castello Lukeba own goal saw Inter Milan go top of the standings with a narrow 1-0 win over RB Leipzig at San Siro, whilst Bayer Leverkusen were emphatic victors against Red Bull Salzburg, Florian Wirtz scoring twice to move Xabi Alonso’s side into the automatic qualification places. Atalanta continued their strong start, albeit whilst conceding a first goal in Europe this season in a 6-1 win away to Young Boys, whilst Tammy Abraham scored the decisive goal as AC Milan beat Slovan Bratislava 3-2.Oliver Glasner declared Crystal Palace are on the right path after they finally broke their away duck with a 1-0 win at Ipswich. Jean-Philippe Mateta struck in the second half with the only real piece of quality in a nervy encounter between two struggling teams. It is now two wins and three draws from the last six matches for Glasner’s side, whose winter revival is gathering pace nicely following a sticky start to the campaign. “I feel very happy, we’re all very pleased with the result, it was not the best performance but the result was more important,” said the Eagles boss. “Most of the time we controlled the game and we scored an amazing goal, a fantastic finish from JP. “We had more chances to decide the game but we couldn’t, but I think the win was well deserved. “We didn’t give them any chances from open play and with a clean sheet you can always take the win. “It’s a big win. Now it’s not time to sit back and relax but to keep going. In four days we face Manchester City. We stay humble. There are still many things to improve but we are on the right path.” Ipswich looked the likelier to score as a low-key first half drew to a close and were denied by a point-blank save by Dean Henderson from Harry Clarke’s near-post header. Shortly after the interval Wes Burns got clear down the right and lifted an inviting cross towards Liam Delap, whose header was straight at Henderson. However, from out of nowhere Palace conjured up a lightning counter-attack to go ahead on the hour. Eberechi Eze led the charge before feeding Mateta, who surged forward with a couple of stepovers before brushing off the attention of Jacob Greaves and finishing superbly past Arijanet Muric. It was the French forward’s sixth goal of the season, and his first away from Selhurst Park. Back came Ipswich with Leif Davis fizzing in another cross for Delap, who somehow mistimed his jump and completely missed the ball from six yards. As time ticked down Greaves looped a header against the far post, with the rebound just eluding substitute Ali-Al Hamadi. “Frustrating night,” said Town boss Kieran McKenna. “It was a tight first half, we weren’t fantastic in terms of the flow of the game and didn’t create as many opportunities as we wanted. But having said that neither did our opponents. “In the second half we conceded a really poor goal and that proved decisive. We can do better than we did tonight.”

City at least avoided a sixth consecutive defeat but the manner in which they blew a commanding advantage will do little to settle nerves in and around the club ahead of Sunday’s trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool. City appeared in total control after a brace from Erling Haaland and another from Ilkay Gundogan had them three up seven minutes into the second half, but after Anis Hadj Moussa got one back in the 75th minute, City imploded. “It is what it is, difficult to swallow right now,” Guardiola said. “The game was good, we played well, we scored three and could have scored more. We do everything and then we give away, especially the first one, and after we are not stable enough to do it. “It’s not about no run or no commitment, but football you have to be [switched on] in certain moments to do it.” Santiago Gimenez got Feyenoord’s second in the 82nd minute and David Hancko got a dramatic equaliser in the 89th, making City the first team in Champions League history to have led 3-0 in the 75th minute of a match and fail to win. Some City fans, who suffered through Saturday’s 4-0 humiliation at home to Tottenham, made their frustrations known at the final whistle. “The last game against Tottenham, 0-4, the supporters were there, applause,” he said. “They are disappointed of course and we understand it. “People come here not to remember success of the past, they come here to see the team win and perform well. I am not the one when the situation is bad or good [to say] what they have to do. “These supporters, when we go away, our fans are amazing, travelling. There is nothing to do and they are right to express what they feel.” Guardiola’s own frustrations were apparent given the number of scratches visible on his head after the match. The Catalan had arrived at the ground with a cut on his nose, which he said he had caused himself with a long fingernail. City now face a trip to Anfield to face the Liverpool side of former Feyenoord boss Arne Slot, whose named was chanted by the visiting fans during the match. “Everybody knows the situation, I don’t have to add absolutely anything,” Guardiola said. “We are going to train tomorrow, recovery and prepare the next game. Day off and we have two or three days to prepare that and go for it. We will learn for the future and what has been has been. “It will be a tough season for us and we have to accept it for many circumstances.” Feyenoord’s late fightback brought jubilant scenes in the away end. “I think if you’re from Feyenoord it was an unbelievable evening,” head coach Brian Priske said. “A strange game which ends 3-3 which is an unbelievable result for us and also remarkable in the essence of being 3-0 down in minute 75 away from home against still, for me, the best team in the world. “Normally we don’t celebrate draws but this one is a little bit special.”Biden hails Lebanon ceasefire deal as 'good news'

The Titans have issues to fix and hope to keep slim playoff hopes alive when they host the Jags

Ukraine’s allies have shifted their focus from seeking a victory to trying to put President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the best position to counter Russian advances or negotiate a possible ceasefire, people familiar with the matter said. For now, that means NATO is redoubling efforts to rush more weapons to the war-torn country as Kyiv forces are slowly losing ground, raising the specter the eventual truce may freeze the conflict with swathes of Ukraine under occupation by Vladimir Putin’s troops. Putin has shown no willingness to discuss a ceasefire, but the return of Donald Trump to the White House has focused NATO allies on how to shore up the political will to sustain the nearly three-year war as morale starts to fade. As foreign ministers gathered in Brussels this week have focused on how to supply more weapons, governments have begun considering various negotiated scenarios to end the war, the people said. The discussion includes the kind of security guarantees that would protect Ukraine, while not provoking Putin, the people said. All of them spoke on the condition of anonymity given the political and security sensitivity of the planning, which is private and still incomplete. One possible option for a cease-fire includes creating a demilitarized zone. In case of a cease-fire, European troops would probably secure and patrol it, according to one senior NATO diplomat. Those discussions come amid recognition that the situation in Ukraine is unsustainable and negotiations should begin soon, according to another senior western diplomat. For European allies, the scenarios also offer an opportunity to show Trump they can stay relevant if cease-fire talks eventually crystallize. The private considerations over how the war may end took place as NATO’s secretary general, Mark Rutte, tried on Wednesday to keep the focus on surging weapons to Ukraine, setting aside for now the contours of any cease-fire. “We must do more than just keep Ukraine in the fight,” Rutte said in his closing remarks at the NATO meeting. “We must provide enough support to change the trajectory of this war once and for all.” “Changing the trajectory means that where the frontline is now moving westwards we have to make sure that Ukraine is in a position of strength” when it comes to potential talks, he added. Zelenskyy himself signaled in recent interviews that a diplomatic solution is needed and that he’d accept an end to hostilities with parts of eastern Ukraine occupied, an outcome recent polls have shown a majority of Ukrainians would tolerate. “Zelenskyy’s acknowledgment that Ukraine won’t be able to liberate all Russian-occupied territory militarily is more than a recognition of reality,” said Lucian Kim, International Crisis Group analyst and author of recently published Putin’s Revenge: Why Russia Invaded Ukraine. “It is also an opening to future peace efforts by a second Trump administration.” The key for Zelenskyy — and the complication for NATO — is his request that the alliance provide security guarantees over the portions of the country that Kyiv still controls, as well as the uncertain possibility of regaining that territory later through diplomacy. The Ukrainian president said on Sunday that any invitation to join the alliance must apply to his entire country, within its internationally recognized borders. His country’s previous experience with security guarantees, provided jointly by Russia, the U.S. and Britain by the Budapest Memorandum in 1994 in return for Kyiv giving up its Soviet-era nuclear arsenal, proved worthless when Putin invaded. Membership for Ukraine in NATO — with its security guarantee that a war against one is a war against all — is out of the question in the short term. It would also be a red line for Putin, who sees NATO on Russia’s border as a threat and Ukraine ultimately a part of his sphere of influence. Instead, Kyiv would need security guarantees that potentially bind the U.S. or other allies to come to its defense if Russia were to breach any cease-fire. Those would go beyond the commitments by the U.S. and dozens of allies to bolster Ukraine’s military over the long term, including with training. One goal of bulking up Kyiv’s military, and allowing it to strike deeper into Russia with western weapons, is to convince Putin that talks are better than fighting, which now is unlikely with Russian forces continuing to advance. “We don’t want to sugarcoat anything,” General Christian Freuding, head of the German Defense Ministry’s planning and command staff, said in comments posted online. Russia is taking the initiative “on all fronts, in all areas” and making continuous territorial gains. That includes on the eastern transport hub of Pokrovsk, which he sees Ukrainian forces needing to abandon by early next year. According to a NATO senior official, the pace of Russia’s advances is increasing, putting Ukrainian frontlines under additional pressure. And while Russia is sustaining casualties of about 1,500 killed and wounded a day, they have also been able to recruit around 30,000 new personnel a month, cementing the country’s manpower advantage. “Putin is clearly in the lead and doesn’t particularly want any negotiations,” Estonia’s ambassador to NATO, Juri Luik, said in an interview with the nation’s public broadcaster ERR. Worries within the administration of outgoing President Joe Biden that a Russian victory would embolden Moscow allies China, Iran and North Korea are at least partly behind the renewed surge of artillery shells, missiles, land mines and air defense systems. NATO’s Rutte said in an interview with the Financial Times this week that he delivered a similar warning to Trump about America’s rivals when he visited the president-elect recently in Florida. Even without a shift to Trump, who has criticized the billions the U.S. has pledged to support Ukraine, dwindling manpower and weapons mean talks would need to begin next year anyway, according to Samuel Charap, a senior political scientist at Rand. “Ukraine lacks the manpower to stop the Russian offensive, and the west has little left to give in terms of existing stocks of weapons,” Charap said. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken landed in Brussels this week, planning to discuss how to protect Ukraine over the long term, despite his short time left. “You’ve got me, you’ve got us,” Blinken told Rutte before their meeting. “Until the 20th of January,” he added, referring to Biden’s last day in office.Oliver Glasner: Crystal Palace are heading in right direction after Ipswich win

best boom streamers battle 5 NEW DELHI: Manufacturing in India has been completely transformed with the country now exporting goods that it imported, union railways and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Thursday, while exuding confidence that the country's economy will be the third largest in the world by 2027-28. "Our nominal growth is around 10% to 11%. So, we should be around Rs 330 lakh crore (around $4 trillion) right now. Simultaneously, the Japanese and German economies are also passing through a very tough phase at this point of time. So, my estimate would be, we should be the third largest economy somewhere in 2027 or maybe 2028," he said. Responding to a query on exports and manufacturing of sophisticated goods, Vaishnaw said, "Manufacturing in India is totally different from what it used to be 10 years ago. Today, we are a good exporter of telecom. Some of the most complex equipment is exported today. I think the telecom exports should be almost Rs 40,000 crore". Talking about semiconductor manufacturing plans, he said, "It's only during Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji's period that we got success. Our policy was announced in January 2022 and we already have five under construction units for semiconductor manufacturing in December 2024. We should see the first Made in India chip shipping out in mid-2025". Building the case for support of one nation, one-election, Vaishnaw said, "We have made a very clear announcement in the Bharatiya Janata Party manifesto for the general elections that we believe in one nation, one election". Home | Life on the edge in Bolivia’s gravity-defying ‘suicide homes’ In Bolivia’s highland city of El Alto, the row of colourful corrugated metal roofs – blues, oranges, reds and greens – for a moment distracts from the terrifying sight below: a precipitous drop inches from the houses, known locally as “suicide homes” for the high risk the inhabitants take. The thin row of flimsy structures hangs on the edge of a cliff formed of earth with a sheer drop hundreds of feet to the rocky escarpment below. Experts and city officials say the cliff is eroding, making the homes even more dangerous – hence their nickname. The precarious homes often serve as workplaces for Aymara shamans, known as yatiris, where they make offerings to the Pachamama, or Earth Mother. But heavy rains and global warming are increasingly undermining the buildings’ foundations. “The precipice in this valley is 90 degrees,” said Gabriel Pari, municipal secretary of water, sanitation, environmental management and risk at El Alto’s mayoral office. “That is precisely why we want them to leave this place, if they do not want to leave we are going to have to use force.” The shamans, however, are clinging on, despite the back doors of the rickety homes having only a narrow ledge before the ground drops away completely. “We are not going to move from this place, because this is our daily workplace,” said yatiri Manuel Mamani, making an offering to the Pachamama with a fire outside his home. “But we are going to take care of the soil, especially the rainwater, we are going to channel it so that the water goes somewhere else.” El Alto, and the highland political capital of La Paz nestled in the valley below it, often bend the mind with the sheer landscape that reflects the surrounding Andean mountains. It led local authorities to build cable cars to help people get around. And that landscape is getting more treacherous as weather patterns become more extreme, something that has been exacerbated by climate change. Gabriel Lopez Chiva, another yatiri, said he was confident, however, that the Pachamama would protect him. “We can do an offering ceremony, we do it as a payment and in this way the land will never move because Pachamama needs an offering. It is like giving food and this way this place will not move. On the contrary it will stabilise,” he said. SABC © 2024

Trump offers support for dockworkers union by saying ports shouldn’t install more automated systemsFor “Hysteria!” actresses Anna Camp and Julie Bowen, horror is harder than comedy. “Horror is really hard actually because there is a fine line you have to walk; you have to make it feel grounded and you’re put in these extreme circumstances: You’re being possessed or pulled through the air, there’s nothing you can do to relate to that,” explained Camp of “Pitch Perfect” fame. “With comedy, you can have a relatable situation and go, ‘I’ve been in situations like that.’ There’s nothing you can compare (horror) to, so you have to use your imagination. I find it harder. Your imagination goes home with you at the end of the day. You’re still thinking crazy thoughts.” Bowen, best known for playing Claire Dunphy on “Modern Family,” agreed. “Comedy’s pretty binary because it’s like either you can make people laugh or you don’t. I can’t watch horror. I’m terrified, terrified! I am the easiest scare in the world, so as far as doing (horror), I want to make it as real as possible. It was hard because I had to be really, really crazy. There were times when I’d get back to my hotel room at 3 a.m., I didn’t want to be alone in my head,” said Bowen, laughing. Camp, Bowen, Royal Oak native Bruce Campbell (“Evil Dead”), showrunner David A. Goodman (“Futurama”), and Ypsilanti native/creator Matthew Scott Kane (“American Horror Story”) were promoting “Hysteria!” at the New York Comic Con in October. The horror series is streaming on Peacock. Set in the fictional Michigan town of Happy Hollow, the first episode of “Hysteria” begins with a popular quarterback’s disappearance and a pentagram is discovered on a garage door. As a result, rumors of the occult and satanic influence run rampant through the town. A trio of outcasts in a heavy metal band called Dethkrunch exploit this by rebranding themselves as a satanic metal band, which leads to them becoming the targets of the town’s witch hunt. “Something on my mind a lot in 2019 was we’re living in this post-factual age with social media. It seemed like decades and decades ago, you could trust the news. Now everything is in question. When lies end up getting disseminated as truth, that starts to warp people’s version of reality. Suddenly, they’re living in a world other people are not. That was going on in the world I was living in and I very quickly connected it to the 1980s satanic panic. It’s not really that different because people were saying Ozzy Osbourne, Jason Voorhees (of ‘Friday the 13th’), and the Smurfs were going to turn your kids into satanists and kill you in your sleep. That didn’t happen. It wasn’t true, but so many people got worked up into such a fervor over it, bad things happened. ... It was smoke without fire,” Kane said. “Disinformation is not new,” Campbell said. “Disinformation will tear a town apart.” Campbell portrays Happy Hollow Police Chief Ben Dandridge. “This guy’s a reasonable cop; he’s a rational person who doesn’t treat the teenagers like they’re idiots. It’s all very refreshing,” he said. “I want to play that guy again. I want cops to be that guy. I’m playing the cop (that) cops need to be. That’s my whole motivation for playing this guy: How would you like cops to be, especially the guy in charge, the chief of police? They’re lucky to have Chief Dandridge.” “It was truly an exciting moment when Bruce signed on,” Goodman said. By the end of the first episode, a supernatural phenomenon happens to Linda Campbell, played by Bowen. “Linda seems like one thing, then you realize she’s bananas. She’s either bananas or she’s possessed. Either way, it’s a complicated thing to play,” Bowen said. “With Julie, you can have your cake and eat it too,” Kane said. “She’s this fun, quirky mom. ... As the episode goes on, she’s pulled deeper into this thing and crazy stuff starts happening. That final act of the first episode was my favorite moment with her because this announced that this is not Claire Dunphy. We’re not doing that again; we’re pushing her as a performer. “Julie was so excited about doing stunts. She told us on many occasions she’s very sturdy and can take it. The same goes for Bruce and for Anna. We didn’t ask anyone to give us a flavor of the thing they did before. We cast people we loved so much (in their famous projects) that we wanted to give them the opportunity to do the exact opposite.” Added Bowen: “I got this script and was like, ‘Oh great. She’s a mom. How fun.’ I love moms. I’m a mom, but I felt this was not worth flying out of town to Georgia and being away from my kids. Then I got to the end of the pilot and was like, ‘She’s crazy!’ Is she possessed? There’s a lot more questions. It’s fun to just stretch again and do things I haven’t done in a while, which I found really exciting.” Kane said he felt lucky Bowen signed on at the beginning. “She was the first adult actor to sign on. That gave us such credibility to have a two-time Emmy-winning actor leading this show. Suddenly, it goes from this script from a relatively unknown writer into the new Julie Bowen show,” he said. It was the quality of the writing that attracted Camp, Bowen and Campbell to “Hysteria!” “I loved the script; it was incredibly well-written. It was immersed in the time period. It was such a good coming-of-age story, too — the feeling of being in high school again, being in the 1980s,” Camp said. “I talked to Matt who said my character (Tracy) was incredibly pivotal to the series and we’ll learn about why she is the way she is. So I was like, ‘I’d love to do this!’” For Campbell, the writing is everything. “A lot of times, I’ll get a script that could make the words interchangeable with every other character because the writing is very bland and just doesn’t have the detail you need. This was different. Every character was pretty distinct and pretty well-drawn,” he said. “It’s quality. It’s not a (expletive) show. It’s a real show that’s playing around with interesting themes. A lot of it is still relevant to this day.” “Hysteria!” has other Michigan connections, including University of Michigan alumnus Jonathan Goldstein (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Dondero High School alumnus Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kong: Skull Island”), who both serve as executive producers. Kane explained why he set “Hysteria!” in Michigan. “You write what you know. I grew up in Ypsilanti, so that had a lot to do with it. More importantly, when you’re in a small town in the Midwest — somewhere like Michigan — these things don’t ever happen and word spreads fast and paranoia spreads quickly and (everything’s) blown out of proportion and takes up a lot of people’s minds,” he said. “Whether or not something is real doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if there are people willing to believe it does and willing it into the world. What does it matter if it’s objectively real or living rent-free in someone’s head?”Herro, Adebayo not enough as Heat fall to Hawks, 120-110, amid ongoing Butler absence

Trump picks Kelly Loeffler to lead Small Business AdministrationEvery weekday, the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer releases the Homestretch — an actionable afternoon update, just in time for the last hour of trading on Wall Street. Thursday markets: Stocks are taking a breather after Wednesday's big surge, especially in the Nasdaq Composite and the more narrow "Magnificent Seven" cohort. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note broke above 4.3% after a look at wholesale inflation for November, known as the producer price index, came in a little on the hotter side. Nevertheless, the market still overwhelmingly expects the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates by a quarter percentage point at its policy meeting next week, which would bring its target range to 4.25% to 4.5%. What happens in 2025 remains up for debate, though. We would not be surprised to see a "hawkish cut" next week, with the Fed continuing its messaging that it is in no hurry to lower interest rates. Separately, it was a historic day at the New York Stock Exchange with President-elect Donald Trump ringing the opening bell. Jim Cramer had the opportunity to interview Trump on the floor the exchange. Here's a closer look at some of Trump's comments on the stock market and important trends such as artificial intelligence and growing electricity demand. Bristol dividend boost: Bristol Myers Squib announced late Wednesday a 3.3% increase to its quarterly dividend, bringing its annualized payout up to $2.48. With its recent slide to around $56 per share, the stock is now trading with a bountiful 4.4% dividend yield — and we are eyeing our next buy of the drugmaker, which we like for its innovative schizophrenia treatment. At around $56 and change, the stock is only about 4% above where it traded before AbbVie 's rival schizophrenia drug failed to meet its primary endpoint in a pair of mid-stage trials. Bristol Myers stock jumped from $54.14 to $59.82 on AbbVie's Nov. 11 update, and the fact that it's given back more than half of those gains looks like an opportunity. It was a huge moment for Bristol Myers because rather than looking like it had a big lead in schizophrenia, it seems like it might have this space to itself for a while – at least when it comes to novel approaches to treating the disease. That's a big, financially lucrative difference. Up next: Two companies in the portfolio report earnings after Thursday's closing bell: Costco and Broadcom. For Costco, the sales figures are already understood since the company reports them every month. That's why we'll be more focused on membership fee growth and trends, and how the company is investing to keep prices down. For Broadcom, the three things we are watching are: (1) AI sales, both custom chips and networking, (2) the recovery of its legacy semiconductor business, and (3) the VMWare integration. Broadcom shares surged Wednesday on a media report that said Apple is considering partnering with Broadcom for a custom AI chip. But Broadcom shares gave back some of those gains Thursday after Bloomberg reported Apple plans to switch out Broadcom's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips next year for an in-house component. This is a little contradictory to the Bloomberg story last Friday that reported on Apple's plan to switch out Qualcomm's modem system but continue its relationship. Could this be a situation where Broadcom loses its wireless partnership but gets a big AI win that could be more lucrative over time? Time will tell. Trump offers a public show of support for Pete Hegseth, his embattled nominee to lead the PentagonBy JOSH BOAK WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday voiced his support for the dockworkers union before their contract expires next month at Eastern and Gulf Coast ports, saying that any further “automation” of the ports would harm workers. Foreign companies have made a fortune in the U.S. by giving them access to our markets. They shouldn’t be looking for every last penny knowing how many families are hurt.” The International Longshoremen’s Association has until Jan. 15 to negotiate a new contract with the U.S. Maritime Alliance, which represents ports and shipping companies. At the heart of the dispute is whether ports can install automated gates, cranes and container-moving trucks that could make it faster to unload and load ships. The union argues that automation would lead to fewer jobs, even though higher levels of productivity could do more to boost the salaries of remaining workers. The Maritime Alliance said in a statement that the contract goes beyond ports to “supporting American consumers and giving American businesses access to the global marketplace – from farmers, to manufacturers, to small businesses, and innovative start-ups looking for new markets to sell their products.” “To achieve this, we need modern technology that is proven to improve worker safety, boost port efficiency, increase port capacity, and strengthen our supply chains,” said the alliance, adding that it looks forward to working with Trump. In October, the union representing 45,000 dockworkers went on strike for three days, raising the risk that a prolonged shutdown could push up inflation by making it difficult to unload container ships and export American products overseas. The issue pits an incoming president who won November’s election on the promise of bringing down prices against commitments to support blue-collar workers along with the kinds of advanced technology that drew him support from Silicon Valley elite such as billionaire Elon Musk. Trump sought to portray the dispute as being between U.S. workers and foreign companies, but advanced ports are also key for staying globally competitive. China is opening a $1.3 billion port in Peru that could accommodate ships too large for the Panama Canal. There is a risk that shippers could move to other ports, which could also lead to job losses. Mexico is constructing a port that is highly automated, while Dubai, Singapore and Rotterdam already have more advanced ports. Instead, Trump said that ports and shipping companies should eschew “machinery, which is expensive, and which will constantly have to be replaced.” “For the great privilege of accessing our markets, these foreign companies should hire our incredible American Workers, instead of laying them off, and sending those profits back to foreign countries,” Trump posted. “It is time to put AMERICA FIRST!”Nearly half of U.S. teens are online 'constantly,' Pew report findsBOULDER, Colo. — A 72-year-old lifelong Colorado fan with end-stage kidney failure waited to the side of the field in his wheelchair for Travis Hunter and the rest of the Buffaloes. One by one, players strolled over and signed a football for Riley Rhoades, his face lighting up with each signature. Standing close by and taking in the scene was Jeremy Bloom. He's become a wish facilitator for older adults. Bloom, the former Colorado wide receiver and Olympic freestyle skier, started the Wish of a Lifetime foundation in 2008, which has made thousands of aspirations turn into reality for older adults. The list of granted wishes range from taking veterans back to the beaches of Normandy to helping late-in-life authors publish a book. He's staged concerts for musicians, assisted some in daredevil feats such as jumping out of an airplane and even lined up a meeting between an Olympic medalist and former President Barack Obama. For Rhoades, his wish was simply to return to Folsom Field again, the place where he used to have season tickets but hasn't attended a game since 2004. "Everybody has somebody in their life —a grandparent, friend, neighbor — at that age where you wish you had more resources to help," said Bloom, whose college career was cut short two decades ago when the NCAA denied his reinstatement to play football and still ski professionally after receiving endorsement money to fuel his Olympic dreams. "Nothing can compare to seeing someone else's eyes light up because you helped make their dream come true." The foundation is a tribute to his grandparents. But the concept began to take root when he was a teenager. He was in Japan for a World Cup freestyle skiing competition when a woman tried to hop on a crowded bus. There was no room, but everyone in front rose from their seats to make space. That stuck with him, along with seeing these acts of kindness for older adults all over Europe and Asia as he traveled. An idea formed — bring that same level of appreciation to the United States, with a wish-granting element. Bloom's organization has been a charitable affiliate of AARP since 2020. It was the yearning of Rhoades that brought the two of them to Folsom Field last weekend. Rhoades, who had season tickets at Colorado for 27 years, wanted to see the Buffaloes in person after watching the team's resurgence on television. A few years ago, Rhoades, who was born with spina bifida, was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure. Being among the 54,646 fans Saturday stirred up plenty of emotions for Rhoades, as he watched the 16th-ranked Buffaloes (8-2, 6-1 Big 12, No. 16 CFP) beat Utah. Colorado remains in the race for not only a conference title but a spot in the College Football Playoff. "It's just great to be back here again," Rhoades said as he pointed out the section where he used to watch games. "It's just ... so cool." For Bloom, the success that coach Deion Sanders has brought to the program means more reunions with teammates as they pass through town. "I've been through many years where nobody comes to visit," Bloom said. "It's fun that Boulder has become the epicenter of college football." Leading the way for Colorado this season have been quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way star Hunter, who's the Heisman Trophy frontrunner. But what particularly pleases Bloom is that Sanders, Hunter and the rest of college football players are able to finally profit through name, image and likeness. In his day, Bloom got caught in the NCAA crosshairs for wanting to play both sports and to have sponsors in one (skiing) so he could fund his Olympic aspirations. How time have changed. "I'm just really grateful that this generation of athletes gets to monetize their skills and ability," said Bloom, who finished sixth in moguls at the 2006 Winter Games in Italy. "It's the right thing." He's thrown his passion into fulfilling wishes such as learning ballet, riding in a Formula 1 pace car or taking a flight in a fighter jet. He's also helped reconnect families and friends, including a reunion for a trio of centenarian sisters who hadn't seen each other in more than a decade. This granted wish has stuck with Bloom: A person in Alabama wasn't able to travel after being diagnosed with end-of-life emphysema. So he asked for postcards to be sent, just to learn what made someone's town so special. He received 2,000 postcards from 26 different countries. "There's no end to the things that they've done for us in the world," Bloom said of older adults. "We're one of the organizations that reminds them that their dreams still do matter and that we still appreciate them and we cherish them."

The white-bearded Christian saint whose acts of generosity inspired America’s secular Santa Claus figure is known worldwide — but Saint Nicholas’ origin story is not. The legends surrounding jolly old St. Nicholas — celebrated annually on Dec. 6 — go way beyond delivering candy and toys to children. St. Nicholas was a fourth century Christian bishop from the Mediterranean port city of Myra (in modern-day Turkey). “Much of the rest is legend. There’s not really a lot of hard historical evidence about St. Nicholas,” said the Rev. Nicholas Ayo, author of “Saint Nicholas in America: Christmas Holy Day and Holiday.” But whether the stories are true is not so much the point, said Ayo, an 89-year-old retired Notre Dame University professor named after St. Nicholas. “There’s no Santa Claus that lands on the roof, but there’s a desire in people’s heart for an unconditional love that doesn’t depend on your behavior, but the fact that you’re somebody’s child.” Devotion to St. Nicholas — also referred to as St. Nick — spread during the Middle Ages across Europe and he became a favorite subject for medieval artists and liturgical plays, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. He is the patron saint of Greece and Russia, Moscow and New York, as well as charities, children and pawnbrokers. He also is the patron saint of sailors. In 1807, Italian sailors took the remains of St. Nicholas from Myra to the seaport of Bari, on the southeast coast of the boot of Italy. They built a church in his honor; relics believed to be his are kept in Bari’s 11th century basilica of San Nicola. St. Nicholas Day is celebrated every year on Dec. 6, typically by filling the stockings and shoes children leave out overnight with sweets and toys. It also is a fitting date for the patron saint of sailors. “The December feast day of Saint Nicholas coincides with the beginning of the winter storm season on the Mediterranean,” Ayo wrote. Legends surrounding St. Nicholas’ generosity appear in texts ranging from medieval manuscripts to modern-day poems, including how he interceded on behalf of wrongly condemned prisoners and miraculously saved sailors from storms. One of the most famous legends, Ayo said, features the aging father of three young women who didn’t have means to pay for their dowry. St. Nicholas is said to have thrown gold pieces into the man’s window. “It is the quintessential Nicholas,” Ayo wrote. “It requires no miracle, no credulity from the hearer, and no superstition at any level. What is needed is only a generous heart ready to give of his wealth in a self-effacing way that others may come to know a deep love in their life.” k inspired Santa Devotion to St. Nicholas seems to have faded after the 16th century Protestant Reformation, except in the Netherlands where his legend remained as Sinterklaas. In the 17th century, Dutch Protestants who settled in New York brought the Sinterklaas tradition with them. “The Dutch had St. Nicholas on the bow of the first ship that went into New York harbor,” Ayo said. Eventually, St. Nicholas morphed into the secular Santa Claus. Artist Thomas Nast, an engraver in Morristown, New Jersey, who illustrated the front cover of Harper’s magazine for many years, played a key role in the transformation, Ayo said. “He followed the description of Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas — and Clement Clarke Moore’s ‘Twas the Night before Christmas’ poem,” Ayo said. “So, that’s how that got changed. But in Europe, the bishop shows up in bishop’s clothing at the door sometimes.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!By JOSH BOAK WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday voiced his support for the dockworkers union before their contract expires next month at Eastern and Gulf Coast ports, saying that any further “automation” of the ports would harm workers. The president-elect wrote on the appointment: “He will work on a legal framework so the Crypto industry has the clarity it has been asking for and can thrive in the U.S. David will also lead the Presidential Council of Advisors for Science and Technology...” Also, a crypto advocate, Paul Atkins, has been nominated to lead the US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC). The appointment of David Sacks as the “White House AI and Crypto Czar” by President-elect Donald Trump is seen as a significant move towards a more crypto-friendly regulatory environment in the U.S. “I am pleased to announce that David O. Sacks will be the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar.” Sacks is expected to work on creating a legal framework that provides clarity for the crypto industry, which has been a long-standing demand from the sector. “He will work on a legal framework so the Crypto industry has the clarity it has been asking for and can thrive in the U.S. David will also lead the Presidential Council of Advisors for Science and Technology...” Trump wrote. This appointment, along with the nomination of Paul Atkins , a known crypto advocate, to lead the SEC, signals a shift towards more supportive policies for cryptocurrencies. The aim is to make the U.S. a leader in both AI and crypto technologies, ensuring that these industries can thrive with clear and favorable regulations. Simply, there is a huge convergence here with many nice things happening for the crypto industry. Now the concern: is there a chance that the exuberance will break the market, triggering an economic collapse because everyone will be buying crypto, and no one will give companies money to build products and services which fix frictions in communities? Simply, these things may not turn out well. Remember 2007 and 2008 when everyone in Nigeria was a stock trader, and how it ended. Extrapolate that to Americas and the world. My message is clear: shine your eyes! I am calling a market crash by Q2 2026, mainly by looking at how humans pursued stocks in 2007 and ended us burnt. Crypto will drive this upcoming episode, not because crypto is defective, but rather, the greed to win via crypto will starve capital on productive systems that will trigger a massive economic disequilibrium. It seems that Threads is still a little spooked by the sudden rise of Bluesky , with the Meta-owned app now copying another Bluesky element in “Starter Packs”. On Bluesky, Starter Packs are curated, topic-based lists of people to follow, which are designed to make it easier for newcomers to populate their feed. And while Threads isn’t calling its version “Starter Packs” it may as well. As you can see in these examples, Threads’ take own Starter Packs will be shown to new users, and within your “For You” feed, and will recommend listings that have been curated by Threads users. As explained by Threads : “ Starting this week, you may see occasional suggestions to follow multiple profiles from custom feeds curated by a few members of the Threads community in the U.S. We’re testing this experience with a small number of threaders to start, but everyone on Threads in the U.S. will be able to see and follow the profiles included in these collections. ” It’s essentially what Twitter users would know as “Lists”, which makes it easier to find users to follow based on a topic, and can be very helpful in building your initial in-app experience. And with Threads now also letting some users default to the “Following” feed (also like Bluesky), following the right profiles becomes even more important, as opposed to relying on the algorithm to show you content that you might like via the “For You” display. So it does make sense for Threads to add custom lists, while it also recently added the option to swipe across to alternative, custom feeds from the main UI, making it even easier to access and utilize this element. There’s definitely practical value here, but it is interesting to see just how freaked out Threads is about Bluesky, to the point that it’s replicating virtually all of Bluesky’s features to dilute any potential competition. Which is a tactic that Meta has used repeatedly to do exactly that. Replicating Snapchat’s Stories feature on Instagram, for example, halted Snapchat’s growth for some time , while replicating TikTok, with Reels, also seems to have slowed TikTok’s expansion , especially among older users. So it works, but while Bluesky has seen a rise of late, it only has 24 million users in total , versus 275 million on Threads . So Threads isn’t even giving Bluesky much of a chance to gain traction, before nullifying it through replication. I guess, if Meta wants to become the leader in the real-time social space, it needs to fend off any potential competitor, but really, Bluesky’s going to have enough of its own troubles growing to even make it far enough to be a real threat in this respect. So, Meta’s looking to kill off Bluesky, with almost all of Bluesky’s features now available on Threads as well. Though one of the real lures of Bluesky, for key proponents at least, is that Bluesky doesn’t penalize links , and encourages discussion on any topic. Threads is not overly friendly to link posts , while it also actively restricts political speech . If Threads changes these elements, that would be a big step in really negating Bluesky’s expansion.Father Fidelis Mukonori, who was Robert Mugabe’s long-time confidante, has stressed the importance of mediation, negotiation, and dialogue as crucial skills for young people involved in politics. He made these remarks during the launch of the Youth Council for Peace and Development at a local hotel in Bulawayo on December 11, 2024. The event was hosted by the 4-H Zimbabwe Foundation and brought together youth representatives from 11 political parties, including ZANU-PF, MDC Alliance, CCC, DOP, NCA, Free Zim, UANC, NPC, ZIPP, UZA, and ZCPD. The launch marked a significant step in promoting peace-building and dialogue among Zimbabwe’s young political leaders. In his address, Father Mukonori emphasized that developing these skills is essential for fostering long-term peace and preventing conflict in Zimbabwe. He said, “Young people must develop the skills of mediation, negotiation, and dialogue, understanding their role in building sustainable peace. It is vital that you actively participate in local and national peace-building initiatives.” He highlighted that such skills are necessary for creating an environment of peace and ensuring the absence of conflict within the country. Father Mukonori urged young people to use their platforms to promote peaceful resolutions to challenges and contribute positively to Zimbabwe’s development. The launch was also attended by former National Peace and Reconciliation Commissioner, Dr. Tinashe Rukuni, Zimbabwe’s Attorney General, Mrs. Virginia Mabiza (represented by Executive Secretary Mr. Johane Gandiwa), and Father Mukonori, who is also a member of the Zimbabwe National Elders Forum Board. This initiative, which seeks to bring together youth from various political backgrounds, aims to promote dialogue, encourage peaceful resolutions to challenges, and contribute to Zimbabwe’s overall development. It marks a pivotal moment in the country’s ongoing efforts to unite its citizens across political divides for the greater good. The Youth Council for Peace and Development will provide young leaders with a platform to address key issues such as social justice, economic development, and national unity. By encouraging collaboration among youth leaders, the initiative aims to lay the foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future for Zimbabwe. With this groundbreaking initiative, Zimbabwe is taking a significant step toward an inclusive and peaceful future, placing its youth at the forefront of the nation’s development and conflict resolution efforts. ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec 12, 2024-- Conversion rates on a 3rd and 1 hover near 60-70%. When a pre snap penalty occurs on the O-line, the percentage plummets below 40% for the replayed down. AIQ’s latest peer-reviewed research paper dives deep into the intellectual and athletic performance of offensive linemen and is making waves in the world of football analytics. As the NFL playoff race heats up and fans prepare for the 2025 draft in Green Bay, front-office staff are turning to data to stay ahead in a fast-evolving landscape. Teams need actionable insights to identify hidden gems that could transform their franchise. Decision-makers are looking for tools that cut through the noise and deliver clear answers—especially when it comes to draft choices. AIQ understands what’s at stake, providing needed insight with its latest peer-reviewed research paper, "The Relationships Between Reaction Time Scores and False Start Penalties of Offensive Linemen in the National Football League (NFL)." This peer-reviewed research provides groundbreaking insights into a critical player group: offensive linemen. These athletes form the backbone of every offensive play, ensuring protection and creating opportunities for their teammates. Yet, their contributions and potential often fly under the radar. As AIQ co-founder Jim Bowman, Psy.D. and his fellow researchers explain in the paper, “While offensive linemen may be less well known to fans than other NFL players, they are critical to a team’s success, because they provide offensive players the necessary protection and time to execute winning plays.” The research shows how reaction time scores directly relate to false start penalties, giving teams a clear game plan to spot linemen who thrive under pressure. Teams can use these insights to: To address this, AIQ’s research takes a unique approach by correlating intelligence scores—specifically from the AIQ assessment—with performance metrics like false start penalties. The results reveal actionable strategies for reducing errors and optimizing O-line performance. The offensive line is often the unsung hero of a team’s success. Size, speed, and strength are important—but there’s more to the story. That’s why AIQ digs deeper into the mental game. Skills like reaction time, decision-making, and learning efficiency are what set great linemen apart. Those split-second decisions in the red zone? They can be the difference between a costly penalty that pushes the down and distance back or a play that changes the game. AIQ leveraged decades of scientific study and its proprietary assessment tool, developed over 15 years and validated with data from 12,000+ elite athletes, including everyone from Olympians to NFL players. This tool evaluates intelligence across four critical areas: With a database encompassing over 93% of each year’s NFL Draft class, AIQ offers a statistically robust, peer-reviewed foundation for its insights. AIQ is the only intelligence assessment scientifically proven to impact NFL performance. Its tools work alongside traditional evaluations to give teams a full picture of their players and prospects. According to AIQ co-founder Scott Goldman, Ph.D., it’s all about helping decision-makers build rosters that keep up with the fast-changing game. “AIQ is the only instrument scientifically proven to impact NFL performance,” Goldman says. “We provide more task-specific details designed for today’s NFL game than any other product available.” The company has shared that a fifth peer-reviewed research article, focusing on quarterback performance, will be published and available soon. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement was pending a physical. ESPN first reported the move. The 29-year-old Adames is coming off his best offensive season in the big leagues after hitting .251 with a career-high 32 homers and 112 RBIs with the Milwaukee Brewers. Georgia QB Carson Beck knocked out by hand injury in SEC championship game against Texas ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia quarterback Carson Beck will not return after he was hit on his throwing hand on the final play of an ugly first half in the Southeastern Conference championship game against Texas. Beck was hit by outside linebacker Trey Moore, forcing a fumble recovered by Anthony Hill Jr., who then lost the ball on an errant attempt to extend the play with a lateral as time expired. Beck was one of the last players to return to the field following halftime. Backup Gunner Stockton led the offense to a touchdown on the Bulldogs’ first drive of the second half. Arizona State makes College Football Playoff with 45-19 win over Iowa State in Big 12 title game ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Big 12 newcomer Arizona State will represent the conference in the 12-team College Football Playoff. Cam Skattebo ran for 170 yards and two scores while adding a touchdown catch the 12th-ranked Sun Devils beat No. 16 Iowa State 45-19 in the Big 12 championship game. The Sun Devils with 34-year-old head coach Kenny Dillingham are 11-2 after being the preseason pick to finish at the bottom of their new 16-team league. They have won six games in a row. Iowa State is 10-3, already the first 10-win season in the program's 133-year history. LA Galaxy strike early, hold off New York Red Bulls 2-1 to win their record 6th MLS Cup championship CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Joseph Paintsil and Dejan Joveljic scored in the first half, and the LA Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes with goals from their star forwards, the Galaxy nursed a lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league’s biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable charge through the playoffs ended one win shy of the founding MLS franchise’s first Cup championship. No. 16 Iowa State falls short in Big 12 title game again, this time with CFP at stake ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The stakes were higher for Iowa State, and the outcome was the same as the first for the Cyclones in their second trip to the Big 12 championship game. And the 112-year wait for a conference title will go on. No. 16 Iowa State was playing for a spot in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff in a 45-19 loss to 12th-ranked Arizona State. Four years ago, neither Iowa State nor Oklahoma had a realistic path into the four-team tournament before the Sooners' 27-21 victory. The Cyclones haven't won a conference title since going 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1912. Big 12's Yormark brings up hard choices for fans before sparsely attended title game ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — College football fans are facing some hard choices in the expanded playoff system with some teams set to play away from home multiple times. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark raised that point No. 12 Arizona State's 45-19 victory over 16th-ranked Iowa State. The announced crowd of 55,889 at the home of the Dallas Cowboys appeared far smaller. Yormark says he remains committed to having a Big 12 title game. Besides the issues of fans, there have been suggestions that some leagues might be better off without title games as it relates to playoff hopes. Lindsey Vonn competes in a pair of downhills, another step on her comeback trail at the age of 40 COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. (AP) — Lindsey Vonn finished in the middle of the pack in a pair of lower-level downhill events as she competed for the first time in nearly six years. The 40-year-old Vonn is on the comeback trail after stepping away from the sport because of injuries. Vonn wasn't concerned with times and places in the races so much as getting used to the speed again and gaining the necessary points to compete on the World Cup circuit. Vonn accomplished both, finishing 24th in the first downhill race of the day and 27th in the second. She posted on social media after the FIS races she had enough points to enter World Cup events. Justin Thomas with big drives and a few big putts takes 1-shot lead over Scheffler in the Bahamas NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Justin Thomas has a one-shot lead over Scottie Scheffler going into the final round of the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. Thomas is using a slightly longer driver and has been blasting away. He also was helped by two long putts on the back nine that carried him to 66 at windy Albany Golf Club. Scheffler muffed a chip on the 13th hole that cost him the lead and he never caught up. He still shot a 69 and will be in the last group with Thomas on Sunday. Tom Kim had a 62 and was two shots back. Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy gets restructured deal after 3-9 season, according to reports Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy will be staying on with a restructured deal. That's according to news reports published on Saturday. The deal reportedly will shift some of his salary to revenue sharing with players. The Cowboys were among the preseason favorites in the Big 12, but a rash of injuries and problems at quarterback tanked the team, and the Cowboys went 3-9. The school's Board of Regents held a special meeting on Friday morning regarding his status, but no immediate action was taken. The fact that Gundy has 169 wins in 20 years plus a hefty buyout likely saved him from being fired outright. Norris takes pole for season-ending Abu Dhabi GP and Hamilton 18th in Mercedes farewell ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Lando Norris took pole position for the last Formula 1 race of the season alongside teammate Oscar Piastri to put McLaren on the verge of a first constructors’ title in 26 years. Norris’ last lap put him .209 of a second faster than Piastri, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. .020 further back. Seven-time F1 champion Hamilton qualified 18th for his last race with Mercedes after a bizarre incident wrecked his final qualifying lap. A plastic pole marking the inside of a corner was knocked loose by Kevin Magnussen’s Haas and Hamilton drove over it.

The advent of humanoid robots is on the horizon, with projections suggesting they will begin to occupy warehouse spaces, car manufacturing plants, and possibly even our homes by 2025. However, their widespread adoption remains uncertain. Unlike traditional machines in use today —comprising either single arms executing repetitive tasks or wheeled robots traversing warehouse floors—these advanced robots bear a human-like appearance, complete with two arms and legs. Their design enables them to integrate more seamlessly into environments originally configured for human beings. This ambitious endeavor hinges significantly on advancements in artificial intelligence, which is crucial for their operation in complex settings. Agility Robotics has already begun introducing its cutting-edge robot, Digit, into warehouse settings. The company envisions these humanoid robots revolutionizing industries by enhancing efficiency and adaptability in areas traditionally managed by humans. The potential for these nimble robots is vast, but the sector faces challenges, principally enhancing AI capabilities to mimic human dexterity and decision-making. The progress made so far, however, demonstrates promising strides toward achieving this goal. In a world increasingly leaning toward automation, the emergence of humanoid robots marks a pivotal shift. Whether they will claim a dominant position in our industrial and domestic landscapes is a question whose answer lies in the advancements of the upcoming years. This technological leap could redefine how work is performed, forging a new relationship between humans and machines. The Future is Now: Humanoid Robots Set to Transform Industries by 2025 As we approach 2025, the integration of humanoid robots into industries such as warehousing and manufacturing is highly anticipated. Although the timeline for widespread adoption remains uncertain, the implications of this technology are profound and transformative. Humanoid robots, unlike the traditional machines currently prevalent, are designed to mirror human anatomy with two arms and legs, making them exceptionally suited for environments traditionally designed for human operation. This innovative design is contingent on breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, allowing robots to perform complex tasks that require human-like dexterity and decision-making. Trends and Innovations: One of the frontrunners in this technological advancement, Agility Robotics, has already started deploying its humanoid robot, Digit, in warehouse environments. With a vision of revolutionizing industries, the company capitalizes on the efficiencies and adaptability that humanoid robots can bring to roles traditionally occupied by humans. This innovation not only enhances operational efficiency but also introduces the potential for workers to focus on more complex tasks that require human intuition. Use Cases and Applications: Humanoid robots are ideally suited for various applications beyond the warehouse floor. In automotive manufacturing, they could handle intricate assembly tasks that demand precision and coordination. At home, these robots have the potential to assist with daily chores, providing invaluable support to aging populations or individuals with disabilities. Challenges and Limitations: While the potential for humanoid robots is expansive, significant hurdles remain, chiefly related to advancing AI to replicate the nuanced dexterity and cognitive abilities of human workers. Current AI technology, while advanced, has yet to fully master the complexity of human-like decision-making required in dynamic and unpredictable environments. Comparisons and Market Analysis: As the market for humanoid robots begins to develop, a comparison with traditional automation solutions reveals exciting possibilities. Unlike single-purpose machines, humanoid robots offer versatility and adaptability, catering to a broader range of applications with minimal environmental disruption. The market is poised for growth, influenced by advancements in AI, machine learning, and robotics. Predictions and Insights: Experts predict that if AI capabilities continue to advance at the current pace, humanoid robots will become integral to industrial and possibly domestic landscapes within the next decade. This technological leap could redefine labor dynamics, fostering a synergetic relationship between humans and machines. For those interested in learning more about the evolution and integration of humanoid robots into various industries, visit the Agility Robotics website for updates and insights on their latest developments. As we stand on the brink of this technological era, the fusion of human-like robots into our everyday lives could mark a significant evolution in how work and tasks are approached, illuminating a new frontier in human-machine collaboration.WASHINGTON — Mitch McConnell’s decision to head the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense will give the outgoing GOP leader sweeping influence on funding for personnel, operations, equipment and modernization efforts across the U.S. military. It will also mean that Kentucky’s major military bases — including Fort Knox, Fort Campbell and the Blue Grass Army Depot — are likely to reap benefits from the senior senator’s oversight of hundreds of billions of dollars. “McConnell’s clearly indicating the priority he puts on defense appropriations,” said John Bolton, who served as national security adviser in the first Trump administration in an interview Friday. “I’m very happy to hear that.” In describing the current threat to America as the “gravest...since the Second World War,” McConnell said he welcomed the responsibility to mold the future of U.S. national security. “I intend to play an active role in this urgent mission as Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, and I look forward to working closely with incoming Chair Susan Collins to accomplish our shared goal,” McConnell said. McConnell had been contemplating a move to chair the Senate Appropriations Committee once he formally relinquishes his role as leader next year, but decided he could still wield ample power in this subcommittee role under the appropriations umbrella. The subcommittee’s work is critical in responding to evolving global threats, particularly from nations like China and Russia. It allocates funds for advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and hypersonic weapons. The role is often in tension with the president’s defense budget request. For instance, this year’s Senate bill for military appropriations included $852 billion in funding, exceeding President Biden’s proposal by $2.4 billion. McConnell has consistently argued that defense allocations are too low, a point of contention that could set up another clash with President-elect Donald Trump, who campaigned on ending foreign involvement in wars overseas, like Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. But Bolton expects McConnell to stand as a bulwark against the isolationist tendencies in his party. The defense budget is “inadequate,” in the eyes of military hawks like Bolton, who said, “McConnell undoubtedly sees that and that’s what he’ll try to fix.” McConnell’s seniority on Capitol Hill has long benefited Kentucky’s military installations. The Blue Grass Army Depot, a storage facility located about 40 miles south of Lexington, has received more than $4 billion to complete one of its missions of destroying dangerous chemical materials. As a major employer of 1,450 people that pays some of the highest wages in the region, the army depot is crucial to the economic vitality of Madison County. McConnell has also directed significant resources to Fort Campbell, securing $135 million for the renovation of the nearly 50-year-old barracks and $38 million for the construction of a large-scale vehicle and aerial gunnery training range over the last year. In 2019, he helped secure $26 million for a new range at Fort Knox designed to enhance training and operational readiness for military units. The following year, the U.S. Army announced Fort Knox as its headquarters for its V Corps, a unit designed for military deployments across Europe. “As Leader, Mr. McConnell was a master of the Senate on par with LBJ,” said Austin Durrer, a former senior adviser to members on the House Defense Subcommittee on Appropriations. “I suspect he’ll carry a big stick as Chair of Defense Appropriations, benefiting both his home state and national defense priorities writ large.” ©2024 McClatchy Washington Bureau. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Friday that it has approved an injectable version of Bristol Myers Squibb’s BMY-N blockbuster cancer drug, Opdivo. Opdivo is part of a class of drugs called PD-1 inhibitors, which enhance the immune system’s ability to fight cancer by removing its natural brakes. Like other PD-1 drugs such as Merck’s Keytruda, it was previously available through infusions and patients received it via an intravenous drip in a health office. The new injectable form is expected to be more convenient for patients and could help shield the company from erosion of sales when the patent for the intravenous version expires later this decade. The injection, branded as Opdivo Qvantig, has been approved to treat all previously approved adult, solid tumor indications, either on its own, as maintenance therapy or in combination with chemotherapy. The drug will be available in early January, and will be priced at parity with the list price of the IV version, Adam Lenkowsky, Bristol’s chief commercialization officer, told Reuters ahead of the approval. The IV version of the drug has a list price of $7,635 per infusion for two weeks for the lower dose and $15,269 per infusion for four weeks for the higher 480-milligram dose. The approval was based on data from a late-stage study, which showed that the subcutaneous form of the drug was not inferior to the intravenous formulation in patients with advanced kidney cancer who have received prior systemic therapy. The drugmaker is relying on newer treatments like Opdivo Qvantig to drive growth as patents on older drugs, such as cancer drug Revlimid and blood thinner Eliquis, expire later this decade. Opdivo Qvantig was co-formulated with Halozyme Therapeutics’ drug delivery technology, which helps reduce treatment administration from hours-long IV infusions to subcutaneous injections delivered in minutes.

Donald Trump said Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has asked to visit him at the president-elect's Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. Part way through a Truth Social post on Friday morning, Trump referred to his Mar-a-Lago home, saying "Bill Gates asked to come, tonight. We miss you and x! New Year's Eve is going to be AMAZING!!! DJT." Trump provided no further details. Emails and calls to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation asking about a potential Gates visit to Mar-a-Lago were not immediately answered. Gates has been critical of Trump in the past, particularly over his first administration's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Gates publicly congratulated Trump on his November 5 election victory and expressed hope they could work together. Some of the biggest tech sector companies in the US have pledged donations to Trump's inaugural fund as they seek more favourable relations with the Republican president-elect before he takes office on January 20. In November, Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Meta has donated $US1 million ($A1.6 million) to Trump's inaugural fund, a company spokesperson told Reuters on December 12. Other tech companies that are donating $US1 million ($A1.6 million) to Trump's inaugural fund include Amazon and Uber Technologies .

Parliament approved the new administration in a 240-143 vote in Romania’s 466-seat legislature. The new coalition is made up of the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD) the centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party and national minorities. It caps a month-long period of turmoil in which far-right nationalists made significant gains in a parliamentary election on December 1 a week after a first-round presidential race saw the far-right outsider Calin Georgescu emerge as the front-runner. “It will not be an easy mandate for the future government,” Mr Ciolacu, whose PSD party topped the polls in the parliamentary election, said in a statement. “We are aware that we are in the midst of a deep political crisis,” he said. “It is also a crisis of trust, and this coalition aims to regain the trust of citizens, the trust of the people.” Romania’s 16 ministerial positions will be shared among the parties, which will hold a slim majority in the legislature. It is widely seen as a tactical partnership to shut out far-right nationalists whose voices found fertile ground amid high living costs and a sluggish economy. Mr Ciolacu, who came third in the first-round presidential ballot despite polls indicating he would win the most votes, has served as prime minister since June 2023. After parliament’s approval, President Klaus Iohannis swore in the new government and warned the new Cabinet that it is entering a “difficult new period” in which “for many Romanians, there are major concerns”. Romania was plunged into turmoil after Mr Georgescu’s surprise success in the presidential race, after allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference emerged. Days before the December 8 run-off, the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the presidential race. “We go through complicated times, but I think we all learned from mistakes of the past,” Mr Ciolacu said. “I hope that together with my colleagues in the coalition, we’ll find the best solutions to get past the challenges we have in front of us.” Mr Ciolacu said that the new government would aim to quickly organise the rerun of the presidential election in which the new coalition has agreed to put forward an agreed common pro-European candidate. Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, said that the new government made up of the same political parties will likely embrace “soft populist” rhetoric such as economic patriotism, anti-austerity, and a peace solution in neighbouring Ukraine to counter the rise of far-right populism. “This will be a way to answer the concerns of many Romanians who voted for populists... but will not solve the fundamental problem of trust,” he said. “The only decisive factor now will be who and how convincing the pro-European candidates will be against this popular revolt.” George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, which came second in the parliamentary election, said that all politicians from his party on Monday would vote against the Ciolacu government. In 2021, the PSD and the PNL also formed an unlikely but increasingly strained coalition together with UDMR, which exited the Cabinet last year after a power-sharing dispute.

Recently, a diss track has gained online attention and gone viral for exposing several popular musicians. On December 5, Korean rapper Heena shared a new music video titled “수박가슴 (watermelon tits).” The musician has a smaller subscription base but has already gained around 18 thousand views in just two days on the track due to its content. The track begins with a voicemail alleged to be rapper Jiho Givenchy , a controversial rapper and influencer known for his appearances on Show Me The Money. He tells Heena not to needlessly talk about him to other people because he would find out. Heena almost instantly jumps into exposing other musicians, claiming that producer and rapper Laptopboyboy (better known as Futuristic Swaver ) sexually harassed her in direct messages. She also claims that he bragged about having sex with a fan who was a minor that ended her life afterward out of shame. Stock market today: Wall Street inches higher to set more recordsGreg Gumbel, a longtime CBS sportscaster, has died from cancer, according to a statement from family released by CBS on Friday. He was 78. “He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten,” his wife Marcy Gumbel and daughter Michelle Gumbel said in a statement. In March, Gumbel missed his first NCAA Tournament since 1997 due to what he said at the time were family health issues. Gumbel was the studio host for CBS since returning to the network from NBC in 1998. Gumbel signed an extension with CBS last year that allowed him to continue hosting college basketball while stepping back from NFL announcing duties. In 2001, he announced Super Bowl XXXV for CBS, becoming the first Black announcer in the U.S. to call play-by-play of a major sports championship. David Berson, president and CEO of CBS Sports, described Gumbel as breaking barriers and setting standards for others during his years as a voice for fans in sports, including in the NFL and March Madness. “A tremendous broadcaster and gifted storyteller, Greg led one of the most remarkable and groundbreaking sports broadcasting careers of all time," said Berson. Gumbel had two stints at CBS, leaving the network for NBC when it lost football in 1994 and returning when it regained the contract in 1998. He hosted CBS’ coverage of the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics and called Major League Baseball games during its four-year run broadcasting the national pastime. In 1995, he hosted the World Figure Skating Championships and the following year hosted NBC’s daytime coverage of the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. But it was football and basketball where he was best known and made his biggest impact. Gumbel hosted CBS’ NFL studio show, “The NFL Today” from 1990 to 1993 and again in 2004. He also called NFL games as the network’s lead play-by-play announcer from 1998 to 2003, including Super Bowl XXXV and XXXVIII. He returned to the NFL booth in 2005, leaving that role after the 2022 season. “Like all who knew and loved him, I too am saddened by his death, yet also so very grateful to have known him in my life,” Clark Kellogg, a CBS Sports college basketball game and studio analyst, said in a statement. “What a gift to be touched by such a good man and partner.” Gumbel, the older brother of sportscaster Bryant Gumbel, grew up in Chicago and graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1967 with a degree in English. He won local Emmy Awards during his long career and was the recipient of the 2007 Pat Summerall Award for excellence in sports broadcasting. Outside of his career as a sportscaster, he was affiliated with the March of Dimes for three decades, including as a member of its board of trustees. He also was a member of the Sports Council for St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital for 16 years. Associated Press reporter Mike Sisak contributed.

The Switch To Renewable Energy In The US Faces Numerous ChallengesThe House shut down Democrats' efforts Thursday to release the long-awaited ethics report into former Rep. Matt Gaetz, pushing the fate of any resolution to the yearslong investigation of sexual misconduct allegations into further uncertainty. Related video above: Matt Gaetz withdraws attorney general nomination The nearly party-line votes came after Democrats had been pressing for the findings to be published even though the Florida Republican left Congress and withdrew as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general. Republicans have argued that any congressional probe into Gaetz ended when he resigned from the House. Speaker Mike Johnson also requested that the committee not publish its report, saying it would be a terrible precedent to set. While ethics reports have previously been released after a member’s resignation, it is extremely rare. Shortly before the votes took place, Rep. Sean Casten, D-Ill., who introduced one of the bills to force the release, said that if Republicans reject the release, they will have “succeeded in sweeping credible allegations of sexual misconduct under the rug.” Gaetz has repeatedly denied the claims. Earlier Thursday, the Ethics panel met to discuss the Gaetz report but made no decision, saying in a short statement that the matter is still being discussed. It's unclear now whether the document will ever see the light of day as lawmakers only have a few weeks left before a new session of Congress begins. It's the culmination of weeks of pressure on the Ethics committee's five Republicans and five Democrats who mostly work in secret as they investigate allegations of misconduct against lawmakers. The status of the Gaetz investigation became an open question last month when he abruptly resigned from Congress after Trump's announcement that he wanted his ally in the Cabinet. It is standard practice for the committee to end investigations when members of Congress depart, but the circumstances surrounding Gaetz were unusual, given his potential role in the new administration. Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., the committee chairman, said Wednesday that there is no longer the same urgency to release the report given that Gaetz has left Congress and stepped aside as Trump's choice to head the Justice Department. “I’ve been steadfast about that. He’s no longer a member. He is no longer going to be confirmed by the Senate because he withdrew his nomination to be the attorney general,” Guest said. The Gaetz report has also caused tensions between lawmakers on the bipartisan committee. Pennsylvania Rep. Susan Wild, the top Democrat on the panel, publicly admonished Guest last month for mischaracterizing a previous meeting to the press. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and said last year that the Justice Department’s separate investigation against him into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls ended without federal charges. His onetime political ally Joel Greenberg, a fellow Republican who served as the tax collector in Florida’s Seminole County, admitted as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in 2021 that he paid women and an underage girl to have sex with him and other men. The men were not identified in court documents when he pleaded guilty. Greenberg was sentenced in late 2022 to 11 years in prison.

(NYSE: ZUO), a leading monetization suite for modern business, today announced financial results for its fiscal third quarter ended October 31, 2024. Third Quarter Fiscal 2025 Financial Results: Descriptions of our non-GAAP financial measures are contained in the section titled "Explanation of Non-GAAP Financial Measures" below and reconciliations of GAAP and non-GAAP financial measures are contained in the tables below. Proposed Acquisition; Conference Call and Guidance On October 17, 2024, we announced that Zuora entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Silver Lake, the global leader in technology investing, in partnership with an affiliate of GIC Pte. Ltd. (“GIC”). The transaction is valued at $1.7 billion, with Silver Lake and GIC to acquire all outstanding shares of Zuora common stock for $10.00 per share in cash. The acquisition is expected to close in the first calendar quarter of 2024, subject to customary closing conditions and approvals, including the receipt of the required regulatory approvals. Upon completion of the transaction, Zuora will become a privately held company. Given the proposed acquisition of Zuora, we will not be holding a conference call or live webcast to discuss Zuora's third quarter of fiscal 2025 financial results, we will not be providing any forward looking guidance, and we are withdrawing all previously provided goals, outlook, and guidance. Key Operational and Financial Metrics: Explanation of Key Operational and Financial Metrics: Annual Contract Value (ACV) . We define ACV as the subscription revenue we would contractually expect to recognize from a customer over the next twelve months, assuming no increases or reductions in their subscriptions. We define the number of customers at the end of any particular period as the number of parties or organizations that have entered into a distinct subscription contract with us and for which the term has not ended. Each party with whom we have entered into a distinct subscription contract is considered a unique customer, and in some cases, there may be more than one customer within a single organization. Dollar-based Retention Rate (DBRR) . We calculate DBRR as of a period end by starting with the sum of the ACV from all customers as of twelve months prior to such period end, or prior period ACV. We then calculate the sum of the ACV from these same customers as of the current period end, or current period ACV. Current period ACV includes any upsells and also reflects contraction or attrition over the trailing twelve months but excludes revenue from new customers added in the current period. We then divide the current period ACV by the prior period ACV to arrive at our dollar-based retention rate. Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR). ARR represents the annualized recurring value at the time of initial booking or contract modification for all active subscription contracts at the end of a reporting period. ARR excludes the value of non-recurring revenue such as professional services revenue as well as contracts with new customers with a term of less than one year. ARR should be viewed independently of revenue and deferred revenue, and is not intended to be a substitute for, or combined with, any of these items. ARR growth is calculated by dividing the ARR as of a period end by the ARR for the corresponding period end of the prior fiscal year. Explanation of Non-GAAP Financial Measures: In addition to financial measures prepared in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), this press release and the accompanying tables contain non-GAAP financial measures including: non-GAAP cost of subscription revenue; non-GAAP subscription gross margin; non-GAAP cost of professional services revenue; non-GAAP professional services gross margin; non-GAAP gross profit; non-GAAP gross margin; non-GAAP income from operations; non-GAAP operating margin; non-GAAP net income; non-GAAP net income per share; and adjusted free cash flow. The presentation of these financial measures is not intended to be considered in isolation or as a substitute for, or superior to, financial information prepared and presented in accordance with GAAP. We use non-GAAP financial measures in conjunction with GAAP measures as part of our overall assessment of our performance, including the preparation of our annual operating budget and quarterly forecasts, to evaluate the effectiveness of our business strategies and to communicate with our Board of Directors concerning our financial performance. We believe these non-GAAP measures provide investors consistency and comparability with our past financial performance and facilitate period-to-period comparisons of our operating results. We also believe these non-GAAP measures are useful in evaluating our operating performance compared to that of other companies in our industry, as they generally eliminate the effects of certain items that may vary for different companies for reasons unrelated to overall operating performance. We exclude the following items from one or more of our non-GAAP financial measures: Additionally, we disclose "adjusted free cash flow", which is a non-GAAP measure that includes adjustments to operating cash flows for cash impacts related to Shareholder matters and Acquisition-related expenses described above, and net purchases of property and equipment. We include the impact of net purchases of property and equipment in our adjusted free cash flow calculation because we consider these capital expenditures to be a necessary component of our ongoing operations. We believe this measure is meaningful to investors because management reviews cash flows generated from operations excluding such expenditures that are not related to our ongoing operations. Investors are cautioned that there are material limitations associated with the use of non-GAAP financial measures as an analytical tool. The non-GAAP measures we use may be different from non-GAAP financial measures used by other companies, limiting their usefulness for comparison purposes. We compensate for these limitations by providing specific information regarding the GAAP items excluded from these non-GAAP financial measures. Allison Robbert | Getty Images Tesla CEO Elon Musk lost his bid to get his 2018 CEO pay package reinstated on Monday when a Delaware judge upheld her prior ruling that the compensation plan was improperly granted. The package, worth about $56 billion, was the largest compensation plan in U.S. history for a public company executive. Musk attorneys attempted to sway the judge in the Delaware business court after the trial to reverse her opinion rescinding the CEO's pay plan. Tesla had conducted a shareholder vote to "ratify" Musk's 2018 pay plan at the EV maker's annual shareholder meeting in Austin, Texas, in June. Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick wrote in her opinion on Monday that, "Even if a stockholder vote could have a ratifying effect, it could not do so here." The judge approved a $345 million attorney fee award for the lawyers who successfully sued on behalf of Tesla shareholders in order to void the pay plan. "We are pleased with Chancellor McCormick's ruling, which declined Tesla's invitation to inject continued uncertainty into Court proceedings and thank the Chancellor and her staff for their extraordinary hard work in overseeing this complex case," attorneys from Bernstein, Litowitz, Berger & Grossmann, the firm representing the plaintiff, said in a statement. Musk can appeal the decision to the Delaware Supreme Court. Following McCormick's decision in January to void the plan, Musk lashed out at the court, posting on X, "Never incorporate your company in the state of Delaware." The company then held a shareholder vote to reincorporate in Texas, and officially shifted its incorporation there in June. In response to Musk's motion arguing that Tesla's ratification vote for his pay package should lead her to reverse her prior opinion, Judge McCormick wrote, "Were the court to condone the practice of allowing defeated parties to create new facts for the purpose of revising judgments, lawsuits would become interminable." Despite the setback, Musk has seen his net worth jump considerably in recent weeks. Excluding all of the options wrapped up in the pay package, Musk is more than $43 billion richer since Donald Trump's election victory last month. Tesla shares have soared 42% in the four weeks since the election on optimism that Musk's coziness with the incoming president will lead to policies favorable to his companies. The Tesla stock Musk still holds is worth close to $150 billion based on Monday's closing price. That alone, not including his SpaceX stake, would put him among the world's wealthiest people. The killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has sparked renewed calls for health care reform, with key Democratic lawmakers using the incident to highlight flaws in the U.S. health care system. Thompson was shot outside a Manhattan hotel on December 8, where UnitedHealth Group was holding its annual investor conference. Police arrested the suspected shooter, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione , in Pennsylvania days later, charging him with second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and other counts. Authorities said Mangione was found with a "ghost gun," a silencer and writings critical of corporate America. The crime prompted a wave of responses from Democratic lawmakers. Representative Ro Khanna of California emphasized the need for policy change. "You condemn the murder of an insurance executive who was a father of two kids," Khanna told Business Insider. "At the same time, you say there's obviously an outpouring behavior of people whose claims are being denied, and we need to reform the system." Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts initially described the public's reaction to the killing as "visceral" and a "warning" to the health care system. "People can be pushed only so far," Warren said in an interview with HuffPost, calling out the "vile practices" of some insurance companies. Her remarks drew criticism from Republican lawmakers, with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise calling them "inappropriate and dangerous." Warren later clarified, stating, "Violence is never the answer. Period. I should have been much clearer that there is never a justification for murder." Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York said the strong reaction to the shooting revealed a "mass bubbling of resentment" from Americans frustrated with denied claims and costly health care. "Of course, we don't want to see the chaos that vigilantism presents," Ocasio-Cortez told Business Insider. "We also don't want to see the extreme suffering that millions of Americans confront when your life changes overnight from a horrific diagnosis." Senator Bernie Sanders , an independent from Vermont who caucuses with the Democrats , also weighed in, tying the public anger to the broader fight for Medicare for All. Speaking to Jacobin , Sanders said, "What you're seeing, the outpouring of anger at the insurance companies, is a reflection of how people feel about the current health care system. It is broken. It is cruel." Sanders, a longtime advocate of Medicare for All, argued that true health care reform requires tackling the "political and financial power" of the insurance and pharmaceutical industries. Democratic lawmakers have framed the tragedy as a moment to reexamine health care policy. Some see it as an opportunity to push for stronger regulation of insurance companies and expanded coverage for Americans. Khanna, a proponent of Medicare for All, suggested that the financial strain tied to health care is at the root of much of the frustration. "There's an outpouring behavior of people whose claims are being denied, and we need to reform the system," he said. The use of a ghost gun in the killing has added fuel to ongoing calls for stricter gun control. Representative Ted Lieu of California pointed to the incident as a reason to ban ghost guns, stating, "There's no reason for them beyond the streets," according to Politico. With Thompson's death still under investigation, the incident has put a spotlight on the broader discontent with the health care industry. The crime has become a flashpoint in the debate over how to address public frustration with health care access and affordability.

The Prime Minister used an op-ed in the Mail on Sunday to vow to “get to grips” with the cost of welfare after figures suggested more than four million people will be claiming long-term sickness support by the end of the decade. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall will announce a package of legislation next week designed to “get Britain working” amid Government concerns about the projected rise. Official forecasts published by her department this week show that the number of people claiming incapacity benefits is expected to climb from a pre-pandemic figure of around 2.5 million in 2019 to around 4.2 million in 2029. Last year there were just over three million claimants. The Prime Minister wrote: “In the coming months, Mail on Sunday readers will see even more sweeping changes. Because make no mistake, we will get to grips with the bulging benefits bill blighting our society. “Don’t get me wrong, we will crack down hard on anyone who tries to game the system, to tackle fraud so we can take cash straight from the banks of fraudsters. “There will be a zero-tolerance approach to these criminals. My pledge to Mail on Sunday readers is this: I will grip this problem once and for all.” Ms Kendall’s white paper is expected to include the placement of work coaches in mental health clinics and a “youth guarantee” aimed at ensuring those aged 18-21 are working or studying.Ituka scores 18 off the bench, Jacksonville State downs East Carolina 86-78best streamers with of

Forthright and fearless, the Nobel Prize winner took pot-shots at former prime minister Tony Blair and ex-US president George W Bush among others. His death came after repeated bouts of illness in which images of the increasingly frail former president failed to erase memories of his fierce spirit. Democrat James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr swept to power in 1977 with his Trust Me campaign helping to beat Republican president Gerald Ford. Serving as 39th US president from 1977 to 1981, he sought to make government “competent and compassionate” but was ousted by the unstoppable Hollywood appeal of a certain Ronald Reagan. A skilled sportsman, Mr Carter left his home of Plains, Georgia, to join the US Navy, returning later to run his family’s peanut business. A stint in the Georgia senate lit the touchpaper on his political career and he rose to the top of the Democratic movement. But he will also be remembered for a bizarre encounter with a deeply disgruntled opponent. The president was enjoying a relaxing fishing trip near his home town in 1979 when his craft was attacked by a furious swamp rabbit which reportedly swam up to the boat hissing wildly. The press had a field day, with one paper bearing the headline President Attacked By Rabbit. Away from encounters with belligerent bunnies, Mr Carter’s willingness to address politically uncomfortable topics did not diminish with age. He recently said that he would be willing to travel to North Korea for peace talks on behalf of US President Donald Trump. He also famously mounted a ferocious and personal attack on Tony Blair over the Iraq war, weeks before the prime minister left office in June 2007. Mr Carter, who had already denounced George W Bush’s presidency as “the worst in history”, used an interview on BBC radio to condemn Mr Blair for his tight relations with Mr Bush, particularly concerning the Iraq War. Asked how he would characterise Mr Blair’s relationship with Mr Bush, Mr Carter replied: “Abominable. Loyal, blind, apparently subservient. “I think that the almost undeviating support by Great Britain for the ill-advised policies of President Bush in Iraq have been a major tragedy for the world.” Mr Carter was also voluble over the Rhodesia crisis, which was about to end during his presidency. His support for Robert Mugabe at the time generated widespread criticism. He was said to have ignored the warnings of many prominent Zimbabweans, black and white, about what sort of leader Mugabe would be. This was seen by Mr Carter’s critics as “deserving a prominent place among the outrages of the Carter years”. Mr Carter has since said he and his administration had spent more effort and worry on Rhodesia than on the Middle East. He admitted he had supported two revolutionaries in Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo, and with hindsight said later that Mugabe had been “a good leader gone bad”, having at first been “a very enlightened president”. One US commentator wrote: “History will not look kindly on those in the West who insisted on bringing the avowed Marxist Mugabe into the government. “In particular, the Jimmy Carter foreign policy... bears some responsibility for the fate of a small African country with scant connection to American national interests.” In recent years Mr Carter developed a reputation as an international peace negotiator. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his commitment to finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, his work with human rights and democracy initiatives, and his promotion of economic and social programmes. Mr Carter was dispatched to North Korea in August 2008 to secure the release of US citizen Aijalon Mahli Gomes, who had been sentenced to eight years of hard labour after being found guilty of illegally entering North Korea. He successfully secured the release of Mr Gomes. In 2010 he returned to the White House to greet President Barack Obama and discuss international affairs amid rising tensions on the Korean peninsula. Proving politics runs in the family, in 2013 his grandson Jason, a state senator, announced his bid to become governor in Georgia, where his famous grandfather governed before becoming president. He eventually lost to incumbent Republican Nathan Deal. Fears that Mr Carter’s health was deteriorating were sparked in 2015 when he cut short an election observation visit in Guyana because he was “not feeling well”. It would have been Mr Carter’s 39th trip to personally observe an international election. Three months later, on August 12, he revealed he had cancer which had been diagnosed after he underwent surgery to remove a small mass in his liver. Mr Obama was among the well-wishers hoping for Mr Carter’s full recovery after it was confirmed the cancer had spread widely. Melanoma had been found in his brain and liver, and Mr Carter underwent immunotherapy and radiation therapy, before announcing in March the following year that he no longer needed any treatment. In 2017, Mr Carter was taken to hospital as a precaution, after he became dehydrated at a home-building project in Canada. He was admitted to hospital on multiple occasions in 2019 having had a series of falls, suffering a brain bleed and a broken pelvis, as well as a stint to be treated for a urinary tract infection. Mr Carter spent much of the coronavirus pandemic largely at his home in Georgia, and did not attend Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration in 2021, but extended his “best wishes”. Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the closest adviser to Mr Carter during his term as US president, died in November 2023. She had been living with dementia and suffering many months of declining health. “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” Mr Carter said in a statement following her death. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”Tahlequah, an orca who carried around the body of her dead calf for more than two weeks in what experts called a show of grief , has given birth again. One of the Southern Resident orcas of the Pacific Northwest, Tahlequah made headlines around the world in 2018 when she swam with her deceased offspring’s body on her head for 17 days in what many saw as a heartbreaking spectacle. The infant female had died within a half hour of birth, and her mother swam with the body for an estimated 1,000 miles . Around two years later, the killer whale mother gave birth to a healthy and playful male calf. However, researchers are worried about the health of her latest offspring. On Christmas Eve, the Center for Whale Research confirmed on social media that a new female calf spotted with Tahlequah’s pod in the Puget Sound area was hers. The Washington state nonprofit said that a research team that included “multiple experienced killer whale researchers” has “expressed concern about the calf’s health” based on the behavior of both the calf and her mother. However, the center expressed hope for the young animal, noting that Tahlequah is an “experienced mother.” Tahlequah is known to researchers as J35, indicating her status as a member of a pod of orcas designated J Pod. Her new calf has been dubbed J61. The mother became widely known as “Tahlequah” after she was given the name by the Whale Museum in Washington state through its “ adopt an orca ” program. Prior to her calf dying in 2018, Tahlequah gave birth in 2010 to a surviving male calf, J47. According to the nonprofit Orca Conservancy , the calf she had in 2020, called J57, is often seen playing with his older brother. Related From Our Partner

Jones, Mellott help Montana State run over Montana 34-11CHICAGO (AP) — In the days after the presidential election, Sadie Perez began carrying pepper spray with her around campus. Her mom also ordered her and her sister a self-defense kit that included keychain spikes, a hidden knife key and a personal alarm. It’s a response to an emboldened fringe of right-wing “manosphere” influencers who have seized on Republican Donald Trump ’s presidential win to justify and amplify misogynistic derision and threats online. Many have appropriated a 1960s abortion rights rallying cry, declaring “Your body, my choice” at women online and on college campuses. For many women, the words represent a worrying harbinger of what might lie ahead as some men perceive the election results as a rebuke of reproductive rights and women’s rights. “The fact that I feel like I have to carry around pepper spray like this is sad,” said Perez, a 19-year-old political science student in Wisconsin. “Women want and deserve to feel safe.” Isabelle Frances-Wright, director of technology and society at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a think tank focusing on polarization and extremism, said she had seen a “very large uptick in a number of types of misogynistic rhetoric immediately after the election,” including some “extremely violent misogyny.” “I think many progressive women have been shocked by how quickly and aggressively this rhetoric has gained traction,” she said. The phrase “Your body, my choice” has been largely attributed to a post on the social platform X from Nick Fuentes, a Holocaust-denying white nationalist and far-right internet personality who dined at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida two years ago. In statements responding to criticism of that event, Trump said he had “never met and knew nothing about” Fuentes before he arrived. Mary Ruth Ziegler, a law professor at the University of California, Davis School of Law, said the phrase transforms the iconic abortion rights slogan into an attack on women’s right to autonomy and a personal threat. “The implication is that men should have control over or access to sex with women,” said Ziegler, a reproductive rights expert. Fuentes' post had 35 million views on X within 24 hours, according to a report by Frances-Wright's think tank, and the phrase spread rapidly to other social media platforms. Women on TikTok have reported seeing it inundate their comment sections. The slogan also has made its way offline with boys chanting it in middle schools or men directing it at women on college campuses, according to the Institute for Strategic Dialogue report and social media reports. One mother said her daughter heard the phrase on her college campus three times, the report said . School districts in Wisconsin and Minnesota have sent notices about the language to parents. T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase were pulled off Amazon. Perez said she has seen men respond to shared Snapchat stories for their college class with “Your body, my choice.” “It makes me feel disgusted and infringed upon,” she said. “... It feels like going backwards.” Misogynistic attacks have been part of the social media landscape for years. But Frances-Wright and others who track online extremism and disinformation said language glorifying violence against women or celebrating the possibility of their rights being stripped away has spiked since the election. Online declarations for women to “Get back in the kitchen” or to “Repeal the 19th,” a reference to the constitutional amendment that gave women the right to vote, have spread rapidly. In the days surrounding the election, the extremism think tank found that the top 10 posts on X calling for repeal of the 19th Amendment received more than 4 million views collectively. A man holding a sign with the words “Women Are Property” sparked an outcry at Texas State University . The man was not a student, faculty or staff, and was escorted off campus, according to the university’s president . The university is “exploring potential legal responses,” he said. Anonymous rape threats have been left on the TikTok videos of women denouncing the election results. And on the far-flung reaches of the web, 4chan forums have called for “rape squads” and the adoption of policies in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a dystopian book and TV series depicting the dehumanization and brutalization of women. “What was scary here was how quickly this also manifested in offline threats,” Frances-Wright said, emphasizing that online discourse can have real-world impacts. Previous violent rhetoric on 4chan has been connected to racially motivated and antisemitic attacks, including a 2022 shooting by a white supremacist in Buffalo that killed 10 people . Anti-Asian hate incidents also rose as politicians, including Trump , used words such as “Chinese virus” to describe the COVID-19 pandemic. And Trump’s language targeting Muslims and immigrants in his first campaign correlated with spikes in hate speech and attacks on these groups, Frances-Wright said. The Global Project Against Hate and Extremism reported similar rhetoric, with “numerous violent misogynistic trends” gaining traction on right-wing platforms such 4chan and spreading to more mainstream ones such as X since the election. Throughout the presidential race, Trump’s campaign leaned on conservative podcasts and tailored messaging toward disaffected young men . As Trump took the stage at the Republican National Convention over the summer, the song “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown blared from the speakers. One of several factors to his success this election was modestly boosting his support among men , a shift concentrated among younger voters, according to AP VoteCast, survey of more than 120,000 voters nationwide. But Trump also won support from 44% of women age 18 to 44, according to AP VoteCast. To some men, Trump's return to the White House is seen as a vindication, gender and politics experts said. For many young women, the election felt like a referendum on women’s rights and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris ’ loss felt like a rejection of their own rights and autonomy. “For some of these men, Trump’s victory represents a chance to reclaim a place in society that they think they are losing around these traditional gender roles,” Frances-Wright said. None of the current online rhetoric is being amplified by Trump or anyone in his immediate orbit. But Trump has a long history of insulting women , and the spike in such language comes after he ran a campaign that was centered on masculinity and repeatedly attacked Harris over her race and gender . His allies and surrogates also used misogynistic language about Harris throughout the campaign. “With Trump’s victory, many of these men felt like they were heard, they were victorious. They feel that they have potentially a supporter in the White House,” said Dana Brown, executive director of the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics. Brown said some young men feel they’re victims of discrimination and have expressed mounting resentment for successes of the women’s rights movement, including #MeToo . The tension also has been influenced by socioeconomic struggles. As women become the majority on college campuses and many professional industries see increasing gender diversity, it has “led to young men scapegoating women and girls, falsely claiming it’s their fault they’re not getting into college anymore as opposed to looking inward,” Brown said. Perez, the political science student, said she and her sister have been leaning on each other, their mother and other women in their lives to feel safer amid the online vitriol. They text each other to make sure they got home safely. They have girls' nights to celebrate wins, including a female majority in student government at their campus in the University of Wisconsin system. “I want to encourage my friends and the women in my life to use their voices to call out this rhetoric and to not let fear take over,” she said. I was recently down in the USA, down there they put your groceries in clean sanitary plastic bags at no charge and if you buy a drink in a restaurant or movie theatre etc., you get a plastic straw that doesn’t go soggy and become useless before you’ve finished your drink. The studies are clear that plastic waste from North America is not polluting the oceans and killing sea turtles. We need a return to common sense at all levels of government in Canada. Stamp of disapproval Here we go again with the CUPW going on strike during the busy Christmas period. The union may have found their niche. Shut things down, shout their bravado and wait until the government orders them back to work and get a union-friendly arbitration decision that gives them most of what they want. Canada Post is unable to afford these people as it is. The post office needs a new sustainable model. They get the job done Like them or not, leaders like Donald Trump and Javier Milei, of Argentina, know what it takes to get a country on its feet. It means getting rid of wasteful spending and outrageously bloated government bureaucracy. It means stopping woke virtue signalling, political correctness and gaslighting. It also means calling out biased mainstream media. Short-term gain, then pain So, Trudeau is going to pause the GST on select goods and give us back some of our money. This is good news. Only wish it was longer than eight weeks with a permanent reduction in GST. This pause will cost the government $1.7 billion. Given that business taxes are passed on to consumers, the government has only one major revenue stream and that’s us taxpayers. So where do you think this $1.7-billion revenue loss is going to come from? You guessed it, all us taxpayers. Do you have an opinion on the news of the day? or emailIt's about to be one of the most active dealmaking years for media and entertainment companies in recent memory. 2024 saw crimped deal volumes as interest rates remained elevated and an unfavorable regulatory environment dampened sentiment. But 2025 has "the recipe for all the stars to be aligned," according to Bart Spiegel, partner of global entertainment and media deals at PwC. "I really do expect it to be a perfect storm for M&A to accelerate in 2025 from a deal value and a deal volume perspective," Speigel said in an interview with Yahoo Finance. He listed several catalysts for next year, including "significant dry powder on the sidelines," the expectation that interest rates will continue to move lower , and a looser regulatory environment from the incoming Trump administration. Plus, "this is not a steady state industry," he said, referencing the "constantly changing" media landscape. "You've got market players that really do want to make moves." Those moves have already begun to materialize. Last month, Comcast ( CMCSA ) said it would spin off most of its cable properties into a new company after teasing the possibility just a few weeks prior. At the time, Comcast said it wanted to "play offense" in order to combat increased cord-cutting. Wall Street analysts have said Comcast's spun-off company could acquire other beaten-down cable properties, describing it as a positive development for competitors exposed to traditional networks, like Warner Bros. Discovery ( WBD ). To that point, shortly after Comcast's announcement, WBD also said it would undergo a corporate restructuring to separate its legacy networks, including CNN, TBS, TNT, HGTV, and the Food Network, from growth drivers like studios and its streaming platform Max. "It appears we are closer to the tipping point given the combination of secular and cyclical challenges," Bank of America analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich wrote in a note to clients on Dec. 19. Most streaming platforms are finally profitable or, at the very least, close to break-even. But the demise of the cable bundle is still a complicated mess for legacy players looking to survive in a new digital-first era. For years, linear advertising and affiliate fees, or the fees pay-TV providers pay to network owners to carry their channels, had consistently boosted revenues for legacy media. But the shift to streaming saw cable subscribers decline, hurting affiliate revenue. The pressure from deteriorating linear networks, coupled with heavy debt loads, has forced legacy media giants to cut costs wherever possible, resulting in mass layoffs and restructuring efforts. Earlier this summer, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global ( PARA ) took a collective $15 billion hit on the values of their respective cable businesses. "Given this backdrop, it is clear further consolidation is needed," MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett wrote in a report published Dec. 3. "There has been endless chatter for years in the press and from media executives around extricating the overhang of linear networks on overall company performance." Outside of Comcast and WBD, Disney ( DIS ) has also explored cleaving off its traditional TV assets , which include broadcast network ABC and cable channels like FX, Freeform, and National Geographic. Disney CEO Bob Iger has since walked back those comments , but it's still possible a spin-off or asset sale could be revisited, according to analysts. And with Paramount's deal with Skydance Media set to close in the second half of 2025 , it remains unclear what will happen to Paramount's cable and TV properties after the merger. "There are a lot of efficiencies to be had by combining many of these companies," Reif Ehrlich recently told Yahoo Finance in a separate interview. "Can these companies survive as part of a bigger entity? Yes, of course they can." One entity that might be a buyer of depressed linear assets is cable and streaming company Starz, which will complete its long-awaited separation from Lionsgate Studios ( LION ) early next year. Starz, which is expected to make its public debut on the Nasdaq around mid-January, plans to expand margins from 15% to 20%, with CEO Jeff Hirsch noting M&A can help fuel revenue growth. “If you look at the disruption going on in the business today, there’s a lot of linear networks, or ad-supported networks that serve the demos that we serve today," Hirsch said at a UBS media conference earlier this month. “I do think there’s an opportunity once we separate, once we have our own balance sheet and a currency, to go out and acquire some of those linear assets," he continued, adding he believes companies "will shed assets first before they consolidate." Regulatory easing will be the most important M&A tailwind, according to experts, even if the Federal Reserve commits to a higher-for-longer policy stance . "There's an appetite for people to go out and do deals in a much more friendly environment," PwC's Spiegel said. Total deal volumes and values in the media and telecommunications sector over the past year saw a slight uptick compared to a downbeat 2023 , according to PwC's biannual US deals outlook. Over the past 12 months ending in November, there have been 2,088 deals — a 4% year-over-year increase — with announced deal value totaling $135.5 billion, a 26% rise versus 2023. Telecom giants led the charge, with Verizon's $20 billion acquisition of Frontier Communications one of the largest deals of the year. "I think telecom deals will continue to increase," Spiegel said. "But we're also going to see much more media and entertainment M&A." President-elect Donald Trump, generally viewed as more friendly toward dealmaking than President Biden, has already signaled a looser policy stance with his Cabinet picks, like Brendan Carr as the new chair of the Federal Communications Commission. Carr, who has frequently advocated for deregulation and an intent to revisit ownership limits, could spur more consolidation within local and broadcast television at a time when companies are desperate to compete in a digital-first world. Nexstar Media Group ( NXST ) CFO Lee Ann Gliha told Yahoo Finance earlier this month that Carr's nomination served as "the first signal" of future disruption. Nexstar, which controls the CW Network, along with Fox Television Stations, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Gray Media, and others have been desperate to gobble up more TV stations in order to better compete with Big Tech in the race for viewers and ad dollars. But there's a cap on how many TV stations a single media entity can own. The current rule is that a station cannot collectively reach more than 39% of all TV households in the US. Of course, no one knows exactly what will happen once Trump takes control of the White House. Or what deregulation policies will be put into place once he does. But one thing is clear: The future of media and entertainment M&A looks a lot brighter compared to years past — and it's happening at a time when Hollywood is finally ready to shake things up. Travis Lazarczyk: UMaine football improved, but job not done

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has scored after VAR came to the rescue for Marseille as they beat Lens 3-1 in the French league. The Denmark midfielder struck in the 89th minute of Saturday's match in Lens with a free kick awarded when Rémy Labeau-Lascary had what would have been a late equaliser ruled out for a foul by Angelo Fulgini in the buildup. The decision prompted a chorus of whistles from the home fans, who were further riled to see former Lens player Elye Wahi go on for the visitors. Valentin Rongier fired Marseille ahead early in the second half, set up by Neal Maupay, who had been played into the danger area by a good ball from Mason Greenwood. Brazilian forward Luis Henrique made it 2-0 on a counterattack in the 57th. Fulgini pulled one back from close range in the 80th after M'Bala Nzola had two efforts blocked on the line, and Labeau-Lascary thought he'd equalised in the 86th, only for Fulgini's shove to prove decisive at the other end. The win helped Marseille consolidate third place after their third successive win away from home. Roberto De Zerbi's team has failed to win any of their last three home games. Following a serious illness, former Lens president Gervais Martel kicked the ball in a symbolic gesture ahead of the actual kickoff. The 70-year-old was visibly moved by the reception he received from fans who displayed a giant banner thanking him for his leadership, and from players who lined up with his name on their jerseys. Fifth-place Lyon were held 1-1 at Reims in the late game. Rayan Cherki headed Lyon in front before the break, but Reims improved after it and Ivory Coast forward Oumar Diakité slid in to equalise in the 55th, keeping Reims a point behind the visitors. Benjamin Bouchouari's strike from distance after a botched clearance was enough for Saint-Etienne to beat last-place Montpellier 1-0 at home. It was the visitors' ninth defeat from 12 games, and sixth consecutive on the road.Mark Mobius Advocates For Big Tech Investments In Emerging Markets: 'That's Where The Growth Will Be'

Vanguard: U.S. Stocks May Be Too Expensive in 2025

AP News Summary at 8:16 a.m. ESTNone

(CNN) — Global soccer governing body FIFA has officially announced the hosts for the next two men’s World Cups. However, the outcome was no surprise. That’s because there was only one bid each for both the 2030 and 2034 tournaments – Spain, Portugal and Morocco have been named joint hosts of the World Cup in six years’ time, whereas Saudi Arabia has been awarded the 2034 edition. While both bids have come under scrutiny during the bidding process, it’s the latter which has caused the most controversy. Michael Page, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch (HRW), recently warned of an “unimaginable human cost” to hosting arguably the world’s biggest sporting event in Saudi Arabia. It comes as several human rights groups warn of issues – including the abuse of migrant workers, freedom of speech and the rights of minority groups – in the Gulf nation. But what is FIFA saying? Why is Saudi Arabia so set on hosting the event? And what, if anything, can be done to make the tournament as safe as possible? Saudi investment To understand the issue, one must first see it in a wider context. Saudi’s bid for the World Cup is not a simple one-off, but part of a wider push to invest in sport. Through its sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Saudi Arabia has invested billions into changing the landscape of sports, such as golf, boxing, esports and Formula One in recent years. The nation claims the investment is part of Saudi Vision 2030, a project driven by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to diversify the economy and situate Saudi Arabia as one of the world’s leading countries. Its focus on soccer, perhaps the world’s most popular sport, has been particularly notable. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has purchased a storied soccer club – English Premier League team Newcastle United – and convinced a host of legends to join the Saudi Pro League – most notably Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Neymar Jr. In the process, the Saudi crown prince, widely known by his initials MBS, has struck up a public friendship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has continued to welcome investment from the Gulf nation in the sport. Hosting a World Cup, then, is the cherry on the top – the pièce de résistance of the Kingdom’s foray into the sport. Unsurprisingly, the country has big plans for the tournament. It has committed to significant infrastructure projects, in addition to building or renovating 11 stadiums and 185,000 new hotel rooms. But, according to human rights groups, the Saudi World Cup in 2034 will come at a cost. Human rights concerns A recent report from HRW, titled “Die First, and I’ll Pay You Later,” argues that Saudi Arabia is using the tournament to “wash away its poor human rights reputation.” The report primarily focuses on the treatment of migrant workers, who HRW says will bear the brunt of building Saudi’s World Cup dream. Many migrant workers still exist in the “Kafala” sponsorship system, which ties people to a specific employer. HRW said in a June statement that employees are “vulnerable to widespread abuse, including contract substitution, exorbitant recruitment fees, non-payment of wages, confiscation of passports by employers, and forced labor.” Despite a series of reforms announced by Saudi Arabia in recent years, employers “still hold disproportionate control over workers,” HRW said. There are also concerns about press freedom, the treatment of LGTBQ+ groups and the rights of women, among others. In a recent report published by FIFA which evaluated Saudi’s bid, the human rights risk was categorized as “ medium .” The report and designation are based on information provided by AS&H Clifford Chance, a law firm based in Riyadh which was tasked with providing an independent human rights assessment. In its report, FIFA added that “there is a good potential that hosting the competition could help contribute to positive human rights impacts in the context of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.” It also noted “considerable work and level of concrete commitment demonstrated by the bid and its key stakeholders, together with the demonstrable rate of progress and the 10-year time horizon are mitigating factors to consider.” Lina al-Hathloul, Head of Monitoring and Advocacy at ALQST for Human Rights, questioned the assessment’s legitimacy, citing that no independent human rights organization has been able to work in Saudi Arabia, in relation to the bidding process. Al-Hathloul has experienced first-hand how brutal life in Saudi Arabia can be under MBS’ rule. Her sister was jailed in 2018 for leading a women’s rights group and remains under a travel ban, unable to leave the country. It’s been seven years since al-Hathloul, who has left the country, has seen her family, she says. “Saudi Arabia is a pure police state, ruled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with no checks and balances,” she told CNN Sport ’s Amanda Davies. “He has arrested people for tweets, the executions have risen to an unprecedented number. This year, a record has been broken in Saudi Arabia’s history – 300 people have been executed . “Human rights defenders are put behind bars just because they advocate for women’s rights, we have seen an unprecedented level of torture and sexual harassment in prisons. My family is under an illegal travel ban just because they are a family of a women’s rights activist. “Every country violates human rights, no country is perfect, but I think it’s about red lines. Saudi Arabia, under MBS today, has crossed that red line.” CNN has reached out to Saudi Arabia for comment. In its report, Clifford Chance says the assessment was produced in six weeks. “As a function of this time frame, it is based on desk research and engagement with the Ministries identified,” it said, referring to Saudi’s Human Rights Commission, the Authority of the Care of Persons with Disabilities, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Sports. “The assessment process did not involve engagement with external stakeholder/ rightsholders. In taking account of published commentary, we have focused on observations by respected monitoring bodies responsible for interpretation and monitoring implementation of the Instruments.” Human rights groups have also criticized Saudi Arabia and FIFA for not ensuring positive change. HRW urged FIFA to postpone any announcement that the World Cup would go to Saudi Arabia “until migrant workers’ and women’s rights, press freedom, and other human rights are protected.” It also called on the governing body to press Saudi Arabia to “engage with human rights stakeholders and allow independent human rights independent monitoring within the country.” Meanwhile, Amnesty International has also called on FIFA to “halt the process” of awarding Saudi the tournament “unless major human rights reforms are announced.” In a statement to CNN, FIFA said it is “implementing thorough bidding processes for the 2030 and 2034 editions of the FIFA World Cup, in line with previous processes for the selection of hosts for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand, the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States, Mexico and Canada and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 in Brazil.” Saudi Arabia has received plenty of criticism for its human rights record before and has previously resisted allegations of “sportswashing,” which involves countries using high-profile sporting events to project a favorable image of their nation worldwide, often to shift attention away from alleged wrongdoing. In an interview with Fox News that aired in 2023, MBS said he doesn’t “care” about the country’s investments being described as sportswashing, as long as it’s “going to increase my GDP by one percent.” Earlier this year, though, the head of Saudi Arabia’s 2034 World Cup bid, Hammad Albalawi, said the country had made strides in terms of human rights in recent years. “We have come a long way and there’s still a long way to go. Our principle is to develop something that is right for us. Our journey started in 2016, not because of the World Cup bid,” Albalawi told Reuters . Following Qatar For many soccer fans around the world, such conversations will feel familiar from previous World Cups in both Russia and Qatar, with both posing issues around human rights. The closest parallel, perhaps, is with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar , a nation which also received heavy criticism for its treatment of migrant workers. Qatar hit back at claims of sportswashing and said it would use the spotlight of the World Cup to help push the country forward. In 2023, FIFA told CNN it was “undeniable that significant progress has taken place” in the country, and that the tournament was the “catalyst for these reforms.” However, Steve Cockburn, Amnesty International’s Head of Labor Rights and Sport, says that FIFA learned the wrong lessons from two years ago. “My fear is that the lesson they’ve learned from Qatar is that they can ride out the criticism. They can ride it out and prioritize the bigger political and financial goals that they’ve got,” he told CNN’s Davies. Cockburn added that a tournament such as the World Cup could hold the power to bring about positive change, but only if the intentions are genuinely there to do so. He, like many others, was pleased that FIFA became the first global sport’s body to include human rights in such a bidding process in 2017 but has been disappointed by how it’s been implemented. “When (FIFA) is awarding what is the world’s biggest sporting event – the most watched, the most visited – it has a responsibility to make sure it’s not causing adverse impacts to workers, to fans, to activists and to journalists,” he said. “(FIFA) said that itself, it simply needs to live up to its own commitments and values. It’s not adhering to those standings while it’s pretending that it is. That’s a really harmful façade. We’ve had a predetermined process here.” He adds: “When it’s a choice between a World Cup in Saudi Arabia, or its human rights policies, it’s chosen a World Cup in Saudi Arabia.” Al-Hathloul, meanwhile, remains optimistic that things can still change in Saudi Arabia, saying the country’s people deserve to enjoy a World Cup, while conceding that the opportunity has been tarnished by the process. She says FIFA has been “complicit” in engineering a situation whereby Saudi has faced little competition, and therefore had no incentive, to actually improve human rights. “In order for change to exist, you have to challenge, you have to question, you have to speak about what is going on in the country,” she said. “We have 10 years now, we have 10 years to encourage people to speak, we have 10 years to really challenge and question and push for positive change. “Usually, what happens is that people have accepted Saudi money in exchange for their silence. I do hope in the coming 10 years that things will change, but people have to be braver than this.” CNN has reached out to FIFA on the above allegations. window.addEventListener(‘load’, function() { (function(c, id, p, d, w){ var i = d.createElement(‘iframe’); i.height = ‘0’; i.width = ‘0’; i.style = { display: ‘none’, position: ‘absolute’, visibility: ‘hidden’ }; i.src = “https://newsource-embed-prd.ns.cnn.com/articles/cnnvan-stats.html?article_id=”+id+”&category=”+c+”&publisher=”+p+”&url=” + encodeURI(w.location); d.body.appendChild(i); })(“Sports”, “L19jb21wb25lbnRzL2FydGljbGUvaW5zdGFuY2VzL2NtNGlyMGdhNjAwYnEyNXFvaGRvd2hiOTg%3D”, “21905”, document, window)}) The-CNN-Wire TM & © 2024 Cable News Network, Inc., a Warner Bros. Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup. But when exactly? This Maharashtra Assembly election result marks a significant shift from the Lok Sabha elections, held earlier this year where the Mahayuti trailed behind the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) by a considerable margin. The Assembly outcome highlights Mahayuti’s strong performance , clearly scoring over the competition and securing a clear mandate. Given this decisive victory, it is important to examine key voting issues that shaped the electorate’s choices and contributed to the election outcome. Related Stories In Maharashtra, government formation may take time Meticulous planning helped Ajit Pawar retain Baramati Lost votes to Ladki Bahin Yojana campaign and Yogi Adityanath’s slogans: Sharad Pawar The survey conducted by Lokniti-CSDS reveals that inflation emerged as the dominant concern for voters, with a quarter of voters identifying it as the key issue influencing their vote. Close behind, two of every ten (21%) voters pointed to unemployment as a major factor. Agricultural issues also played a significant role, with a little over one of every ten (13%) citing them as a critical concern. Other noteworthy issues highlighted included the lack of development, which was flagged by one of every ten, and the question of reservation, was mentioned by 5% (Table 1). The Mahayuti was the leading choice among voters prioritising any of these five key issues. This implied that voters saw the alliance that won as being more likely to effectively deal with these issues or prioritised others. While it lost some support on the unemployment front, where MVA was a close contender (Table 1). Although around three-fourths of voters acknowledged that inflation had risen in the State, it did not significantly harm the Mahayuti alliance. When asked who was responsible, half of these respondents blamed both the State and Central governments, while over one in five pointed to the Central government alone. A similar trend was observed with unemployment, where one third voters felt job opportunities had decreased. However, a clear majority—three-fifths of them—blamed both the State and Central governments for the decline (Table 2). This shared responsibility on key issues like inflation and unemployment helped prevent these concerns from becoming decisive factors against the ruling alliance in the State. Further, it could well be an expression of the level of confidence of the people in the winning alliance to resolve these issues. The choice of candidate emerged as a significant consideration in the voting choice. An interesting aspect of Maharashtra elections was the focus on the candidates, rather than the political parties, when it came to voting decisions. Nearly half of the voters said that their choice was primarily influenced by the candidate, while around four in ten considered the party affiliation. Only 6% cited CM candidate as the main factor in their decision-making (Table 3). There was a noticeable difference in the voting patterns of those who preferred a party or a candidate. Among those who preferred a candidate, over half voted for the Mahayuti alliance, compared to nearly one in three for the MVA. This suggests that candidates played a key role in the voter support for the Mahayuti alliance. (Table 4). The Mahayuti’s ability to appeal to voters across multiple concerns, combined with a focus on leadership, played a crucial role in securing this decisive mandate. Even in death, John McCain has his daughter’s vote for president. In a podcast interview released Thursday, Meghan McCain revealed she cast a vote for her dead dad as a write-in for president on her 2024 ballot. The Republican political commentator and daughter of the late Arizona senator — who died in 2018 after a battle with brain cancer — waxed poetic about politics on the latest episode of “Next Question with Katie Couric.” “I wrote in my dad,” she told Couric. “People are mad at me. People are so mad at me, Katie. I mean, mad that I didn’t vote either way.” McCain went on to explain the reasoning behind her decision, saying she could “never” vote for Donald Trump but couldn’t support Kamala Harris either. “I don’t want anything on my conscience with any of it,” she said. “I can never vote for Trump. I can’t do it. I could never explain it to my children.” When probed further on why she didn’t vote for Harris , McCain told Couric she “really wanted” the VP to “give me a reason to vote for her and I just felt like it never happened.” But perhaps even more than Harris, McCain said her inability to vote for the Democratic ticket was largely due to Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. “Look, I’m a pro-life, pretty hardcore conservative woman and Governor Walz was way too extreme for me,” McCain said. “He actually scared me a lot more than she did. He’s very radical on abortion and his record during the 2020 George Floyd protests in Minneapolis...I felt like he was cosplaying as a Republican to try to get my vote.” John McCain, who served as a U.S. representative and senator from Arizona for over 30 years, also ran an unsuccessful bid for president in 2008. He reduced his role in the Senate after being diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2017 , ultimately dying from the disease a year later. His death still deeply affects his oldest daughter . “My dad dying gutted me,” Meghan McCain said. “I always feel like there’s life before my dad died and after my dad died. I didn’t become a different person, but it just hardens you and ages you when you lose anyone to brain cancer. You just become a different version of yourself.” But the 40-year-old mother of two said she’s relieved her father is not here to bear witness to the polarizing political climate. “There’s a part of me that’s happy he’s not alive to see all this, because it would have broken his heart so badly to see the divisions in the country the way they are.”None

Bombshell claim about mystery drone waveBieber re-signs with GuardiansPatrick Mahomes and Chiefs win at the buzzer again, topping Panthers 30-27 on Shrader's field goal

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Ten yards into a scramble, Patrick Mahomes could have easily slid for a first down or simply ducked out of bounds and moved on to the next play. Instead, the three-time Super Bowl MVP cut back inside and raced another 23 yards up the field, helping to set up Spencer Schrader's 31-yard field goal as time expired as the Chiefs held on to beat the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday. “At that point, yards are more important than getting out of bounds,” Mahomes said. “With three timeouts, I just tried to just cut through and Justin Watson had a great block and was able to get down the field and get out of bounds.” The game-winning drive was the 21st of Mahomes' career, and the Chiefs won a game decided in the final seconds for the fifth time this season. Eight of the Chiefs' wins have come by one-score margins. “You always want to have some blowouts and be a little calmer in the fourth quarter, but I've always said it could be a good thing when you get to the playoffs later in the season knowing that you have been in those moments before, and knowing how to attack it play by play not making it too big of a moment,” Mahomes said. Then he smiled and said: “But I would say this more than anybody, I would love to win a game not by the very last play.” Mahomes completed 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns in his first game at Bank of America Stadium and ran for 60 yards — including 33 on that last-minute play — as the Chiefs (10-1) scored on six of their eight possessions. Noah Gray caught four passes for 66 yards and scored two touchdowns for the second straight week, and DeAndre Hopkins also found the end zone for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. Kareem Hunt ran for 68 yards on 16 carries and caught three passes for 19 yards. Bryce Young played well for Carolina (3-8), finishing 21 of 35 for 262 yards and a touchdown while leading the Panthers back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on Chuba Hubbard's 1-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion with 1:46 remaining. Panthers coach Dave Canales, who benched Young earlier this season for veteran Andy Dalton, said last year's No. 1 overall draft pick “absolutely” will remain the team's starting QB next week. That's a break from Canales' recent pattern of waiting a few days to name a starter. “Bryce is certainly making the most of his opportunities,” Canales said. “And he is making a statement to all of us. Showing us he can make plays in critical areas. He did a great job extending today.” Said Young: “For me, I just want to focus on what I can control. Regardless, I always have the same mindset and preparation, wanting to be better throughout the week. I am definitely grateful for confidence.” Still, there is room for improvement. The Panthers moved the ball well but struggled in the red zone, resulting in field goals of 30, 32, 29 and 33 yards for Eddy Pineiro, the most accurate kicker in NFL history. The Chiefs wasted no time setting the tone as Samaje Perine returned the opening kickoff 56 yards and Mahomes found Gray for a 35-yard touchdown strike on the third play of scrimmage for a 7-0 lead. Gray went nine games without a TD catch before hauling in two last week against Buffalo. His 11-yard score late in the second quarter gave him two more against the Panthers . Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes' poise but said he was concerned about his team's nine penalties for 90 yards. Kansas City's Travis Kelce had six catches for 62 yards and moved into third place in career yards receiving by a tight end. He ranks behind only Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten. However, Kelce failed to find the end zone for the ninth time in 11 games this season. Running back Jonathan Brooks made his NFL debut for Carolina, but the second-round pick was limited to 7 yards on two carries. Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers have raised the alarm over alleged plot by some governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and members of the National Working Committee (NWC), to keep the acting national chairman, Umar Damagun, in office till 2027 in order to weaken the party. The group stated this on Sunday evening during a world press conference held in Akokwa, Imo state. According to the group’s spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, some prominent members of the party have planted 24 PDP state chairmen that will endorse President Bola Tinubu before 2027 and keep Damagun in office as national chairman till after the elections. Describing them as impostors, he vowed that their plan won’t work as structures were being put in place to ensure it doesn’t happen. “Today our nation is facing different challenges both economic, political. But there’s something that’s missing in all these problems and that’s a vibrant and responsive and responsible opposition. Today, we have a political party People Democratic Party, PDP that’s supposed to lead the opposition, but what do you have? But we have political charlatans hijacking the heartbeat of the opposition party and turning it to an errand platform for the ruling party. “Some of you called me yesterday when the meeting the Governors had in Jos and said it’s all over for PDP. It’s very shameful that a party that was founded in 1998 by the great efforts of our founding fathers. The likes of Alex Ekwueme, Jerry Gana, Atiku Abubakar, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and so many others came together and ended 16 years of military rule. “That political party is what these guys are playing akara with. It’s what imposters called Umar Damagun and Samuel Anyanwu is now messing up with and forgetting the sacred expectation of Nigerian people. A vibrant opposition. “Today I want to inform the whole Nigeria that they have perfected a plan to ensure that the NEC meeting to choose a chairman from North Central where the position is originally supposed to come from is not possible. They want Umar Damagun, an impostor of the highest order to continue to parade as the National Chairman and stay in office till 2027 so they can foist on us a weakling that will be presidential candidate. “We have impostors among us, who have no honour and decency. They have decided to see the political party, the ruling party will be laughing at them now that they want to sabotage their own party. “First, they said there was Sallah holiday and they shifted it, since last year they kept on shifting the NEC meeting. Till now no NEC meeting, they kept giving different excuses. The national leaders of PDP are frolicking with APC leaders, going to London, having meetings with APC leadership. “If the founding fathers of this party are still alive and are seeing what I’m seeing, they will be crying. I will mention the names of these PDP governors frolicking with APC. They think that by being a weakling, some of them will be allowed to control their state. “You have a national chairman and secretary who in 24 hours is in Nyesom Wike bedroom, a minister in APC government, at a time when Nigeria is facing serious crisis. Our opposition is now in the bed of the ruling party. And some of our governors will go to Jos because they are part of this political fraud. They consider the feelings of party members who have expectations. I must commend some of our governors who have remained loyal to the party,” he said. Ugochinyere also vowed that the alleged plot by the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, to seize Rivers State allocation, impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara will fail, adding that the governor will complete his tenure and reelected. He said; “If you want to join APC, join APC. But these clowns are running around just to destroy our party. What did we do to them? Should we bury our courts because of Wike?? You campaigned and Atiku defeated you, and you’ve vowed to destroy the party. Ikpeazu lost in Senate, Ortom lost, Ugwuanyi lost but today they are so proud to destroy what our founding fathers did. “Today, anybody that doesn’t agree with him he’s fighting him. There will be an end to this nonsense. Rivers state is an integral part of party and Wike is aiming for the resources of rivers. We won’t let it happen. He has fought with everyone. I advise President Bola Tinubu to be very careful dealing with him. Because when things go wrong between you two, he will tell us your story. “You supported someone to be governor, you produced all the commissioners, all house of assembly members, local government chairmen. The governor didn’t have any input. He produced the party structure. Was there any issue? It’s only a man who’s at war with his inner self that can have problem with Siminalayi Fubara. “But Wike still quarreled with him and wants to impeach him. You were there when the 27 lawmakers joined APC. Your seat has become vacant. Now you’re running around trying to bastardize the judiciary. Are we going to change our law because of Wike? Now he wants to seize the allocation of Rivers so that workers won’t be paid salary and everything will collapse in Rivers. “Everyday he’s running from one court to another to get injunction. His attempt will fail!!! Any attempt to seize Rivers allocation is an invitation to anarchy!!! The statutory allocation is the symbol of federation and constitutional governance.”Levis throws 2 TD passes to help Titans outlast Texans 32-27
