Insurgents reach gates of Syria’s capital, threatening to upend decades of Assad rule BEIRUT (AP) — A Syrian opposition war monitor and a pro-government media outlet say government forces have withdrawn from much of the central city of Homs. The pro-government Sham FM reported that government forces took positions outside Syria’s third-largest city, without elaborating. Rami Abdurrahman who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian troops and members of different security agencies have withdrawn from the city, adding that rebels have entered parts of it. Losing Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Syria’s embattled leader, Bashar Assad. An archbishop's knock formally restores Notre Dame to life as winds howl and heads of state look on PARIS (AP) — France’s iconic Notre Dame Cathedral has formally reopened its doors for the first time since a devastating fire nearly destroyed the 861-year-old landmark in 2019. The five-year restoration is widely seen as a boost for French President Emmanuel Macron, who championed the ambitious timeline, and brings a welcome respite from his domestic political woes. World leaders, dignitaries, and worshippers gathered on Saturday evening for the celebrations under the cathedral's soaring arches. The celebration was attended by 1,500 dignitaries, including President-elect Donald Trump, Britain’s Prince William, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. For Catholics, Notre Dame’s rector said the cathedral “carries the enveloping presence of the Virgin Mary, a maternal and embracing presence.′′ Trump is welcomed by Macron to Paris with presidential pomp and joined by Zelenskyy for their talks PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed Donald Trump to Paris with a full dose of presidential pomp. Trump isn't back in office but he's already pushing his agenda and negotiating with world leaders NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is making threats, traveling abroad, and negotiating with world leaders. He has more than a month-and-a-half to go before he’s sworn in for a second term. But the president-elect is already moving aggressively to not only fill his Cabinet and outline policy goals, but also to try to achieve his priorities. In recent days, Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, two of the country’s largest trading partners. That led to emergency calls and a visit. And he's warned of “ALL HELL TO PAY” if Hamas doesn't release the hostages still being held captive in Gaza. South Korea's president avoids an impeachment attempt over short-lived martial law SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s embattled President Yoon Suk Yeol has avoided an opposition-led attempt to impeach him over his short-lived imposition of martial law. Most of Yoon's ruling party lawmakers boycotted a parliamentary vote Saturday to deny a two-thirds majority needed to suspend his presidential powers. The scrapping of the motion is expected to intensify protests calling for Yoon’s ouster and deepen political chaos in South Korea. A survey suggests a majority of South Koreans support the president’s impeachment. Yoon’s martial law declaration drew criticism from his own ruling conservative People Power Party. But the party also apparently fears losing the presidency to liberals. Days after gunman killed UnitedHealthcare's CEO, police push to ID him and FBI offers reward NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly four days after the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, police still do not know the gunman’s name or whereabouts or have a motive for the killing. But they have made some progress in their investigation into Wednesday's killing of the leader of the largest U.S. health insurer, including that the gunman likely left New York City on a bus soon after fleeing the scene. The also found that the gunman left something behind: a backpack that was discovered in Central Park. Police are working with the FBI, which on Friday night announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. UnitedHealthcare CEO's shooting opens a door for many to vent frustrations over insurance The fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare's CEO has opened the door for many people to vent their frustrations and anger over the insurance industry. The feelings of exasperation, anger, resentment, and helplessness toward insurers aren’t new. But the shooting and the headlines around it have unleashed a new wave of patients sharing such sentiments and personal stories of interactions with insurance companies. Conversations at dinner tables, office water coolers, social gatherings and on social media have pivoted to the topic. Many say they hope the new amplified voices can bring about change for companies often accused of valuing profits over people. 2 Pearl Harbor survivors, ages 104 and 102, return to Hawaii to honor those killed in 1941 attack PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) — The bombing of Pearl Harbor 83 years ago launched the United States into World War II. Two survivors have returned to the Hawaii military base for a remembrance ceremony on the attack's anniversary. Both are over 100 years old. They joined active-duty troops, veterans and members of the public for an observance hosted by the Navy and the National Park Service. A third survivor was planning to join them but had to cancel due to health issues. The bombing killed more than 2,300 U.S. servicemen. The mayor said rescuers were no longer looking for survivors but for eventual bodies, but could not specify how many people might still be unaccounted for. Residents of the northeastern neighborhood of Mariahoeve in The Hague heard a huge bang and screams before dawn. Dutch authorities have deployed a specialized urban search and rescue team to find victims. How 'Mufasa' rose with Aaron Pierre and Blue Ivy's voices along with new Lin-Manuel Miranda music SAN DIEGO (AP) — When Aaron Pierre was cast as Mufasa, the weight of following in the late James Earl Jones’ legendary footsteps was enough to rattle any actor. But instead of letting the pressure roar too loudly, he harnessed his nerves to breathe fresh life into his young lion character. Pierre found parallels between himself and his character while filming his leading role in “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which opens in theaters Dec. 20. He took the reigns as the new voice of Mufasa after Jones played the iconic King Mufasa in both the 1994 and 2019 versions of Disney’s “The Lion King.” The prequel offers a fresh exploration into Mufasa’s origin story.
CARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy finished 26th in the 29-team Major League Soccer standings just one season ago, and their biggest supporters boycotted certain matches to protest a decade of poor performance. The most successful club in league history seemed light years away from its luminous prime. When the Galaxy raised the MLS Cup again Saturday amid confetti and fireworks, their spectacular transformation was complete. In only one year, a team that was profoundly lost had rediscovered its peerless championship pedigree. "We won this trophy, and it's finally back where it belongs," striker Dejan Joveljic said. Joseph Paintsil and Joveljic scored in the first half, and the Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league's biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS' most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing years, but everything changed after LA spent smartly in the offseason to build a high-scoring new lineup topped by Paintsil, Joveljic and Gabriel Pec. The Galaxy finished second in the Western Conference and streaked through the postseason with an MLS playoff-record 18 goals in five games to win another crown. "I'm just so proud of this group after the challenges that we (had) and the way they bounced back and competed as a group," Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. "We spent a lot of energy at the start, but I'm just so proud of these guys. They've cemented themselves as legends in this club." The Galaxy even won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offense impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the conference final. Puig watched this game in a suit, but the Catalan catalyst's teammates hadn't forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA's opening goal with a superb pass in the ninth minute, Paintsil held up Puig's jersey to their roaring fans during the celebration. "I was really waiting for this moment," said Paintsil, who scored his 14th goal of an impressive season. "I'm much more, 10 times faster than them, and Gaston saw the space. ... It was really a good thing. We did it for Riqui, and we did it for our family that came, and our supporters." Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home his 21st goal. Brugman was named the MLS Cup MVP after a commanding performance in midfield. The Uruguayan hadn't started a match for the Galaxy since Oct. 5 after an injury-slowed season, playing only as a postseason substitute before the final. "I dreamed of that yesterday, of something I could give to the team," Brugman said of his pass to Paintsil. "Today, it happened." Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable postseason charge ended one win shy of their first Cup championship. With the league's youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win the tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. "I love these guys," Schwarz said. "Some guys, they are crying. In the big picture, that's a start. Sometimes when you lose the final, it's tough, but you use this experience to create the next energy, the next intensity." Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons, but Nealis beat the 2022 MLS Cup MVP in the 28th minute when he volleyed from the penalty area. The second half was lively: Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose in the Galaxy's penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn't finish. After Galaxy owner Phil Anschutz received the MLS Cup that bears his name because of his steady financial support of the league during its shaky years, Galaxy captain Maya Yoshida carried the trophy to his teammates for the celebration. The Galaxy extended their lead over DC United (4) for the most MLS Cup championships in league history. The Red Bulls remain one of three original MLS franchises never to win the title, along with FC Dallas and the New England Revolution. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club's breakthrough. But this season was about the Galaxy's rebirth. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier "Chicharito" Hernández swiftly turned itself into a contender again by acquiring young talents without international fame. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and grabbed Paintsil, a Ghanaian playing in Belgium. The duo combined with Joveljic to form a potent attack with orchestration from Puig, one of MLS' best players. "Losing a guy like Riqui after the performance he put in all season was devastating," McCarthy said. "Even if he wasn't on the field, we did it for him." Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Editorial cartoon: Dana Summers on political fightsEx-AAP convener Anjali Damania forms political partyLet me take you back to those halcyon days of December 1994, when footballers were still allowed to tackle, just, VAR wasn’t even a twinkle in an evil inventors eye, the offside rule was almost understandable and everyone knew what handball meant. East 17s Christmas Classic, Stay Another Day , was top of the charts in the UK, Dumb & Dumber had just been released in the cinemas, and a certain Eric Cantona was bestriding the Premier League like a colossus. It was also the last time Nottingham Forest won at Old Trafford, or least that was the case until a few hours ago when Manchester United’s fall hit another new low. So, let’s start with some painful home truths for the red half of the city, courtesy of owner Jim Ratcliffe. You know things are bad when a club’s owner is talking about making “difficult and unpopular” decisions, and describing their own team as mediocre. Even before his side’s 3-2 defeat at home to Forest, Jim Ratcliffe was telling fanzine United We Stand that the club “was not elite” and major change was needed to reverse that. Having only just arrived, manager Ruben Amorim can be fairly certain of his position, although whether the same can be said for goalkeeper Andre Onana and the rest of the United defence remains to be seen. Nikola Milenkovic, Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood did the damage for the visitors, with Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes scoring for the home side. Defeat left United 13th in the table, and their 19 points from 15 games is the team’s lowest tally at this stage of a season since 1986-87. Forest, in contrast, are up to fifth. Spotting a theme yet? We’ve gone from East 17 to Elvis, which would be a fun six degrees of separation to work out. Anyway, enough of the mournful musings of the king of rock 'n' roll, its time to focus on the suffering of the blue half of Manchester.Jewish community to come together after firebomb attack
Fighters opposed to President Assad's rule are gaining ground in Syria. Who are these rebels, and what do they want?[File Photo] The government has acknowledged that there is still much work to be done in improving basic infrastructure such as roads and water supply. These issues are now being addressed in the National Development Plan (NDP). Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad says that the NDP was designed to fill critical gaps, lay the groundwork for sustainable growth and ensure essential services meet the needs of the population. The plan also focuses on promoting inclusive development, empowering communities and promoting economic growth across all sectors. Professor Prasad says the government is projecting a four percent economic growth driven by its policies. He adds that to tackle the cost of living, a three-pronged approach has been introduced. Professor Prasad also states that, despite claims from the opposition, Fiji’s economic performance is on a positive growth trajectory. This includes increases in social welfare, subsidies, and adjustments to prices for sugar and other sectors to support vulnerable groups. The NDP is structured in three phases: three, five and twenty years. The three-year phase will focus on delivering essential infrastructure. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka states that the government is committed to achieving significant progress over the next two years. He expresses confidence that the policies and strategies in place will lead to sustained growth beyond the current term. The National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050 have been developed through consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, ensuring that the plans align with the needs and priorities of all sectors in society.
Skopje (North Macedonia), Dec 7 (AP) A political party in North Macedonia on Saturday demanded authorities ban social networks whose content incites violence and self-destructive behaviour after several young people were seriously injured in connection with the popular “Superman challenge” on TikTok. Health authorities said at least 17 students, ages 10 to 17, were brought to hospitals in the capital Skopje and other towns over the past week with broken bones, contusions and bruises. The children were injured after being thrown into the air by their friends to fly like superheroes and get applause on the internet. The Liberal-Democratic Party, which was part of the left-led coalition that ruled the country from 2016 to earlier in 2024, issued a press statement Saturday strongly condemning “the irresponsible spread of dangerous content on social media, such as the latest TikTok 'challenge' known as Superman, which has injured six children across (the country) in the past 24 hours”. “The lack of adequate control over the content of social media allows such games' to reach the most vulnerable users,” the party statement said. It demanded the “immediate introduction of measures to ban content that incites violence and self-destructive behaviour, increase surveillance, and sanction platforms that enable dangerous trends”. North Macedonia's education minister Vesna Janevska said students should focus on education, not TikTok challenges. “The ban on mobile phones in schools will not have an effect. Phones will be available to children in their homes, neighbourhoods and other environments,” she said. Psychologists have warned that the desire to be “in” with the trends on social networks, combined with excessive use of mobile phones, is the main reason for the rise in risky behaviours among children. They urged parents and schools to talk with students. (AP) PY PY (This story has not been edited by THE WEEK and is auto-generated from PTI)That’s exactly what Petr Yan did in his last fight at UFC Macau: Yan won by TKO and is gaining more and more votes among flyweight contenders. The Russian creature stood up; striking and grappling skills led to a unanimous decision victory, ultimately proving his strong stand in the bantamweight division. Petr Yan, who previously lost his bantamweight title to Aljamain Sterling due to a shoulder injury, now aims for the title defense and challenges Dvalishvili to bring fans the rematch. Petr Yan Shoots and Scores: Knocking Figueiredo out in the Decider Petr Yan fought with the former flyweight champion, his opponent Deiveson Figueiredo , in an entertaining match. Figueiredo fought the Russian fighter for five rounds and was badly outmatched by the fighter in a combination of stand-up and ground fighting techniques. Petr Yan was able to stay in control on the ground and suffocate Figueiredo with clean-up strikes, which was pretty diverse. At UFC 303 , Yan’s latest win was his second win in the year 2024 after defeating Song Yadong in the previous fight at UFC 299. There was no delay upon the victory roof to his head; Petr Yan immediately responded with his next plans. After the fight, he was very determined to get back to Merab Dvalishvili and take back his bantamweight belt. Petr Yan, however, brought the memory of the fans and critics to the fact that Figueiredo was heralded as the no. 1 contender in the division, and his victory was a step forward towards getting another shot at the title. Merab Dvalishvili Responds The current bantamweight champion, Merab Dvalishvili, appeared on social media to congratulate Petr Yan. Despite acknowledging the UFC Macau main event fight, Merab Dvalishvili suggested they could fight again by naming a match at UFC 313 in Las Vegas on March 8. The two fought for the last time in March 2023, when Merab Dvalishvili defeated Yan through a unanimous decision in UFC Las Vegas. That loss became a painful stretch for Petr Yan as he extended his string of losses to three and gave up his bantamweight title in a rather dubious disqualification decision against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 259. Since that period, which was difficult for Yan to carry on, he had a couple of wins in 2024. In overwhelming Figueiredo, Volkan’s fans did not just see his technical prowess, which is otherwise a marvel to behold, but also a statement about his standing in the bantamweight category. As for Dvalishvili, he has been on the rampage since his victory over Petr Yan. The Georgian standout knocked out Henry Cejudo at UFC 298 and became the bantamweight champion after a decision win over Sean O’Malley at UFC 306. Conclusion Petr Yan getting back in the bantamweight division has brought out the championship factor in him again, and with his win against Deiveson Figueiredo at the UFC in Macau, he is still a force to reckon with. This has effectively put the cat among the pigeons, with Merab Dvalishvili admitting that a rematch can be expected next year; a fight between these two top-class competitors could shape the division in 2024. It would be one of the possible fights of the year if fans are waiting for a rematch when Petr Yan wants to prove himself and Merab Dvalishvili wants to continue his dominance . The campaign, themed ‘Speak up against dangerous driving: Crashes kill more passengers than drivers,” underscores the need for collective responsibility to ensure safer roads, particularly during the busy festive season. The town hall event, which was held at Excellence Hotel, Aguda, Ogba, Lagos, served as a platform to address road safety challenges and educate road users, particularly commercial drivers, on the dangers of reckless driving and drunk driving. It brought together key transport stakeholders, including representatives from the FRSC, Lagos State Special Marshals, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), among others. In his keynote address, the Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria Plc, Girish Sharma, emphasised the campaign’s focus on empowering passengers to take an active role in promoting road safety by speaking up against dangerous driving behaviours. Sharma stated: “This year’s Ember Months Campaign’s theme, ‘Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers than Drivers,’ highlights the critical need for passengers to voice concerns when confronted with reckless driving. Silence is not an option when lives are at stake. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and everyone must play their part in creating safer travel conditions, especially during this season of increased road activity.” Reiterating Guinness Nigeria’s long-standing commitment to responsible drinking, Sharma urged road users to make conscious choices that would prioritise safety over indulgence. He added: “Drinking and driving do not mix. At Guinness Nigeria, we remain dedicated to fostering a culture of responsible drinking through various initiatives, including our Smashed Project, which has educated over 36,000 students across 80 schools on the dangers of underage drinking and reckless behaviour. Additionally, our DRINKIQ programme has engaged more than 400 participants in collaboration with government agencies, supported by 50 dedicated Guinness Nigeria volunteers. Our Digital Moderation Campaign has achieved 50 million impressions, sparking meaningful conversations on responsible behaviour with over 30,000 individuals. These initiatives underscore our commitment to promoting safe and responsible drinking practices.” The Guinness Nigeria MD concluded by thanking the FRSC, particularly the Lagos Sector Commander, for their leadership and commitment to road safety, highlighting the shared goal of building a culture of safety and urging all to remember: never drink and drive. FRSC Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde G. Hamzat, highlighted the alarming consequences of road crashes, which claim many lives and result in significant social and economic losses annually. Hamzat stated: “The ember months are characterised by heavy road traffic as Nigerians travel for family reunions, festivals, and ceremonies. Unfortunately, this period also sees increased congestion, reckless driving, and road crashes, leading to devastating loss of lives and properties. This campaign aims to address these challenges head-on by empowering road users to adopt safer practices and encouraging passengers to actively speak up against unsafe driving behaviours.” Assistant Corps Marshal Adeoye Irelewuyi, represented by Deputy Corps Commander, Emma Ero Fekoya, also highlighted the economic impact of road crashes, citing World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics that estimated over 1.3 million road traffic deaths annually worldwide. “In Nigeria, passenger vehicles are disproportionately involved in crashes, with passengers facing higher fatality rates than drivers. This underscores the need for greater awareness and individual responsibility to reduce these alarming statistics. Beyond the loss of lives, road crashes also impose severe socio-economic costs, including lost income, reduced productivity, and increased poverty. Collaborative efforts are essential to mitigate these impacts and foster safer road use,” Fekoya said. A key highlight of the event was a panel session. The session delved into the importance of responsible drinking, road safety education and collaboration in reducing road accidents during the festive season and beyond. Guinness Nigeria Plc and the FRSC remain steadfast in their efforts to advocate for responsible drinking and promote road safety. The 2024 Ember Months Campaign is a testament to their shared commitment to reducing road accidents and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians during one of the year’s busiest travel periods. Through this initiative, both organisations aim to drive meaningful change and foster a culture of safety on Nigerian roads.

Joining William and Kate on the annual morning stroll at Sandringham in Norfolk yesterday were their trio of cheeky children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte , nine, and six-year-old Prince Louis . They looked just the part, each sporting a piece of clothing in forest green tartan to match their immaculately dressed parents. But despite their smart and grownup looks - the three little ones could couldn't resist sharing a few playful moments during the walk. As well-wishers eagerly waited to greet the Waleses on their annual walk, some of the most eagle-eyed of supporters spotted Princess Charlotte sharing a tender moment with her eldest brother, Prince George in a clip captured on TikTok by @justinazuk . As they walked through crowds of well-wishers, each of the three children were offered handfuls of chocolates, teddy years and flowers. During one moment, piled high with presents from generous fans, Prince George turned around to grab the attention of his sister. Onlookers were delighted when the notoriously cheeky Prince Louis was spotted beaming as he accepted handfuls of Cadbury's chocolate and teddy bears from well-wishers. In a sweet video yesterday, a very happy Louis had his hands full of gifts before another fan offered him a Father Christmas headband. The young prince accepted the headband, politely thanked the person who gifted it and returned to his father and siblings. Prince William, who was himself greeting well-wishers with enthusiasm, appeared amused by his youngest son's haul and said: 'You've got that as well'. The royal children looked just the part, each sporting a piece of clothing in forest green tartan to match their immaculately dressed parents But when the family started to move along the path, Louis appeared to struggle to keep hold of everything he had received. At that point, he returned to his father and sweetly asked: 'Papa, can you carry some?' George, who will start secondary school next year, was twinning with his father, Prince William in a navy coat and matching trousers, while his younger sister wore a dark green coat that was almost identical to Kate's Alexander McQueen number. Kate, meanwhile, stole the show as the future Queen exchanged warm hugs with royal fans, who appeared joyous at her return to Sandringham following what has been a particularly turbulent year for the Royals. The Waleses looked picture perfect as they arrived at Sandringham on Christmas morning, with Charlotte holding on to her father's hand. Hymns included O Come All Ye Faithful, Oh Little Town of Bethlehem, While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. The service also included The Lord's Prayer. Appearing on the Lightweights Podcast with Joe Vulpis, Joey admitted that he and Kelsey had now decided to settle in Los Angeles , a departure from their original plans–and one that was potentially geared a little more towards him. “Wed’ been going back and forth for a bit, but we kind of knew when Dancing came around that we were going to get a real taste if we like L.A.,” he said. “I think that I was more interested in L.A. than New York and she was probably more interested in New York than L.A., but realized she would probably still be happy here, and I don’t know know that I would have been able to find the things I love to do as much in New York ,” he added. “When you’ve lived in Hawaii, the closest lifestyle that you can get in the U.S. might be in Los Angeles or somewhere in California , because it’s really hard to be able to play tennis, golf, and surf and do all of these activities that I love anywhere else,” he continued. “So we said why don’t we do this, because we wanted to be in a place where there was more going on.” Don't miss: DWTS fans swoon over Joey's 'best dance' as Bachelor star could make history [LATEST] DWTS viewers left in the dark as technical difficulties crash semifinals stream [UPDATE] DWTS fans rage over 'cruel move' during semifinals that will 'ruin' the finale [INSIGHT] It was a change from what the two said they were looking to do after Joey’s season ended. At the time, they had plans to temporarily live in Kelsey’s hometown of New Orleans, but then head to New York before the summer was over–and is something Kelsey expressed excitement over at the time. “I’ve always wanted to live there and Joey is supporting me in that,” she said at the time. “We’re young and I think now is the time to live in a tiny, cramped apartment together and experience it. Even if we hate it, at least we can say we did it.” Instead of New York , they wound up in Los Angeles though, where Dancing With the Stars films–and it appears the delay on their New York plans has now become a permanent one. What that means for the couple’s future remains to be seen.
